Stop using this old and traditional way to uninstall any app or program from your Windows machine as it only uninstalls the program and doesn't remove them from your device.

Whether or not all remnants of the program are removed depends on the install and uninstall routines of the particular software package. A software author can choose to remove all remnants such as registry entries and program directories such as C:\User\Username\Appdata\Roaming\Program_Name\*.*. This could also include auxiliary programs. Many software authors don't want to go to the trouble to do this, particularly for the registry entries. This is one reason I don't like using the registry for application programs. I prefer the traditional Unix/Linux method of putting all program related data in a separate directory and subdirectories for a particular program and using .ini files for information about any data the program may use. I have seen this method used for science and engineering software that runs on multiple systems. For Windows programs that use the registry and common directories such as C:\User\Username\Appdata for program information I have used uninstallers such as Iobit Uninstaller and Revo Uninstaller. I prefer Iobit Uninstaller Professional in spite of the tendency of Iobit to try to install other utilities at the same time.

@darrennew8211 19 күн бұрын
This is why MS's new (experimental) operating systems use manifest files that explain (and grant permissions to) for all the files and directories the program uses. Installing the program installs the (equivalent of) AppData directory for cached stuff, and it knows to take it out, and makes it accessible to only that program. The general design is to have not have any files on the system unassociated with a specific program except those in user directories like "Documents."

Uninstall failures are entirely due to sloppy programming by lazy software devs who are only too happy to spray their stuff all over the place (Program Files, ProgramData, %User%, %User%\Appdata etc) but can't be bothered to clear up when they're done. It's not difficult to write an uninstall routine to completely get rid of whatever you put there, particularly when you're the one who knows where it all went in the first place, it's just plain damn laziness. Quite honestly, it's like renting out space to a bad tenant who knocks down some walls, puts others up, repaints what's left in hideous colours, and leaves you to deal with the mess when you evict them. Those devs and their software companies should be named and shamed.

I remember a rule of thumb when uninstalling/deleting a program... Turn OFF System Restore. Shift + Delete on some applications... That was for XP and before... Vista to present now uses Carbon Shadow Copy... A sneaky DCIM (type) file now bypasses turning off system restore... So nothing actually gets deleted...

That is not a mistake. That is how softwares work in general. The un-installer will not un-install any files that it did not install. Configuration and manifest files created by the application are not un-installed by the un-installer so that some other application depending on those files does not misbehave and crash the system. 🤦‍♀🤦‍♀🤦‍♂🤦‍♂🤦🤦

@@CrownGEEK Which part of my comment says it is good? What I said is not some feel good thoughts that I pulled out of thin air. These are best practices that are followed by experienced developers and sysadmins all over the world. Organizations like Revo Group who develop cleaning/removing softwares like Revo understand these best practices and Software Development principles and methodologies extremely well, which is why they are able to develop a software that is capable of cleaning/removing the leftover remains of applications post UN-install, so well and without crashing the Operating system. Additionally, you have chosen a terrible example. Those two software products have their own independent application installer packages. It is possible that one installs the other and that they may need each other to work in unison(I am not sure about that yet), but they are two different packages as in one can be installed without the other, as shown in this links : www.mcafee.com/support/s/article/000002207?language=en_US www.mcafee.com/en-us/safe-browser/mcafee-webadvisor.html www.mcafee.com/support/s/article/000001539?language=en_US www.mcafee.com/en-in/antivirus/free.html

@@powerdude_dk While you are right about most situations, it is not always possible to delete these types of files. Let me elaborate with an example : If you create a volume of 100 TiB and format it with NTFS file system, the NTFS file system will create a metadata footprint of about 1.2 TiB, in it's completely blank state. As you add data(files/folders) in this 100TiB volume, the FileSystem metadata footprint will grow in size. Let's say after a year you realized that you do not need 100TiB volume, only 25 TiB is enough, you can shrink the NTFS file system to 25TiB and post that shrink the partition to 25TiB. However, the 1.2TiB + File System metadata will remain as it is. There will be additional File System Metadata generated to work with the new size of 25TiB. Now if you manage to delete that old 1.2 TiB + metadata, you will find that your file system is now corrupted after deleting it. This is because, even though the file system has been shrunk, the old metadata is still used to maintain the file system. Most temporary cache files are in the %Temp% directory in Windows, which after a re-boot deletes all it's contents.

After uninstall, the web advisor folder was there because that is a separate application. You uninstalled McAfee, so that folder is uninstalled. Saying a leftover file to be dangerous if not uninstalled by a third-party is exaggerated and wrong. Once you uninstall, the executable file gets uninstalled. So it can't run on its own. User can delete %temp% files manually if they want instead of using a separate 3rd party app.

McAfee is a bad example because it often have several separate uninstallers. You only uninstalled McAfee Total Protection, and didn't notice WebAdvisor was also in the list. McAfee WebAdvisor is still in the programs folder because you didn't uninstall that from the control panel. It has it's own uninstaller (look at the last item in the "Programs and Features" list or the "Installed Apps" list). Now, it's not wrong that many programs have leftovers after uninstalling, but it's mostly settings files, in case you'd install it again later. Some programs doew leave a lot of cache files though, so programs like Revo Uninstaller can still be helpful. But understand what they do.

So there you have the folder of mcafee and the mcafee listed in registry editor is also related to webadviser. @@CrownGEEK No you’re absolutely right. Revo removes things that regular installers don’t. I was just referring to the program files folder. even if you don’t use revo UnInstaller, the standard uninstall will at least get rid of the program files content haha
