You can cycle from Waterloo south of the river Whitechapel in the east end in about 20 minutes, entirely on protected cycled lanes and very quiet streets.
The route is three and a half miles long (5.6km) and makes use of filtered streets round Waterloo including The Cut, Cycleway 6, Cycleway 3, Cycleway 2 and the new Mansell Street link.
By public transport the journey takes about half an hour and requires a change of train, or a longer bus.

If you don';t fancy waiting at Tower Gateway traffic lights( those intervals are loooong), you can squeeze through Trinity Square, underneath Fenchurch Street Stn. and up through Jewry St. to Aldgate Stn., saves you couple of minutes and it's not typically busy

I have a great suggestion. Crossrail has just opened so in honour of it you should do a bike ride from Paddington to Abbey Wood or vice versa, which is the new section (only one accessed via the core at the moment) and then compare this with other modes of transport.

In the Netherlands all pedestrian crossings over cycleways are zebra crossings. This is how it shouold be done in the UK as well, particularly as our traffic lights are quite dumb and will often keep you waiting for no apparent reason.
@Londoncycleroutes
@Londoncycleroutes 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea! We already have them at bus stop bypasses so makes sense, simpler than a yellow light
@BicycleDutch
@BicycleDutch 2 жыл бұрын
Well that depends on what city you look at and even within cities there are different solutions. We do tend to have signalised crossings at very busy places such as in front of Amsterdam Centraal, but lights are not normally used for interactions between pedestrians and cyclists. Many cities don't do the zebra crossings either and that also works. (Pedestrians can also cross where they like.) As a pedestrian you need only a very small gap in the cycling traffic to make the crossing of about 4 to 5 steps. So that is normally not a problem at all.

The Waterloo cycle route and the east-west cycle routes are brilliant and a joy to cycle on. The Whitechapel portion of it is horrible. I purposely avoid cycling there, preferring to cycle on the main road instead. Many times I've had cars turning in or out of side streets almost hit me. Because of this I have to be extra vigilant of the cars on the road to determine whether they've seen me. Cycling on the road among the cars actually feels more safe to me as I feel I'm more visible to cars and as a result I have to be less vigilant of them turning into me. And that's before I get into how many pedestrians there are walking in the cycle line, or food delivery drivers cycling the wrong way down the cycling lane (which seems to be endemic of most cycle lines I've cycled on especially in East London). Sadly I've never seen law enforcement officers tackle anyone for walking in the cycling lane or anyone going the wrong way, so it seems like this is with us to stay.

What a random and potentially dangerous and inappropriate place for a tour group to gather! Seems a bit odd of the guide. Id guess the guide is talking about Castle Baynard which stood in that area until 1666 and was a bit like the idea of another Tower of London, but in the West instead. In fact there used to be another tower north of St Paul’s called Montfichet which also acted as this sorta Norman defence circling the City and showing the residents who is really in charge around there…imagine 3 towers! That’s a statement.

The trouble with the yellow flashing light idea is that a large number of cyclists will treat is as a green light, and go straight through the crossing without looking for or giving way to pedestrians. Ultimately the order of priorities in cities like London should be Pedestrians>cycles>cars.
@Londoncycleroutes
@Londoncycleroutes 2 жыл бұрын
Agree about priorities but not sure about this reasoning - we have zebras across Cycleways which are functionally the same, and someone ignoring a flashing yellow light would ignore a red anyway
