Hi, Alex. I am from the Philippines. I am half-Chinese, but my late father was pure Chinese, where his parents came from Jinjiang, Fujian province (福建省晉江市), the place where most of the Chinese in the Philippines came from. You were right, China was diverse and we cannot expect everything to be the same, not even the food and culture.

My first lesson about rich diversity of China is from Chinese Yuan. There are 5 languages printed on the note.

When the Soviet Union was established, lots of Russian people migrated to Xinjiang to escape possible persecutions. They have lived in Xinjiang ever since.

Diversity? Hell yeah, many cities have it. Don't forget Yunnan and Kunming, 26 nationalities in the same area, all with their own cultures. I really love this part of China and the diversity of all China. "All nationalities are equal", that's from China's own constitution and all minorities are represented in the government. The Han-ethnocentricity people believe in just doesn't exist. It's a thing western people believe in because the judge China through their own race fixated imperialism.

Love your videos. China is a mix of cultures. It is totally unique. A developing and thriving country, where a great amount of ethnic groups live together and share cultures. It is not like countries in the american continent and Europe, where there's not such diversity, other places in Asia, like Japan, way less diverse in this terms etc. Great to see another video from you. I love interviews.

I find the part on a Russian restaurant in Tacheng quite funny. The lady owner doesn't look at all like an ethnic Russian. Russia, just like China, is very ethnically diverse, and many ethnic Russians have DNA of other ethnicities due to centuries of migration, occupations by foreign polities, forced people movement and post-revolution encouragement of ethnic integration. Above said, that lady seems to have very little pure ethnic Russian DNA (if there is such a thing). She may indeed have Russian ancestry but her looks suggest that she also has Kazakh/other Central Asian background, that would be common for people migrating south from the Russian Empire into Xinjiang. I'd also say that the names of her dishes and their appearance does not seem at all Russian, they are rather some derivative of some Turkic/Central Asian or perhaps Tartar dishes. I'm not challenging the lady, her ethnic story, or her food (which by the way looks delicious). I am just comparing it to other Russian restaurants and dishes I've encountered during my travels through Russia, Ukraine, other countries with sizeable Russian minorities, Western Europe and the USA. Coincidentally, many of those Russian restaurants are run and staffed by ex-Soviet people who are not ethnic Russians.

I'm a Black American and when I lived in China I dated a woman who was Xinjiang Chinese. I got to learn a lot and she considered herself Chinese even though she didn't look Chinese. She was proud of the nation.

Kazakh have been in China for a very long time - Long before 18th - 19th century! Kazakhstan was part of the Russian Empire, which is why Kazakh in Kazakhstan speak Russian and Kazakh, but they have been independent after the Russian Empire collapsed. Most Kazakh in China only speaks Chinese and Kazakh.

I notice some comments about the equality of ethnics in China, here I paste my other comment for you to have some information: China actually is unbelievably implementing preferential policies to minority ethnic groups, letting the major Han ethnics think they are treated as second-class citizens. I can try to name some for you but there will be a lot more than that, 1. in the one-Child policy era, all minority ethnic was allowed to have 2 or more children, which led to the population of Uygurs boomed on the contrary of what they reported Genocide after the founding of the PRC. 2. in the life-most-important college entrance exam, minority ethnics will automatically add on scores. 3. they are allowed to carry controlled weaponry because they have such traditions. 4. religious freedom, of course, Han also has, everyone has, but the Han seldom needs that so-called freedom, but that is another story. Don't get me wrong, as a Han person, although I have the feeling of being undermined by such policies, I still agree with them. That is because, different from some self-righteous minds who believe they understand Freedom and Equality, we Chinese see Freedom and Equality from a higher level, which should be added weighting factor, here I mean the population, Tradition, which we respect all differences from the minority ethnics. Harmony, which means understanding their feelings.

I did not know until recently there are actually Russian Chinese who have lived in China a few generations. The Russian Chinese are one of the 56 ethnicity groups of China. They live right here in Heilongjiang Province, which is just adjacent to my home province in China.

Greetings from Singapore! XinJiang looks like the coolest place in China! So diverse I am amazed.

Frankly even amongst Han Chinese there is much diversity. Of course Nationally, China prefers to play up similarities of ALL ethnic groups. But Han's speak a variety of dialects which in actual fact when compared to other places like say Europe, are effectively languages. I mean particularly a place like Fujian, many of the words don't even sound anywhere near PuTongHua. If you consider the Southern provinces as different in language and some customs, then the more homogenous areas basically other Northern plains. Peripheral areas in DongBei, South or South West and Western China have huge varieties of ethnicities. With population slow down and BRI/external circulation, these ethnic groups will play an even more pivotal role in coming decades. Also it looks like in time, China will also try to attract the best minds over to her Universities and will experience an influx of Immigrants to add to diversity. China has a ways to go to fully accommodate foreigners (as could be seen from some racial incidents involving Africans in Guangzhou area during Pandemic). But bigoted people are found everywhere in the world. With increase education and exposure, this should improve. As we can see already, there is a growing number of Inter Chinese-African marriages. West prefer to see China as faceless robots but it is the West that tends towards group think these days simplifying their view of the world. One thing ALL ethnicities share in common is love for food. Everyone has to eat.

As a overseas Chinese born in Indonesia, I knew what it likes living in such a diverse country. Indonesia has hundred of ethnicities including some seven millions Indonesian Chinese. China itself has 56 ethnic groups.

I have been to northern Xinjiang twice, spent time in Urumqi and in the countryside. It's very diverse and has best views and best food, for sure :) If it ever opens after the pandemic, I'm looking forward to come back again!

Even every Han Chinses is 'not always Han', during Northern and Southern dynasties, the ethnic called Xiabei (鲜卑), a Proto-Mongolic ancient nomadic, rules the northern part of China, and they blend into Han's culture by changing their Mongo surnames to Han ones, for example, Ruogan (若干) was converted to Gou (苟), which is my surname. I'm from Xi'an, the one of the ancient capital of that time, so probabilistically speaking, I'm 'half Mongo half Han'. I think westerners are having trouble understanding the concept of ethnicities of Chinese or what is China ? They just think Ughurs are Muslim and Caucasian , so it's a good idea to tell the world Chinese are hurting Uygur people, but Uygurs are Chinses. So I think what they really mean is that atheist Han Chinese are hurting Muslim Caucasian. Another large portion of minority of Chinese are Hui (回) Chinese, they are also Muslim, but they look a lot like Han Chinese, so are Chinese hurting Hui people ? ..... So I think the key takeaway is that westerners think Uygurs are bullyed by Chinese because they are Caucasian. My question to westerners is : If you say Chinese are hurting Uygurs, then which ethnicity of Chinses are your referring to ?

If I went to Xinjiang, I would just be eating the entire day. That food looked so good.

Alex...you are right in your comments and some critics are just ignorant as they have their own agenda. They are either jealous of you or they can't handle China's astounding success in handling over 50 minorities in the country. Certainly the West can't say they are able to take care of their own minorities. Just see how the Native Indians are treated in the US and First nations peoples are treated in Canada and how Aborigines are treated in Australia. These countries should be ashamed of themselves for the injustices meted out to the minorities. Keep up the good work, Alex and ignore those foolish and juvenile comments from those born losers.

Ha! In California we had lots of East Asian people in some areas, especially the Bay Area around San Francisco, but out here in Minnesota we have Hmong and some other East Asians, but I guess we're known for having people from everywhere.

That plate looks so tasty and delicious... As a south Italian (which implies we have a strong love for food and traditional food) I have so much respect for Asian countries and their long history of cousine and diversity in food. So rich and tasty. You need to dive in someone's culture to understand deeply. ❤ We italians get mad when other cultures destroy our original recipes to accommodate other types of palates and tastes. We're possessive of our cultural heritage and traditions we tend to think we're the best in the world cause of the Mediterranean climate and diet. But I truly believe that eastern countries have it similar to us due the respect they put into their cooking. The history keeps existing and that's what makes me think that Italy and Asian countries have a lot in common. Beautiful to see.

I'm half Russian and half Chinese. This video was extremely interesting for me. First, because there are a lot of Tatars and Kazakhs in Russia and it's very unusual for me to see them in China. 7:54 As an Indonesian, I always reminded of one of my Mom's cooking called "bistik" (read: 'bi' as in "bipolar/bilingual/etc." and 'stik' identical to "stick") everytime I see those in the other videos. It's derived from Western steak during colonial era but we developed it into our own. It's normally based on chicken, beef, or goat meat and typically served in similar fashion like those Xinjiang dish (I fail to understand the correct spelling, sorry😅), I think in this case this looks similar to how my Mom's bistik variety would look like. I love her cooking, maybe this dish will reminds me of my Mom's haha😋🤭

Tacheng's original name is Tarbagatai which is in Mongolian and it's a Mongolian land. Tacheng is really the abbreviation of it.
