Im a middle aged career switcher( former healthcare worker) , and former part time sub, Now I will teach spanish 1 to 9th graders ( provisional teaching lisence). Im excited and a little anxious too. My dept chair is meeting with me whenever I want now during the summer, and Im going to start to set up my room tomorrow. We can be at the school anytime now, so im taking advantage of it. We're gonna go over the curriculum, and all of my questions too in the next 3 weeks before new teacher workweek starts.The school, my dept chair, and my mentor are extemely supportive which helps me feel more at ease! Lets do this !!!! :)

I took a break from teaching and I'm now back and better than ever!! :) I appreciate these tips. I honestly feel like whether you are new or seasoned, you can benefit from these.

I’m having the hardest time finding a teaching job. I am a first year teacher and it’s just been rejection after rejection for a teaching job. 😞

It’s really annoying since educators are underpaid (so all of this will be on your own dime and time), but the best thing you can do for your health in this job is get a head start. As much as you can do before you NEED to do it, the better. I encourage having at least a 2 week head start- this ensures that you always have 2 weeks worth of stuff prepared, you can impress students because when you speak you know exactly what coming up and when (it’s shocking to me that kids get excited by that - I guess most teachers fly by the seat of their pants?), and if you need to take time off, you can because everything is already prepped (this made me the envy of everyone when they would ask me why I always looked so relaxed). This also gives you time to forge relationships with staff and students. You cant exactly bond with a kid while working on tomorrow’s lesson. Get it done early. Do not wait for it to be needed.

Yea my problem is I'm starting my first teaching job on maternity leave, brand new school, brand new county 😳 not to mention I've never done student teaching sooooo I essentially feel screwed. Excited, but extremely overwhelmed already 😢

How long will there be a long term sub before you start your job? Also, once you start, or preferably before, find a local mentor!

@jimjones9900 I'm not sure yet. It depends when I have the baby and how long the county gives me for maternity leave. Thanks! I'm not gonna lie it'll be hard to find a mentor being so new but I'm going to try!

Im kinda worried about teaching and feel so so nervous about it. My program didnt have me student teach and i feel like i dont know how to lecture or actually TEACH what i know! (7th grade social studies)

Good news- first year is a nightmare no matter how much training or prep you do. Just get the experience, learn what works and what doesn’t, and believe in yourself
