Lionel, you inspired me to do my first sprint distance tri in June 2019. I trained from Jan-June and felt ready. However I did not train open water. Long story short, the swim ate me up (hypervent, panic, etc). I literally was the last person out of the water. I finished the race but felt defeated. I haven’t trained since. I’ve gained 20 l lbs. I follow you closely, and felt terrible for you about your Kona result. But, I want to have a re-birth and achieve what I know I can achieve. With this video, you have once again inspired me. Tomorrow the training starts. Thanks Lionel. Always know the motivation you provide to regular Joes like me!

@Shane B. Having been through similar open water swim issues...you can check out the Tower 26 channel they have a lot of advice and programs for overcoming open water start issues. My advice. Just go swim in the pool, even if it’s just 100m.....but never quit.

Hey Shane, noooo...you sounded really motivated to do your first sprint and that you enjoyed the training...a lot of people are scared of the open water...i was too when i started, but its something i know you can overcome! Dont give up! Take it slowly in open water and youll buikd up confidence. You can do it!!!!

Tip: While your working on your conditioning in the pool, put on your suit and goggles and head out to your nearest open body of water, not to swim but simply just float around, even if it's just 5 mins the first time. Get your face wet, get used to looking into open water, doggie paddle around. Just get comfortable in it. Graduate into a few strokes. stick with it and in no time, you will be knocking out a 2000M training swim.

@Lionel Sanders. I watched Cam Wurf interview on Tower 26. He has a wealth of swim bike and run coaches, advisors and sponsors working on all aspects of his training and nutrition. This model is working well for him and I feel you are much more able to continuing winning in this sport. You don’t have to lose your freedoms by working with others. We love you man and love seeing you win. Keep going and learning. I just had a nutrition breakdown in training yesterday which has bummed me out and I know that feeling of being an idiot. Thanks for helping us all through your videos. I learn more from them then most training videos out there (and I know these aren’t training videos).

With such a high sweat rate, it would be extremely difficult to excel in ironman distance races held in extreme heat conditions, such as Ironman Kona. Lionel, your second place finish at Kona in 2017 was extraordinary and I was lucky enough to witness it in person. I believe that when racing ironman distance races, you should first concentrate on cold weather races and, possibly, then move towards warmer races, which could culminate in racing Kona again. You are an immense source of inspiration and I wish you absolute success in all your endeavours.

Lionel is like many triathletes and myself. We have addictive personalities and we over think everything! If we start something we go full throttle or not at all. Constantly looking at numbers, stats and everything tech related. Also like to train alone and self coach. We have no problems with motivation to train if anything we have problems over training. Addiction to whatever it is we have set our minds on. Learning from mistakes but than repeating them. Love ya Lionel I can relate to you!

His mouth is saying: "I will listen to my coach". His mind is thinking: "No way. I know what's best for me!" He keeps repeating the same thing over and over again: "A loss is a humbling experience and I will learn from this". And then he doesn't. Lionel is blessed with so much talent. But his ego is even bigger. And that's why he will probably never win Kona. But I'll be happy for him if he proves me wrong.

Disappointed to learn you don’t read comments but that’s probably smart. So excited that you’re building a team. Others have them but I doubt they can match your will to win. Victories are in your future-it’ll be an amazing journal. Hopefully you get the physiological data along the way. That data will tell you what you can’t necessarily perceive yourself, no matter how well you know yourself.
