Backyard stone fire pit I made in about 2 hours. The fire ring uses rock I collected from the woods around my house.

From the research I've gathered and asking my rock collector neighbor, the best rocks to use for a fire pit are 'hard' rocks. Granite, Marble, Slate. Don't use 'soft' rocks. That is, rocks that when rubbed together start to shed material: Limestone, Sandstone, Pumice. Don't use rocks that have been in water

Love this! I’ve got a stack of large river stone that was for a project for “one day” but this looks like a great and easy one to do!

Year later here like but hey.. The dude rightfully says some stones are not suitable for this. River stone being one of them (see his description).

Nice pit glad you mentioned not to use certain rocks, With my soil and this time of year If I dug down I would end up with a rock circle pond. Most of my rocks are shale/slate > They will thermally spall/spit chunks of stone if overheated (know this from experience)

Ready to start firepit #2 I have to use limestone as it is so common in my region. Lovely granite like yours is scarce here, but limestone rocks still works if they are thickly, stacked correctly with tight seems and good balance. Limestone has many shapes and face cuts if from a prior dig or dumped randomly from a building site. It requires presorting and a knack for 3D puzzles. I arrange rocks by shape in groupings on the ground, base, cube, triangular, and flat cap Balance wise use the largest rocks at the bottom, irregular rounded bottom, and better flat vertices facing outward. Little rocks I call jammers to fill in irregular gaps A few sticks of colored chalk to mark roocs with is also a must.

I'm looking to build a SAFE way to build a fire pit. We had a forest fire in our backyard because the fire we built on dirt like the one in this video actually burned the roots of some trees and the fire surfaced spreading in all directions. You absolutely need some barrier of protection to avoid any kind of underground fire like that. I know it sounds crazy because we all know that fire needs oxygen to burn, but I'm telling you that the fire travelled through the roots underground. Crazy scary since we thought we had put the fire out.

Just make sure there are no roots by digging down far enough and then adding the dirt back then add sand

Hay Eric. We placed 2 rocks in the pit and put a grate on them after the fire died down so the coals were under the grate. It works great as you can add wood around the grate and cook your burgers or such!

I prefer burying the pit a little bit under the surface, two layers of rock under and one above the surface, so the soil wont fall into the pit from the sides.

Do you think the rocks will stay in place? Do they help spread heat around the fire pit circumference, or are they just for containment?
