"I'm called to serve." Simple statement but sum all that anyone that serve a church is called to. I've been serving worship since I was 14. Later on, I moved to serving on stages for large amount of people. I admit I thought if i wasn't on the stage. I wasn't serving worship. But one summer, I was getting ready to serve a large conference of 2000+. Then I was asked to serve Clean Up Crew. Honestly, I felt offended. But it was the most humbling experience in my life. Many were surprised that I wasn't serving worship. I realized it doesn't matter what role I serve. What matters is that I'm serving others and glorifying God.

Chris Did a workshop at my church last year, I haven't been the same since then. I am so focused now on making sure worship is both truthful and honest. It's meaningless If it doesn't reflect HIS Truth!

Our passions and talents are not our calling, even though we should be good stewarts of them. Christ never said, "now go lead worship". He said, "Go, and make disciples".

Is a talent not a gift? The word says the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable, meaning never will be withdrawn. As far as our passions, He put those in us when he created us, we are talking Godly passions here. He created you to love the things you love... no matter what it is.

@@twparker1 I think we're talking about two different things, but I'll address your questions the best that I can from my walk. "Is talent not a gift?" - Every good thing comes from above, and so yes, I believe that talent is a gift from God. However, there are different spiritual gifts that are given. Not getting too much into those gifts, I still see that gifts of the Spirit, or even the gifts that are mentioned in Romans 12 are not our calling. We are to use them in our calling, but they are not what we are called to do. I, personally, believe that some gifts He has given us. And, we possess those at all times (Romans 12). However, some spiritual gifts, like those mentioned in 1 Corinthians are given at appointed times by the coming upon of the Spirit for a specific purpose. Jesus wasn't a worship leader, but someone who came to love and serve others so that they be saved. After His baptism, He began to use signs and wonders in His ministry to show others who He was and the power of the Spirit from His Father. He told us to do the same, but it wasn't for the purpose of leading others in corporate worship. It was to show love and point people to the source of the power from which they were given. Was it a form of worship? Absolutely! But, so should our everyday walk, not just from a stage one or two days a week. I think the point of this video was that we are not "called" to get on a stage and sing songs. We are "called" to love, disciple, and serve. We can use that platform to do that, but there is SO much more to it than using our talents to play and sing some songs.

Wow such wisdom. Thank you God for this and also thank u guys in the video. I needed to hear this. This truly comes from God. Such great wisdom. Just to encourage y’all as your encouraging me. God is using this to mold me into the man he wants me to be. I’m only 17 but we are without a youth minister and so God is using me to lead worship but now he’s also starting to move me into a position to where I can help disciple the other youth and maybe even preach a sermon to them. Just saw the end of the video! Yes, we are called to be a Christian and in a relationship with Jesus before all things. Everything else is secondary. I believe that’s are ultimate purpose is to find our reason to live in Jesus and in him alone. God has recently shown me this. I no longer find my identity in music, in video games, in skating, or in anything else but rather I find my identity in being a child of God and finding my firm foundation, my identity in the solid rock, character and heart of Jesus Christ.

It certainly is; however, I wonder what it says about someone’s heart who won’t take the time or make the effort to learn to put the notes and rhythms in the right place. And I’m not talking about mistakes, which of course everyone makes. I’m just talking about basic musical competence.

Thank you for this video! I have been serving in worship bands playing guitar for about 8 years now. Over the past month I have been wrestling with the feeling that I will be called to lead worship and have been terrified by it as I do not feel comfortable singing publicly at all. I have felt that I haven't been doing enough by just sitting in the back playing guitar. It is such a relief to hear that what I am doing now is in fact enough. Thank you!

Devin Mains Hey, I used to be the same way as you. I’ve been playing guitar for 10 years in the church and was never comfortable singing in public, most of the time not even in front of my own wife. This past summer, our worship leader quit all of a sudden. Guess who had to start singing... I have always been a perfectionist and didn’t even like the sound of my own voice, always being very critical of myself. It took a while before I started believing the positive comments people said about my voice, but I finally accepted it with gratitude to God who made me who I am. Moral of the story is,”don’t count yourself out, brother, you never know who you will disciple or bless if you do decide to sing.” The Lord is our courage and strength and He will equip us to do His will, if it’s His will. I know I don’t know you, but I just wanted to share my story because you remind me of myself. God bless!

Devin, it’s really good to be at peace with the service you are offering God. Contentment is vitally important to a peaceful Christian life and service. I would ask you to consider, “Is it possible that I am not surrendering all of my heart, my gifts, my talent, my life, by giving to God - enough?” Truthfully I believe we can never give enough, but we can be at peace with what we give. Not sure that makes sense... but I believe God continually asks us to step out in faith, out of our comfort zone, into deeper faith (Oceans) where we must rely on Him to makeup for our weaknesses. Not saying you have to sing or lead, just saying this... release to God all that you are, dedicate your guitar, your voice, your finances, your family, your free time... all that you are... holding nothing back. Then, once you offer Him all... that is enough! God is more interested in our hearts and our character, than He is in our comfort. Blessings brother as you serve Him and grow as His servant leader.

To keep myself humble I have weeks where I don't sing at all just play lead guitar and don't lead worship I have a young Lady I'm training to eventually take over for me do it. I also sometimes just sit out a week I think it helps those feelings of I have to be up there.

I thought this was really good, and a great challenge to us who have the opportunity to lead worship. The only thing is I believe discipleship is a calling for everybody (Matthew 28:19) not a gifting, and exhorting is the gift of encouragement. This again was a great challenge that God looks at the heart!

Thanks for this video. I just left a ministry position that I’ve been in for most of my adult life. Was offered a full-time worship role in a town far away, but turned it down. Now I moved back to my hometown and it’s been difficult to find an opening right away. My home church wanted to hire me, but they don’t have the finances to do so. If something doesn’t change soon, I’ll have to work a “normal” job to pay the bills and that’s been eating at me as all I’ve really known and had a passion for is vocational ministry. Thanks for the reminder that I’m just called to serve regardless of where I am and where I land. Such a simple idea that we all know and preach of all the time, but one we often forget. Thanks again.

Worship is not music, but music can be an external manifestation of the worship that is taking place on the inside. Then there’s ministry. Ministry is not simply a job title within a religious organization . It’s not something you are, it’s something you do. You can be a pastor or worship leader and still not be ministering. Some churches even hire musicians that don’t know Jesus. 🤦🏻‍♂️ All who believe are called to be in ministry, and that takes place wherever we are no matter what our job title is. Ministry is The Great Commission.

Any position in a worship band, parking team, or whatever can be a worship leader. The general concept of a 'worship leader' is narrowed to usually one individual in an easily seen role.

I'm not sure I understand what is meant here by calling. Since there are many kinds displayed in the bible. We are "called" to obedience. That applies to all things, not just say - Beatitudes and fruit of the spirit, though those are important.

The title got my attention. I listened as long a I could... BORING!! Leading worship, or being part of a worship team, is a calling. It is a gift that God has given you. Use your gift for His purpose.

There are certainly men and women who lead others in worship through music that would be called "worship leaders". But I don't think that worship leading is a Scriptural office. And yes worship is an every day lifestyle, not just songs we sing on Sunday.

Worshiping in our daily lives is beautiful. I try to always have an attitude of worship, and thanks, during my day. But, the Lord wants us to get together as believers. As a group, to sing praises to him. If anyone is uncomfortable with that, then they won't like heaven... lol i'm sorta joking there, no one will not like heaven. And here on earth, the word says that he will inhabit our praise...meaning when when we praise him, he will be there. A worship leader is called. Sure there are those not called, doing the job, like some pastors. A worship leader is not a "performer", even though they do have to work on their skills, not for their own glory, but for the lord.

I think he would say that he figured God was 'calling' him to be a Shepherd. But he followed the leading of the Holy Spirit into something completely different.

@@worshiptutorials Do you not know, that David being a shepherd was God's plan? Do you not know what all that represents? Do you not know that the whole story of David, an that all the whole testament pointed to Christ before he even came to earth?

@@twparker1 Hi Tom - I (I'm Brian, by the way) was referring to 1 Samuel 16. David was a shepherd, and - at least according to human values - the least likely person to become King in his family. the Bible doesn't tell us, but I would guess David was pretty shocked when Samuel poured the oil over his head. David was raised to be a shepherd - that's probably what he thought his 'calling' in life was. But obviously God had a different plan for him. I also hope I have demonstrated to you by my comment above that I can read and understand scripture - although I shouldn't feel the need to defend myself. Of course I know that Jesus - who is called the 'Rod of Jesse' descended through the line of David. But do you honestly think when David was working as a shepherd he could have fathomed that the Messiah would be a direct descendent of him? Samuel himself barely even believed it. David was literally his last choice. That's all I was saying. And that's what Chris and I were discussing in this video. As believers, we are called to be obedient to God - just like David was. That obedience supersedes a job description. So while being obedient to God may mean a person is a worship leader on staff at a church, it may not always mean that. I'm not sure why you are so condescending and frankly mean in your responses. There's no need for it. Being a 'Christian KZfaqr', I constantly see Christians being terrible to each other. It needs to stop.

I’d say musicianship is more a skill than anything else. It’s something that most anyone can learn if they practice enough.

Hey Mike, thx for commenting! There are 4 places where spiritual gifts get discussed: Eph 4, Romans 12 & I Cor 12-13 ... the gifts listed - at least in the context of the gifts given by God to us to live out in our lives - do not include music. However, many many times music has been a true gift to me spiritually and has helped me through difficult times. So I see what you’re saying... but in the context we’re talking about, music isn’t that. Here’s a great list of the spiritual gifts listed: www.umc.org/what-we-believe/exploring-your-spiritual-gifts I’m not a Methodist, but this site gives a great list and the discussion of each gift.

In agreement with the other replies, music is not an NT gift. As to " the biblical list is not exclusive", I can't agree. By that logic, drawing or sculpture could be called a spiritual gift. It is a talent, not a spiritual gift.

Have to disagree with most of this video. Agree with being called to exhort, disciple, etc. But we are all ultimately called to worship, and God has called me to lead worship. You know in your spirit man. David had a calling to lead worship with music. So much so that when he played, demons and evil spirits left Saul. You can’t tell me worship leading is not a calling

Hey Bryant! Thanks for commenting. I agree with you that we are called to worship -- God is worthy of every praise we can muster! And boy am I glad that there is worship through music because I love music and I love that we can worship God through this thing I love dearly. However, I wonder if you can back it up Scripturally that David was CALLED by God to lead worship with music? I agree that God used music to drive the demons and evil spirits out through music... but God also used a Donkey to teach a lesson... I think we'd agree that donkeys are not called to teach. In other words, simply because we see something happen in Scripture doesn't mean we simply get to claim it as calling. Calling is a very distinct thing in Scripture. So it's very possible that I've missed it. Could you show me Scripturally where there is a calling specifically to lead worship through music?

Chris Sligh if we are all called and your spiritual gift is singing then can’t leadership can be classified as leading worship music? I gave my heart to Jesus from a song I heard on the radio, went home to KZfaq it and fell to my knees when I knew nothing about Jesus yet surrendered my life alone in my room. 8 years later I’m still walking with Jesus. If it wasn’t for worship music I wouldn’t be a Christian, and some might say yes you would because God would have revealed Himself in another way, but He didn’t. Was through a song on the radio. I like how humble you are about this approach. Maybe you just don’t understand how powerful music is and if you are being used to bring others to Christ through music, which you might even not know you are doing, then Gods will be done. We are called to Love God and Love others by sharing the good news of Jesus. What better way than music? It’s a universal language. Unless I’m missing the point entirely my spirit is just very sensitive to worship music since it changed my life almost 10 years ago in the twinkling of an eye. The points you made about how we can feel we aren’t doing God’s work if we aren’t singing is true though. I’ve spoken to our worship leaders who feel that way and you’re right, that’s probably wrong. But man if you can sing well and you write real scriptural music then God is so good! We will be singing for eternity. You appear very humble. Thank you for sharing this.

It is absolutely unreal. Most vocalists would be so fatigued by the end, that they would give up. But that last note sounds as strong as his first note, probably even better. That takes thousands.... THOUSANDS of hours of practice. It's not just tone. It's stamina as well.

To understand what an actual Biblical Christian is, you must look to see what a disciple is. Then, and only then, you can know what a Christian looks like per the Bible.

When i first went to my church....the worship leader had neither good vocal skill nor good guitar playing....now time has changed and we have very good lead singer and musicians but its not the same ...the touch of holy spirit is something missing i guess now...from what i saw you dont need to be skillful in earthly talents to impress god ...just be full in spirit

If i may ask.. Why keep on saying "my church" refferring to a body where you belong? Is int Jesus Church? His body? we are HIs body.. one head and that is the Lord Jesus Christ.

I would wholeheartedly disagree. You can be "called" to many things - you might feel called to be a teacher, a writer, a banker... all doing what God has designed you to do and be. Personally, I can tell you the time and literally the exact spot where I was standing when God spoke to me so certainly it was almost an audible voice, that I was called to be a worship leader. When I followed that calling my life completely and abruptly blossomed in such amazing ways only God could have directed it. I think there are many worship leaders who have not been called - they'd rather be celebrities but are "stuck" working in a church - and find themselves frustrated. I'd also like to point out there's a whole book in the Bible about worship (specifically referencing... music) and there's also the Levitical tribe that were tasked with leading worship in the Old Testament, so I'd think twice before denouncing a calling as a worship leader.

Don Chapman It makes a huge difference when somebody is called by God to serve in a ministry! During a church worship time a pastor came to the front and started blessing and annointing me and said I was called to be a worship leader. I was a worship singer then standing next to the worship leader and I was shocked and thought that cannot be possible that he does such a thing in front of the band and the congregation . About 3 years later I was leading worship, then 23 years old, playing the guitar which I never thought to play on stage. Now I am 50 and am still passionate in my calling as a worship leader. It’s to the glory of God that I serve Him and his people ! 🙌

What's troubling is that all these famous artist say they are concerned about souls, yet none will sing in nursing homes! That's cuz they want only big events to perform at! Names in big lights all the time! They have excuses not to play nursing homes, I'm calling them all out on it!

There is awesome talent, a gift from God, who don't become famous. people who will go to nursing homes, or wherever. I like the words from the song "I don't need my name in lights, I'm famous in my Father's eyes"

I'm sorry Chris Sligh, with all love in Christ, you have no idea what you're talking about. Worship is a ministry and it's one of the most important ones. When we're in heaven, there will be no need for all the other ministries. There will be no more discipleship, no more evangelizing but there will be worship. Worship will last for the rest of eternity.

Well I apologize if I’ve been mean or harsh on responses. Often here on KZfaq, I’m accused of being something I’m not, or saying something i didn’t. Sometimes people are just terrible to me or each other in comments. I usually ignore those kinds of comments, but when I choose to engage I can get pretty passionate and say things I regret.

We do not need "worship leaders" in fact nobody needs a band or a Sunday morning rock concert entertainment show. We have drifted from God with this.

amen. I go to a church where they have a band and i’ve feel drifted from God. During singing, I try hard to feel God and now I realize worshiping isn’t about feelings. Everyone seems to be connected with him while they sing to the band and i’m not. So i’m letting God help me if that church is for me or not.

Men who cant carry a tune or play a guitar but love to "perform" think they are church rock stars and it's just panful to listen to them. They are like bad American Idol "failed auditions" who can inflict their lack of talent and inability to sing or play an instrument every Sunday and no-one tells them they cant sing and listening to them is just irritating noise.

In this video Chris shared that we’re called to live out the fruits of the spirit and the beatitudes. Our spiritual giftings (which may include teaching) are also what we are called to. What we do vocationally doesn’t matter nearly as much.

I like to reference multiple versions, but I’d say my favorites are: NIV, NLT, ESV, and NKJV.

This Chris Sligh guy is a HORRIBLE listener. He cut you off and didn’t allowed you to finish what you were gonna say about the Jr & Sr high students you used to pastor. You could see from Chris’ body language that he only thinks about what he’s going to say next instead of actually listening to what you’re saying. He needs to take his pastor’s advice and not be such a “jerk.”

Steve your comment is extremely presumptuous... You know these videos are edited down right? There’s a ton of stuff in there that doesn’t even make it due to length. Maybe you should assume a little better of people or at least keep your comments positive.
