It depends on the martial art style, there are reverse grips and different unsheathing techniques in iaido and kobudo, depending on the situation: quick draws aren't done that way. Also the samurai would be carrying a wakizashi that rests on top of the katana, so unsheathing the katana like that would be impossoble due to the lack of space

the reason samurai drew their sword like that was because keeping the blade up prevented edge damage and it allowed them to unsheathe and attack in quick one motion

It depends on the user, and how they orient the saya. If they have the saya with the blade facing down, it's probably fine to draw either way

You have no Uwa-obi without it you use your hands to simply draw back the sheath but if it was tied to your waist you would have to widen your stance and rotate your hips away from katana for a quicker draw. You can draw a sword any way you please if it not strapped to your waist.
