I run my gardening business, my lawn cutting round and set my prices to what I see fit. My minimum grass cut starts from £20 and I increase it accordingly but sometimes you come across situations where someone is charging so much less that you just cant compete.

I always explain there are 3 kinds of gardener....1 the old retired guy who doesn't charge much but doesn't do much either 2 the ones that promise everything but then disappear from the face of the earth then 3 me. Same day and roughly time every fortnight and I'll remind you the day before and call if not coming( weather)...its the old saying" buy cheap buy twice"

I gave a price for a small grass cut and a little fortnightly tidying up in the spring. Didn't hear back and thought nothing of it. Got a call 2 months later to ask if I could do the work, after a little chat with the customer at the end of the first visit it turns out they had someone coming for FREE as they liked doing gardening! Turns out they weren't happy with the standard of his work and his timekeeping so they called me back...! I'm not sure which is worse, working for free or complaining about someone's work when you're not paying them...

Few years ago i did a long grass job in a garden. He was a neighbour of a garden i do regular. We agreed a price, so spent 1/2hr or so chomping through long grass untill it was down to a reasonable level. He came out all over the moon saying how good it looked, blah blah blah. Then came the bargaining. I had about three wheelie bins full of grass plus bags from other gardens. It was only when i said to him, I'll deliver all this back again if you don't pay what we agreed on that he paid. I can never get over how people treat gardeners. You wouldn't treat a plumber, spark or a carpet fitter like that. I hate doing one off jobs because of the likes of this. Lots of medium gardens that are in and out within the hour, all close together, all nice people. Thats what I've got after 30yrs of trying to see the good in everyone. Most people take the piss and want stuff done on the cheap and nasty.

Been in the garden maintenence game a fairly long time working for myself, seen many guys come and go from one year to the next. Know your worth, theres loads of work out there. I havent really taken on any new work for 2 or 3 years now, ive just been too busy. If you do a good job and are reliable, it will be you who says to the customer you cant or dont have time for the job anymore not the other way around. Theres always the new old guy who's retired, and thinks gardening is an easy pass time or the guy who doesnt work or lost his job trys to take it up for a month or 2. Dont let it annoy you, it is what it is. Every industry which offers services is the same.

£10 per hour, she's having a laugh. I had an existing customer 2 weeks ago, (been going for 2.5 years), charged between £20 - 35 depending on how much weeding and shrub work I did, and consistently went fortnightly in the growing season. She said that she had someone to do it for half the price. Later discovered it was the neighbour's gardener, who lived on the same street as the clients. Guess they'll be wheeling the mower down the street, doing 2 for price of one, with no overheads, van, website, equipment etc Good luck to them!!

Trouble is our world is now full of comfortably-off, early-retired part-timers & “hobbyists” who’ve set themselves up in every neck o’ the woods. Not easy to compete on price with this crowd. Quite a lot of them haven’t got a clue. They don’t even know their plants, how to care for them or how or when to prune…and some of them seem positively proud to admit it. One of these characters told me recently…and I quote : “I don’t do gardening. Don’t know a plant from a weed mate. Just mow grass, strim and cut hedges”. It’s like a plumber boasting that he doesn’t know how to solder! People like this give the whole trade a bad reputation and devalue the rest of us who are trying our best.
@smvsspould

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to mow, weed and strim, a lot of people want just that. If you want to be more of a horticulturalist and work in borders / pruning / planting what works best for a given orientation to the sun / soil pH etc then absolutely no problem but if you do work on just a basic lawn and path garden, just strimming and mowing so long as it's tidy is totally fine.

I've just filmed and edited that yesterday as it happens but it won't be out until dec/Jan I think. All I do though, is write a few months in advance, all me fortnightly and monthly. I have a space once a month allocated for big jobs and small one off jobs I just put into the end of my day. I'll then write the amount, when the jobs done, I'll circle it. When they've paid me, I'll tick it. Quite basic but very simple for me to understand. When rain is due, its a case of scribbling out and re-writing them wherever you want.
