I think he knew how big he could have been, and it spooked him a bit. People were calling him the next Prince, and I don't believe that's an exaggeration (I have the highest respect for Prince btw) - but it's true, we'll never really know because he never really followed through :)

A lot of people say he's like MJ and Prince, but to me his antecedents are closer to James Brown and Marvin Gaye. His voice is so unique...it's clear and he can strike the high notes like a boss, but has the growl and gravel of classic blues singers. Super unique...too bad we never heard more of him through the years.

hey, you even make 1 album as great as Introducing the Hardline, you've cemented yourself as a legend. Willing to bet there are plenty of singers and bands out there who lasted longer than he did in the headlines but didn't make an album anywhere near as good. All original songs except for the final, 'Who's Loving You' - still one of the great covers of that song, still can't decide between that cover, the Jackson 5's cover and the original by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

He killed his own career by getting overhyped, buying into that hype, and treating everyone like he was their better. While Kanye did the same thing sucessfully many years later, TTD was not able to pull it off.

Interesting when you hear what George Michael said at his live performance, singing a cover of ‘Let Her Down Easy’ ... a beautiful song written by TTD. George Michael says that Sony destroyed his career by keeping him under contract but not giving him albums ... rather like they tried with George Michael. The live cover is great, but the original is very special. 😊

You really need to hear his cover of "Who's Loving You?" He had all kinds of potential, and his first album "The Hardline According to Terrence Trent D'Arby", which this song came from, was a big hit, but when he started saying he was going to surpass MJ and Prince, the public soured on him. It didn't help that his second album, "Neither Fish Nor Flesh", was a total disaster that his career never entirely recovered from.

Neither Fish Nor Flesh wasn’t a total disaster. It just wasn’t a commercial success. TTD succumbed to the acclaim that the media fed him during the release of the first album. But each album since has been amazing. His Best is actually on “Sympathy Or Damn”. An album everyone should check out
