In this video, we show you how it is possible to use a pump-fed filter system with a bottom drain. This method eliminates the need for an over the top expensive filter room with a gravity-fed filter system.
Gravity-fed filter systems are very popular because it enables you to incorporate a bottom drain in your pond where it looks great and works exceptionally well in collecting debris and sending it to the filter system. The problem with this setup is the sheer size of the filter housing or filter room needed which can be very costly for this to work properly.
The costs of a system are enormous due to the amount of additional building work required, materials and it is very labour intensive.
Not only are the costs expensive, but you will also need to ensure you have enough space for maintenance and correct plumbing especially for wastewater.
Another common problem, as most of these filter housing rooms are underground or ground level, filter room covers are usually needed are very heavy and difficult to move. This then makes filter maintenance more tricky and time-consuming ultimately people just end up ignoring routine cleaning as it can be a pain in the neck.
We have been to so many jobs where our customers spent a fortune on a pond with a similar gravity filter room and most of them complain about accessibility and no room for equipment upgrades/maintenance.
With the system we show you in this video, you can still use a bottom drain and also a pump-fed filter system.
A pump fed system can be installed above the level of the pond anywhere you choose like in the garden, shed or garage.
The main advantage of this is that most people already have an area where this system can be placed and do not need to build a dedicated filter area. You may still need some sort of concrete base or similar but it will cost a fraction of the price.
Bottom drains are a good asset to any pond however the old fashioned way of a gravity filter in our opinion is very outdated and totally overpriced. Ponds do not need to cost the earth to enjoy our fish and other wildlife.
