Well said. I like to remind clients that horses don't like pain/discomfort. If a horse isn't giving the handler what is wanted, then it's either miscommunication or a physical issue. Horses WANT to find peace and agreement.

Wow, really really good observational skills, this is almost certainly a mistake I make with my horse without ever knowing. Warwick is really amazing with his understanding of horse-learning.

I had a tb, who I would have to go a mile to get what I wanted from him, he was very laid back, but in the wrong hands would have turned nasty. Best horse I've ever owned.

this is a habit that i have got into doing. when we were out hacking my horse would sometimes stop of her own accord, and i would allow her to, without touching my reins. now she doesn’t understand why i ask her to move after she has stopped herself. very helpful video, thank you🙂

This is brilliant! I don't think I have ever had an instructor explain things like this, if they did I mis-understood for sure because I have been getting this so wrong!

Hey Warwick, I love your teaching style. I saw in one of your videos that you had a telescopic whip that you collapsed and put in your back pocket. Can I know where you got that? I work with horses as a chiropractor and sometimes owners have issues that I help them correct so I can be safe. It would be great to have a whip that I can collapse and keep with me when I work so I don't have to go back to my truck.

That is true. For sure if visiting I would have been the reason why any wild horse that my sister Sharon may have had to deal with while living without a well for awhile until she got proper help it wouldn't have refused to do something for me too.

I’ve got a mare who has been ridden very little. She doesn’t know how to go forward or else I don’t know how to get her to, and when we went for a ride the other night she just stood there while my husband rode away then she started to back up I tried pulling her head to one side to get her off balance etc. Eventually she did go forward and caught up but because we were right by the other horses they came galloping across the pasture and prairie decided she was gonna buck or crowhop whatever it was she did she didn’t lose me I lost my right stirrup but got it back I was not on her face at all. Eventually she started to go and caught up to my husband then she decided to rear I kept my weight forward she may not have gone that high I couldn’t tell she’s a small Arab but I think she was just seeing what she could get away with she’s 15 years old. I was thinking about hauling her away from home and riding elsewhere she’ll be better but I had some advice from a lady who used to train horses that she’s got to learn not to do that even at home. Makes sense I 🤔 think.

The first question I have to ask is "Have you, in a step by step fashion, taught her how to go forward when you ask, or did you just expect her to know?"

Warwick's observations are really good. I occasionally view his videos and listen to his podcasts. However, all these issues are very discouraging for people who even would remotely consider having a horse. I would NEVER EVER want to have a horse, listening to Warwick, knowing what it entails, and this video is only 1/10th of a percent of all the troubles you would encounter. I would have to pay thousands for the upkeep of a horse, only to fret about how badly I get treated by that animal, how many kudos I have with that animal, and if it is not offended by me, and if it is even remotely interested in doing something. There's a reason racing stables call these animals money munchers because that's basically all they do and are interested in. The humans who provide all these resources to them are just annoying them. In that framework; good luck with re-homing thousands of excess wild mustangs to people who watch al these videos. Very discouraging. If you want a real costly problem on so many different levels, get yourself a horse.

Jeez you're a whole bucket of rainbows aren't you. Horses aren't "annoyed by" humans unless you make yourself a nuisance to them. I don't own horses nor did I grow up around them or ride them much, and this video filled me with nothing but love and yearning in my heart for the amazing level of subtle communication that can be achieved between a horse and rider. These are animals that evolved over millions of years who had nothing to do with us until recently, and yet still we are able to communicate so much. You're right, if money is a concern they're not a good pet (Which is why I don't have them!) if you're in the wrong area. But if you feel discouraged by this video, its not because horses are inherently discouraging animals, its because they simply aren't for you.

You came to the wrong channel mate. I think you've missed the point of everything Warwick is doing. People like you view animals as seperate entities as humans versus all of us being a part of this natural world. We are all more alike than you give us credit. Race horses get primo treatment and are asked to do incredibly taxing jobs (i don't personally support that industry). I raised a yearling mustang for over a decade starting from the time i was 10 years old. That horse was a puppy dog always in our business and was never spoiled but there was a mutual love. It wasn't my horse per se so when my dad rehomed her i had no choice however that animal was a part of our family. Mustangs are some of the brightest, easiest keepers with excellent genetics geared toward survival of the fittest. They are here (the US) through the sales and transportation of humans, we have always been intertwined. Warwick is one of the few mentors who actually give a crap about mutual respect and patience. There's a reason a lot of his work is inspired by modern advances in human psychology. We are far more similar than we are different from them. The right ownership provides, security, freedom, and mutual respect. I just don't think you've tapped into the essence of what he is doing or what a relationship with most mammals can be.
