This is a quick and easy guide to sharpen your garden tools. It's absolutely for beginners (without fuss or drama) or just those who need a refresher. Let's keep things super simple and sharpen your secateurs, shears, and more - a guide for everyone.
There are two types of sharpening, you can go in for the expert level with flat-based sharpening stones and get the most beautiful, mirror edge that you can shave with or we can go down the practical "field sharpening" route where we can sharpen quickly and easily making sure we always have a sharp tool for the job, even when we are knee-deep in pruning.
I'm going to take the fear, complications, and fuss out of sharpening your garden tools and show you that we can all manage our tools so that we always get a cut rather than a crushed stem.
▶TOOLS I RECOMMEND FOR SHARPENING◀
SHARPAL Pocket sharpener I use in this video: amzn.to/3EBb81a
SHARPAL multi sharpener, this does lots of different types of blades easily. I use this on my hedging shears as well as secateurs, knives and more: amzn.to/3i7huMQ

Excellent tutorial. You are a very good teacher. It pains me that we've lost so many of this type of life skill. IMO, everyone should know how to do basic sharpening. Dull tools are dangerous and darned aggravating to use...Sharp tools are a joy to use!

Oh I agree sharp tool make life so much easier I’ve lost a lot of these skills too… I used to be a woodworker(many moons ago) but these days I wouldn’t be able to sharpen a chisel of a plane 😢.

This was a very good, no fuss sharpening instructional and entertaining to watch. I use a cheap ($10), slender diamond grit pen that's conical on one end and flat on the other. Keeping the flat side flat on your blade is just as important as the beveled edge. Up until 3 years ago I've been using an antique pair of secateurs but the rusty old things became too loose to cut reliably. My new pair is nearly identical in design to yours and unpainted. Reading reviews I worried about rust. It takes less than 5 min to wipe off any plant sap with hot water and mild soap after each use while taking as much care to dry them after. They remain rust and stain free after 3 years of heavy use, even in the pivot joint. When putting them away for the season I use an old carpenters trick used for bare metal machinery tables - furniture paste wax (NOT the spray can stuff). It's been a great rust inhibitor. I've never oiled my secateurs as I understand oils can contaminate plants. Furniture paste wax is essentially non toxic. Hope you find that works for you as well as it has for me.

This is exactly what I needed to sharpen my garden tools and my skills. Thank you for giving such clear instructions with a fantastic sense of humor. Oh, and I promise to hold to your "rule" of making it sound a lot more difficult. I can hardly wait to say "burr" and "honing edge" when I talk about how I've repaired all the tools. 🤣

Fellow Scot here. I was pretty much despairing of the state of all my garden blades and began watching videos on how to rescue my Felcos - they're the only ones small enough and comfortable enough for my tiny, aging hands. I probably do need to take my old pair apart, completely clean (including the rust ...), sharpen, replace the spring and put them back together again, but I'd just ordered another pair as insurance, with spare parts. Thanks to your video, I realise I don't need to make this a "big thing" and I should receive my wee sharpener in the mail tomorrow. Turning over a new leaf here and will hopefully not be wrangling with secateurs and loppers with blunt blades this year. I'm no longer going to just bung them in a trug, covered in all sorts of nastiness and leave them to fester in the garage. Happy gardening in 2024.

My fiskars pruning shears were in bad shape as I abused them over the years. I was thinking of replacing them but I found disassembling allowed me to use a full size stone to fix both the flat side and get a nice edge back on. Only took a few minutes to take apart. I like this video to keep a maintenance edge on them as I go.

Hello from Fennville, Michigan!!! I AM IN LOVE WITH YOUR CHANNEL. I left a comment on another video, the one about cutting store bought basil, and how to keep them growing, and I am so happy that I found you and your channel. Thank you for your knowledge of gardening and sharing it with me...us...the world. I love your accent and love listening to you speak, that and the knowledge of your skills. Thank you so much,.It makes it so much easier for me to look forward to getting outside on our 2.5 acre land and look at my "garden" and work on my gardening skills. Now with the weather turning cold here, I will have to watch your videos from the first one to last one and take notes. (I will from now on call you Professor Eli). To you and Kate: Stay safe and Stay Healthy.

Morning Tavo it's so lovely to have you on board and this was a fabulous comment for me to wake up to this morning :) I went hunting but couldn't see your previous comment on the basil video :( booooo But so happy to have you hear now :) I laughed at Professor Eli, not sure how that would go down with my colleagues though :) Here Professor is a very senior academic position, way, way, way more senior than I am - I'm much more on a TA level ha ha ha ha. but I'll take the compliment. I suspect Michigan has much colder winters than we do. Our problem in Scotland is more that it's colder all year - even our summers aren't particularly hot, but we get A LOT of rain, so it's cold and wet and grey... a particular challenge for gardening :) Now I do have to check... are you a spartan or a blue? You will see my spartan hat in some of the videos :)

Another step on my learning curve, thanks! :D I've invested in that Sharpal! True confessions, I went a bit spendy back in the spring and invested in some good Japanese secateurs. Unfortunately, after a couple of months I was horrified to see they'd gone a bit rusty. The internet suggested vinegar to get rid of it. I only had apple cider vinegar. It did take the rust off, but also turned the blades and the join in the middle (also submerged in the glass of ACV) black, when previously it had been shiny stainless steel.... I'm not sure that it actually damaged the blades, but the colour change was a bit of a shock and I have resolved to do better and am apologising to my secateurs by buying them a nice sharpener.
@eliandkate

@@eliandkate Maybe, but we have mostly shade and are on heavy clay- some things like this and we grow them, but many plants give up. We have a lovely fern area- I love ferns. And one sunny spot has a herb bed, the other some flowers. The shady aspect comes into its own in a heatwave with hammocks...

Thank you Tina. Oil wise, just whatever we have at the time. We are both cyclists so we usually have oil for our bikes and that tends to get used for most things. 😀 I'm not particular to one brand or another.

Hey JB. I think sometimes we are all guilty of forgetting to take care of things :) I’ve had a couple of those styles of sharpening tools and they’re about 3 years old now. Not about replacing bits on them to be honest as it’s not something I’ve ever thought about :)

I don't personally because I dont have any of those types of spades but you, you can use this technique to sharpen spades, hoes, hedging shears etc. I especially like to make sure my home is sharp for chopping at the weeds. It makes life so much easier. And thank you so much for the coffee :) I got a notification this morning. Now have to think of how best to put that towards a video.... My anvil does not have a groove in it Its flat will that dull the blade edge on every cut?
@eliandkate
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
Not sure if you mean an anvil or a sharpening tool If it’s a sharpening tool then no. It doesn’t need an angle because it’s you who holds the tool at an angle to the blade. It will only dull it if you run the flat edge against the blade edge.

As a retired primary school teacher, this entire video gave me anxiety. 😱 But a great video, Eli. I sharpen mine all the time. It's recommended you clean your tool between pruning each rose bush (etc) to avoid spreading any deseases between plants. I carry a small microfiber cloth sprayed with antibacterial to give it a wipe as I go around the garden, because I'm way too lazy to take it back to kitchen each time. Thanks Eli. And please stop waving your fingers in your pruners. 🫣 Give me nightmares.
