Technician class hams can also operate VHF weak signal! SSB/CW/narrow band data modes on 6m and up! If you have space for a beam antenna on the roof or tower get on 6 and 2 SSB! Both are popular(2m depends on what art of the country) and if weather conditions cooperate you can make 1,000+ mile contacts on 2m SSB. Even during "flat" band conditions 2m SSB will let you work out 100+ miles on a daily basis. I rag chew with guys down around Sioux Falls most every night on 2m SSB (144.200) at a distance of 120 miles!

Hi, I just got my technician class this week. I have a UV 5 R and (not registered on the DB yet) I am just trying to be prepared on what to do when I first get registered. I don't know how to read to the interface on the radio (I understand that you are keying up the frequency) but what is the upper number versus the lower number?

I so frustrated. I got my ticket in August. I scan all my local repeaters. I think I have talked to 2 people. The local net every night, is the only interaction I have . So frustrated

So a video explaining what to do once you get your license would be great if you actually explained what channels to search on and show an example of trying to search on those channels. Can’t find anybody’s beginner video that actually shows this. All they say is get on your radio and start talking. Where do we even begin? Do I just jump on some frequency between 146 and 148? What exact frequencies do you start trying to communicate on?

I hope you appreciate that channels on vhf/uhf radios where activists exists is entirely local. If I told you where to go in SoCal. It’s only going to help a tiny population of people. Monitor 146.530. That is a good place to start.

Ok, nothing against preppers... honestly I think they mostly have it right, but that’s just not my interest... pretty much any kind of deep dive I do on ham ends up in prepper territory... is there any other community regularly active on the ham bands? I’m about a week away from getting my tech license (passing practice tests regularly, now just waiting for the test). Anyways, my interests go more to the outdoor / hiking communications... am I missing out on these people? I’ve come across the SOTA and POTA groups, and that’s about right, but man, I’ll be damned if most of those aren’t preppers too... am I wrong?
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse 4 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of peppers on VHF/UHF. And you are right, the next biggest is POTA & SOTA. The best piece of advice I can mention is think about upgrading to general. That broadens the horizons a lot and I’d say peppers are there, but not the majority. Of course, preppers on VHF/UHF likely has more to do with your location than anything else. Find some repeaters that work with you can enjoy!

my neighbor just got turned down for his extra rating and may loose his his ticket to be a ham. Why? He had to answer the new qual. gguestion. About having a record. God god what has that got to do with being a ham? He is 70 and the offense happen when he was 19. Perfect citizen since he was released. The b.s. they want from him is crazy.

hoshnasi ARRL/ qualification question. Pretty much says if at anytime you where a felon you are out of luck. The amount of paperwork they want reads like a college dissertation. My question is why bring this up now when the hobby needs new people and needs to keep the ones who built it?

The team said they were told to turn away people who had answered the question yes unless they had all the paperwork required as stated in the new rule in hand and ready to turn in.
