Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life

10 жыл бұрын

You Bet Your Life featured many famous authors as contestants over the years, most likely due to Groucho's admiration for writers. Here we have the veddy, veddy British C.S. Forrester, author of the wildly popular Horatio Hornblower series, as well as the novel "The African Queen", which director John Huston turned into a Oscar winning classic film.
COUPLE #1: May Buzzell / C.S. Forrester, famous novelist
COUPLE #2: Eileen Thomas, secretary for Hollywood stars Tyronne Power, Ava Gardener and Eddie Fisher / Elmer "Slim" Von Schaible, who raises Siberian Huskies for rescue work

The manners and dress and demeanor of the guests - particularly Mr Forester and his partner - are stunning and indicative of how society has declined these days!

Another wonderful and very entertaining episode. Thanks again, Gary! Groucho is at the top of his game, and the contestants all had a lot to offer. (I knew all the songs, too, which shows how creaky I am.)

I'm certainly a Groucho fan, but sometimes I just wish he would just shut up and let the contestant say what he was going to say instead of interrupting in all the time. The man with the huskies, for example was getting ready to say something that sounded very interesting about people who have frozen to death, but Groucho kept butting in till the moment was lost.

I've read three of his "Horatio Hornblower" novels, and I enjoyed them immensely. I believe he wrote eleven of them altogether, and want to go on reading the others. The main problem that i have is dealing with all of that naval jargon--much of it from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Forester and his partner won $1000.00 in the first round. Groucho says if they miss the big money they are left with $500 for the night. Does that mean each to split $1000 or $500 between them?
