I think a lot of people mistake "will survive" with "perfectly fine." You can keep fish in cups and bowls, with no heaters or filters, they'll survive, but their life will suck and they'll die young. "The pet store said I only need this cup because bettas breathe from the surface." I facepalm almost daily in this hobby.

"One of our teachers ate bark..." Honestly, that sounds like a plus for a biology teacher. I have good memories of high school Biology class, since I had a teacher who was fairly passionate about it and Biology is the only one of the "hard sciences" that I find genuinely interesting. The subject which I consistently had the worst teachers in was History, including a college World History professor who straight up presented Evangelical conspiracy theories as historical fact. Oh, the joys of growing up in the American South.

Oh my God you’re so right about the bio teachers. They’re clueless. My 8th grade teacher didn’t know anything. She said that toucans could change the color of their feathers, and bacteria can produce spores. Even the dombest kids in my class knew that wasn’t true. Another great episode of FTR

Fair enough! I will admit I did try to look up the toucan one because frankly weirder things have happened. But I got nothin. Couldn’t even confirm a seasonal change of any sort. @@b.w.5828 Yeah, part of that is the textbook’s fault. It literally said that toucans change the color of their feathers to blend in. It’s a teacher’s job to teach only true facts, so she could’ve at least fact checked it. The bacteria one’s on her though, she made that up all by herself.

@doreendehaan2187 they can get some oxygen through their skin as long as they stay wet (their gills kind of stick together out of water and become much less useful), but most fish aren't adapted to survive that way long term. I imagine it's like using a little straw as a snorkel, you're still alive but it just sucks.

just to make my case for biology teachers. so mine knows nothing about fish, but she doesn’t keep any either, so I think that’s okay. when she taught us the nitrogen cycle, I suddenly shouted "that’s why fish need a filter!" before quickly going "sorry, couldn’t resist." she didn’t get upset at me for interrupting, instead she admitted "well I don’t know much about fish, it’s okay," and actually let me talk for a bit. I managed to get "a filter is needed for the build up of beneficial bacteria, to do all that ammonia to nitrite to nitrate stuff" to my class.

One thing I remember best was how he showed us pictures from every national park (he visited them all) and there was a glacier with a rope fence sign that warned about falling ice in one he said "without fail, people die at this location every year and purge the gene pool of stupidity, "survival of the fittest" will be on the test."

The only logical reason i can think of for someone to dump the fish out of water and let them flop to the water would be that because they have such a mass number, it allows them to single out the dead/ dying ones. The ones that are good to go get to the water, all they have to do is pick up the ones that didnt get there. Also: I had a biology teacher in like 8th grade and one of the kids was playing games and disrupting the class with it, and she threw the kid's laptop across the room and it broke. Idk if she ended up paying for the damages or not, but she was kinda crazy like that sometimes. She rode a motorcycle to school, so that was nice. XD

When i first went to college, I went in as an education major, as i wanted to teach art and biology. Once i saw I'd be taking tons of classes on education and related topics, and basically no biology or art classes, i changed my major. Teachers don't know the subjects they teach because they arent inherently required to. They only need to know how to teach a subject, and unfortunately our education system seems to think regurgitating information off a PowerPoint slide is more than sufficient, no legitimate understanding of the topics you teach is needed. I have learned more from jobs, volunteering, books, and KZfaq than I ever did or ever can in a classroom setting.

Totally get what you mean about biology teachers. Some of them really don't know much about animals. I dealt with a guinea pig who had bumblefoot as a result of a bio teacher keeping him in a wire-bottomed cage. GP keepers KNOW that's a no-no, so a bio teacher should have known that before she included him in her classroom menagerie.

As someone who wants to become a biology teacher, I really hope that I can change the reputation of biology as a discipline 😭 Btw I have 2 aquariums that aren't sad little bowls, I actively try to educate people, including my peers about fish abuse, and encourage them to improve their aquariums. Additionally, I'm so sorry that your biology experience was like that, I hope the next generation of biology teachers (including myself) can raise the bar.

My biology teacher liked mushrooms. He even had some ergot mushrooms , that produced LSD (he didn't use it tho).

there is a clear difference between knowledge and experience, because anyone with patience could learn to keep an aquarium healthy from try and error , but learning about fish keeping without doing it before hand is bad too so its best to have both knowledge and experience so do a lot of research minimum 4 hours before getting a new fish species then learn from your mistakes over time building up experience

I wonder if the gourami was in QT? Still think that tank is too small, even for QT, but the tank it's in, doesn't look like it's actually scaped, maybe a picture background instead. Tank looks completely bare... Maybe even a salt or med dip? 🤷‍♀️

Even I know about pythons. Fortunately had a very good biology teacher in college. The thing sucked about his class was that he didn't create his own exams his student who is majoring in biology did so nothing ever sounded or seemed like what it was in the book. To academic. I had to pray through that class and take it twice. Still remember what I learned

So true most biology teachers have no clue about the subject. My high school teacher tried to convince me that dolphins are fish because the live in water....

those fish in the first minute of the video is climbing perch or anabas testudineus (from my point of view) they can live on land for 3-5 days, I have 19 of them as pet and they are so tough even outside of water.

I found a tank on KZfaq clips, posted it on ftr on petscord. It was a small tank, probably less than 10 gals, and a young arowana in it. Barely enough room for it to turn around.

7:18 this tank is a way to small for all these fish. The little Basses need at least 112 liters and the little catfish must live in groups with at least 7

Walking catfish can go days without water, they do it in the wild all the time it is causing no harm to the fish and honestly it's no different to what they'd do in the wild except obviously not in a pool lmao
