I don’t even know if you realize the huge impact you have on people with your intro to planning videos. I have always users a planner for work because I like to see things in writing. In October 2020 I retired and I was lost. I ran into your videos and they saved me. I found out I didn’t have to have a big corporate job to have a planner. I found joy in decorating my planner and started managing my home. It’s been amazing. Thank you so much Mary Ellen!

The biggest mistake people make with planners is buying planners when they have nothing to plan. I think most people need a weekly to-do list more so than a planner.

it took me about 6 months to figure out what setup works best for me. It's all about functionality and your life. Vertical is so good because it's so flexible for everyone.

I have been watching Happy Planner videos all week in preparation for setting up for the new year. I’m a single mom of two kids under five, I have a full time job, I’m a full time student and I have ADHD so I have a ton of stuff to track! This video was super informative and I love your content!

I have ADD as well and this made perfect sense to me, I'm also a fellow Texan. I love all the bright colors. It's very interesting. I'm working on giving myself permission to be original and do what works for me.

This is by far the most helpful beginner planning video I've come across. I kind of always believed that you had to be a super busy person for using a planner to make any sense- and I really don't fit that description. I have mental illnesses that impact my life enough that I'm not able to work. There are lots of everyday things that aren't a big deal for most people but that cause me great anxiety and require much of my mental energy for the day. This doesn't make for a jam packed schedule. But I'm discovering that planning could actually be a helpful tool for me. I can use it to track my mood state (I have bipolar disorder so this info is really helpful for me and my doctor). I can use it to journal and to practice gratitude. And any space I don't fill with my not-so-busy life is a perfect place to put a sticker. I am lucky enough to live with my parents who are very supportive of me in every way. It's important to me that I contribute to household chores but cleaning is one of those anxiety-triggering, it-makes-no-sense-that-this-is-so-difficult everyday tasks I mentioned. I'm hoping that recording when tasks need to be done and marking when I've finished one will help make me feel more in control, ease some of the anxiety associated with them, and help me ask for help when needed. Also, who isn't more motivated when you get a shiny sticker for completing a task? ;) Please pardon me for the long comment. I've just found your videos to be very helpful and motivating and I wanted to share.

Great ideas Briala =)so glad I saw your message here because it will also help me help my daughter this way because she also isn't able to work and this will give her a better way with things to do that will help with her adhd/anxiety Lyme/ R.M.S.F. etc. Thank you!! Look into Lyme Disease on Facebook groups and here dear. Many are told they are B.P. when they are truly Lyme with a coinfection like Bartonella. Maybe this will help you? You never know. I also have really bad anxiety due to LYME. Happy New Year!

I plan much like you in terms of priorities and not scheduling tasks unless they must be done on a specific day. Because of that, I gave up on the vertical and hourly spreads (as much as I love the way they look) and have gone with the dashboard layout. It fits my planning style so much better.

Thank you for making this video. These types of planners have always intimidated me because I’m never sure where to start. I don’t work for medical reasons, so I never thought I had anything to track. But after trying loads of other things like normal diaries and bullet journals, nothing ever worked for me. I’m looking for somewhere I can just dump my brain, this might be it for me. But I think I might not do the sticker thing. I do admire the beauty for planners who choose to, but it make things to complicated for me. And I’m neurodiverse as well. :)

I have gotten into such a weird phase in my planning - I was just getting used to decorating vertical (which is my favourite layout) and then I got promoted to management, which is great, but it meant that I didn't have enough space to put work in my day to day vertical planner, so I got an hourly + goals extension pack just for work (to have two whole pages for to-dos and a space to schedule meetings by time) but my outside-work life isn't busy enough to fill a vertical planner on its own, so I had to move my personal life to dashboard, and now I have two layouts that work for me but I'm not in love with decorating. Ugh!!

If the vertical is too much space for a daily planner maybe combine it with memory keeping so it had two purposes. Or every day (personal) planner plus wellness. Use it for two purposes.

This is insanely helpful. I've been using a HP for a month and am loving it, but still struggle with how to use it. You've given me some great food for thought! I bought the exact same planner as this last year and I barely used it. I think I wrote like 5 things in it the whole year! How much time does it take to plan everything? It looks like it would be very time consuming to decorate and write everything down.

It can be time consuming depending on how far you take it (lettering, doodles etc) but it’s a really fun hobby that for me combines art with organization. The best of both worlds!
