In today's Wednesday in the Workshop I walk through how to add RTV High Temp Gasket Maker to your jig mold in order to remove the collar when pouring a jig head. This technique could be used in a number of applications when you want to "plug" a portion of the mold to keep that section from filling in. Best thing of all... you don't damage or permanently alter the mold as the RTV can be removed should you decide to go back to the "standard" design. I hope this can be a help to you!

Funny thing is I searched in google on how to remove the collar and this was the first video that popped up. Gotta love evergreen content and the power of a search engine.

Thank you! Just yesterday morning, I was thinking about how to do this while trying different ways to cut off the collar. Never thought of RTV. Can't wait to try it.

What a good idea. I've been pouring Do-It molds since the early 70s and would not have thought of that. I'm new to your channel. It's great!!

Well done. I have a question though, how many pours can you expect to get before the RTV gets loose?

Thank ya sir! If the mold is clean and you use the red stuff, at least in my experience, it will last until I take a razor blade to it to remove it. I suppose each mold is different… lead is different (clean/dirty, pure soft/mixed with hardening metals, etc), temps are different per maker, so anything’s possible… but even still… it should be a good long while.

I could use this same method to "eliminate" the portion of lead "behind" the collar also. On numerous jig molds, I'd like to eliminate the portion of lead behind the collar. The "bait keeper" portion, as I prefer to tie in wire bait keepers on all my jigs.

Do you think this compound would be good to replace an eye indent in the Herring Head mold that a previous owner decided to machine out? Is it shapable over time, and how well do you think it would attach to the inside of the mold cavity? Clearly it worked in the hook application, but I wonder what else I could use to reset that eye indention.

Its pretty thick, but its also very sticky, can get "stringy" so molding may be a challenge. You could try to time it just right to where it gets thick enough to hold in a position, but dries out a touch so you're not pulling "strings" off it... tough call... As for staying power, it certainly does well in small doses surrounded by metal... whether it would stay put with, effectively, only one side holding on... another tough call. On the bright side, its cheap and if it doesn't work you can remove it to either try again or try a different approach, so no risk in giving it a go!

Need to do this on a couple of my molds. I made a hybrid jig underspin with the pony head mold but the lead hook keeper tears the plastic when I push the soft plastic body up out of the way to tie in the marabou before sliding it back down.

It can be helpful. Truth be told, sometimes it’s just easier to pour and snip, but every now and then this approach is helpful!

Will the blue rtv work it temp is top out at 500 degree
@SDGCustomLurecraft

Hey Tim, I would stick with Red as lead doesn’t melt until 622 degrees so you’d be pouring hotter than it can handle.

Great question, and one I don’t have an answer for. Since I’ve used it I have yet to see any wear and having removed the stuff from another mold I bought from a guy, it didn’t come out without some effort, so my GUESS is “A LOT”. Barring some damage you may do from hook itself pressing on the RTV, I think it will hold up against the lead for a long, long time.

Nice, I bet so! Is it easy to remove if you want to later? I also use RTV (because it’s flexible) in areas where I still want to hook to sit, but “seal up” around it to prevent flashing. That wouldn’t be an application for alum filler, would it?

Short of punching small aluminum disks, then stacking and gluing them together until you get the thickness you're after, nothing else comes to mind. That may be a stretch though.

Yeah, that's not gonna happen. 😅 I may just have to drill out the eyes on that one size.
