Sweet Caribbean music from the 60's and 70's.
Singer Mavis John is the First lady of Caribbean Jazz and Soul. Mavis hails from the twin island of Trinidad & Tobago, but has Grenadian roots as well, and has been singing since the 70's. Her first big hit was this duet done with then husband Dave Elcock titled "You Are What Love Is". This song catapulted the duo into Caribbean Soul stardom.

I remember this song. I love all the songs by favorite teacher Mave. This is her first hit as a duo with her then husband Dave. Mave was a successful solo artist before this song. I would hear sing "Come By Here My Boy" on the radio before I went to school and then there she was teaching me. That was a unique experience. I will always hold those precious memories dear to my heart. Her voice is still as sweet as it was back then. Keepi on doing what God has blessyou with Mave. Love you.

Most of all Caribbean songs doesn't have a karaoke version and this saddens me so much! We have such strong lyrics in our songs, especially when we venture out of the Soca genre. Singing Sandra, Ella Andell, David Rudder, Black Stalin etc doesn't have any karaoke versions for fans to enjoy. I wish and pray that someone takes the initiative to change this.

I remember that song like it was yesterday, I was very young, growing up in Carrriacou, the sister isle of Grenada, listening to "Dave Elcock in the morning" on the radio. In those days it was only AM radio Guardian and Radio 610 in those days. My parent was born in Trinidad, my grand mother emigrated to Trinidad from Carriacou in the 1920's, all her kids were born there etc so Trinidad, its culture (and of course music) was second only to Carriacou! By the way, Carriacou and Grenada produced a number of artists that made it both big and small in Trinidad. Mavis John, Valentino, Bomber, Paul Keens Douglas, Tangler (Osborne Augustine), the list is long and distinguished !!!!! Keep sharing these classics.......
@anns.7189
@anns.7189 7 жыл бұрын
I do NOT know who Tangler is, but I am quite sure, Paul Keens-Douglas, whom I know and Mavis John were born in T&T, but you are right, his father was born in Grenada, I am NOT quite sure about his mom and in the case of Mavis, it may also be one parent.

By the way, Radio Guardian and Radio 610 are one of the same kind. You meant to say, Radio Trinidad and Radio Guardian or 610.

Yes, I KNOW! That was why I said, Radio Guardian and Radio 610 was one of the same kind. If you had read Bernard's statement above, you would have seen where he listed Radio Guardian and Radio 610 AM as two entities when in fact, it was one of the same kind. Radio Trinidad was indeed 730 AM and another entity by itself. Thank you, SuperSnk1!
