We get asked a lot of great questions in our comments section and in our DMs - and by far the most frequently asked is "can I still become a lawyer if my grades aren't great?" In today's video, we want to answer that question by going through Lloyd's law school grades. We look at some things he did well, and some things he didn't do so well, and how he overcame them to become a corporate lawyer at an international law firm.

Love this! but where I am studying law the grading is so harsh, your first year grades with B and B+ is actually really amazing. Only about 3-10% of the class where I am will be sitting on consistent A range grades

Lloyd you've outdone yourself, you made a video about grades and nothing but grades but it was interesting all the way through.. really good flow. Love when smart people use their intellect/experience to analyze things and really give their mature views on things - not enough of that around.

Hi Lloyd! Back when I was in law school, I was terribly upset when I received the final grade for my property law course because it was lower than expected. Gosh, I remember thinking that I snuffed it up because that was the field I want to practice in after being fully qualified. As a result, that impacted my whole view about graduating with flying colors and led me to finish law school with the motto of 'as long as I pass the course in one piece, that's all that matters'. I'm so glad to hear that those with not so-great-GPAs are able to become lawyers too. Thanks so much for sharing your personal experience with us!

I’ve had average grades throughout my academic journey so far. I’m not the type of student to ace all my exams. I still try my best, though. Sometimes school can be difficult to navigate. Thanks for sharing this video with us. It sure helps out students who may be flunking and may be in need of motivation to do better.

Totally understand that - I've always been more practice oriented myself but have always tried hard in school regardless. Def hope the video is relatable to others who have had the same or similar experiences!

Thanks for sharing Lloyd! I've been watching your channel but this is the first time I comment. As someone recently went back to school to change career after working almost 4 years in my previous field, this video resonates with me a lot. Grade doesn't matter that much when it comes to job hunting and career outlook. When I was an undergrad student, I used to think that GPA is like tattoos which will be with me for the rest of my life, but now I'd like to think of it as a door that shows me the differnet paths to opportunities.

This video helped alot.. just received my second year semester one results and ended with a second lower (52%) for Tort Law. I went through a hard break-up just before the exams and things went downhill fast. I am still in shocked since I want to be an academic and figured that this might pull my final classification down as PhD requires a first class honours in law for direct admission. Now I guess I should just put the work in and try pulling my second semester grades up to reach a minimum of 60%.

Definitely apply - as cliché as it may sound, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Worth applying regardless of how you think you've done, and if you get a shot anywhere, do your absolute best at the internship. Good luck!

This was interesting to watch, thanks. I've gone back to college to study law having worked in tech (including legal tech) for the last 16 years, and was curious as to how grading was handled in other institutions. As someone who is usually on the other side of the interview process I can say that neither I nor my colleagues over the years have placed any emphasis on grades except when interviewing recent grads. Once someone has even a modicum of experience, their grades become unimportant. So when you say the D+ hasn't been an issue since, I sincerely doubt it will ever be again.

Hi! A random viewer from Thailand! One of our universities here requires its first year students to take a P.E. course too! And thanks for sharing this. I loved and did great in contract laws. But I realized later on that I wouldn't want to spend most of my time drafting and revising contracts, or deal with clients' expectations. My overall grades were average. I even got a D in Employment Law 😅. I guess I found it very boring and couldn't grasp the concept. Now working at a law firm where I'm happy that I can help my team maintain their well-being and fair treatment.

Thanks Lloyd for the inspirational sharing by telling us your story! 🥳Indeed you must be a brilliant student back then since u managed to get fair grades in law courses when you were a freshman! May I know if I am correct to say that the CGPA requirement for trainee/vac scheme application in ifirms would be at least a first class (over 3.5) + other significant commitments?
@EmandLloyd
@EmandLloyd Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don’t think a first class is a requirement for most firms - a 2:1 (around 3.3) is fine, and resume matters as well. It helps to have extracurriculars that show interest in the intended job/industry for sure (which for me was plenty of mooting)

I'm middle aged and work in a professional environment as an executive manager. In my observation, there are the "cool" kids and the nerds. Nerds do the work and will be happy with that 2.5% annual raise. "Cool" kids put on their kneepads and do the actual work and drain their bosses balls for the actual prize, the promotion. This is the reality. If you're in a corporate ladder type environment and you're not cool with this, leave now!
