- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

I have a feeling I needed to be right in Frankfort to get the slag. I met a woman on the beach who told me that there were not good rocks in Frankfort and that everyone comes to the lighthouse to rock hunt. Afterwards, I talked to someone else from the area who told me that I got some bad information.

@@MichiganRocks speaking of colors we wanted (wife & I) wanted to explain something we said in recent pass concerning pink pudding stone..., So you I believe corrected me from a rock or puddingstone we thought you were seeking that was pink, however you said it was a petoskey pink stone you were seeking. Anyways have you seen pink puddingstones, or is there supposed to be pink puddingstones.? The reason we ask is after your comment about what we thought was for pink puddingstones..., We found one that certainly is a salmon pink.., it doesn't have many red jasper pieces their smaller but the rings of stones around the rock are varied in colors but the main stone is like we said pink. It is approximately the size of a softball.. question is ..are there pink puddingstones..? Thanks and lastly we believe the stone we found at an oil field gravel pit is going to be gorgeous once it's polished well.., problem for us is we don't have a way to polish it ourselves right now. If you would be up for it we would love to pay you to polish it and return it. We would pay for everything of course. Consider it please.., and in closing we just wanted you to know we were not weirdos lol and that we actually found a (2 now) pink puddingstone. Sincerely'N'TRUTH d'Anthony and Tina Looman
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 жыл бұрын
I have found pinkish puddingstones, I think. My neighbor Sam, who has been in some of my videos found a red conglomerate rock recently that's in the tumbler now. It's also about softball sized. It's not a puddingstone, but is a conglomerate as a puddingstone is. I don't tumble many rocks for other people. I do some occasionally, but it's really difficult to keep someone else's rocks separate from my rocks. My next door neighbor just brought me one that I threw in today. I took several pictures of it first and I'm still worried that I'll lose it. I wish there was a better way to keep track of rocks, but since each rock spends as much time as is necessary, instead of all the rocks in a batch getting done at the same time, it's hard to do. I never thought you two were weirdos, so don't worry about that.

There are tons of Frankfort Green Stone in Fife Lake Michigan, and alongside the railroad tracks. The ones in Fife Lake Michigan are beautiful turquoise color. The ones in Traverse City are dark green.

@@MichiganRocks Oh yes - last time I was back we traveled from Twin Cities to Stockholm, down the Mississippi to La Crosse, up to Tomahawk, Herbster, Munising and over to my favourite spot, Gran Marais (always loath to mention it as I don't want it over-run with visitors, same as Mackinaw Island!!) Then we went to Houghton & Hancock, stayed up at Copper Harbor, which is smashing, then across to Bayfield, Cornucopia, Porcupine Mt & back to Mall of America, before heading out to Oregon & CA! I can't believe the road trips I used to do, now I can barely get into the car or walk unaided, bit of a shock to be honest - which is why I enjoy your lake trips so much, I lived in MI for almost 7-years and still think the Great Lakes is hugely underrated, especially in the fall... Nice drone photography of the lighthouse fly by. Something new in your arsenal of movie making? Noticed one stone you picked up looked very similar to the camouflage design on your glove. Hope you kept that one. At Christmas Cove I found a Frankfort Green stone. Bit of a disappointment as green stones go. Here is universal truth, and a trick that works for me. If you're trying to find something, look for something else than you will find what you are really looking for. Sounds crazy? Maybe, but occasionally that loony Zen philosophy works for me. You're looking more professional all time. Hollywood here you come.

Unless you live on the water or visit the same beach often, I think it's hard to understand just how much the beach changes from year to year or even after a good storm. I have gone to beaches that are sandy one time, and the next time I go, they're covered in rocks. Last year, the water was really high and while some people were losing their lawns along a beach I go to, there was one spot where the beach had gotten about fifty feet wider. Water is a powerful force that moves a lot of rock and sand around. With sand, wind is also a huge factor.

Yes, I always leave a lot behind. I don't really collect rocks just to collect them (except for agates and maybe a few other exceptions). I bring rocks home to do something with them. I either tumble them or cut them up and make something out of them. Otherwise, they just set in boxes in my basement. I'd rather leave them for someone else.

Learned something new, silicated. I bring home the fossils I find that are sparkly like that. I also bring home quartz. I'll have to go through it all and see if any cold water agates are hiding in with them. I was up at Whitefish Point recently and brought home a rock similar to one you showed. It's brown banded material around a plain grey core. It intrigued me.

Ha Ha, I told you we had agates in Lake Michigan. Nice find. We drove up to Michigan Wednesday. I wish I knew you were coming over to my neighborhood we could have gotten together for lunch or something. I’m at a little town called Wellston about 20 east of Manistee on M-55. Nice drone shots. What were the things in the water radiating out from the break wall. Did you notice any distinct difference between the Lake Michigan beach rocks and the Lake Huron beach rocks ? And just wondering, did the shards of glass do any damage to your tumbler barrels?
@MichiganRocks

You did tell me, now I found one too. That was a thrill. I'm not sure what the purpose of that whole structure below the lighthouse was. There were also concrete blocks sticking out of the concrete. I'm not sure what the purpose of those were either. There's not a big difference between Lake Michigan rocks and Lake Huron rocks as far as I can see. The glass didn't do any damage to my barrel as far as I could tell.

I see you had an epic day in a spot my wife and I go to as well!. You had me grinning from ear to ear when you picked up the agate. Between my wife and I,and another local rock hound,we find cold water agates pretty much every time we go out. I won't disclose the locations on here,but I'll share them with you on a side note. Some are as big as baseballs even. It's has almost gotten to the point that we don't even pick them up anymore unless they are of top shelf quality because we have so many, kind of like you and your Petoskey stones. I'm glad you got out to ol' bestie there, that spot has never failed to produce some good finds. Sorry you missed out on the greens, that spot is so over hunted by tourists it's hard to find any green there. Try some other locations that are not main stream in that area and surrounding, you WILL find some, they are there!!..they are just a little more elusive than the blues. Thanks for sharing the video, it looks like it has changed quite a bit since our last stop there about a year ago.

I wasn't at all upset about not finding Frankfort Green, just surprised. I came away thinking that it might not be found on this beach, but rather closer to Frankfort. It's nice to know that it is possible to find it at Point Betsie. I was not expecting to find that agate. Would you call that one a cold water agate? There seems to be some debate here as to whether it was a cold water or Lake Superior agate that got carried farther than most by a glacier. Do you find them with such good banding as that one I found?
@manisteerocks7092
@manisteerocks7092 3 жыл бұрын
@@MichiganRocks yes,..I just never really heard them called cold waters,rather waterline agate,or just banded agate. You would be really surprised what you find on this side of the state along the beach. Glacier push really hauled some material down. I've even found picasso jasper before. Now, finding a lake superior agate down here is about as likely as finding a Petoskey in grand marais. That being said, more than likely the agate you found is just a good ol'fashioned waterline agate. Some places they are very small and scarce. Others,if you're lucky and know what beach to hunt,..you can find BIG ones,..slabable ones. They make for great cabs!
