Hemp has very strong fibers (stronger than cotton) and was used to make clothes in the past) P.s. particularly considering that in Ukraine cotton plant is not growing, so clothing was made using linen plants, hemp plant etc)

As for hemp: it used to be much more popular than cotton, people made everything out of it, all kinds of clothes, blankets, and so on. Now we are getting this tradition back. Hemp got negative reputation in the 70's, when Ukraine was occupied by the soviet union. A massive destruction of hemp fields and gardens began. As my mum told me, hemp was never an issue in their family garden, it grew like grass, but later, after the 70's, it was suddenly considered as a drug. Anyway, when Kate mentions planting hemp, she doesn’t mean it for smoking. She mentions 'sorochechky priala', which is 'made a shirt' out of it :)
