In 2019 Disney+ and AppleTV+ launched to compete with Netflix, PrimeVideo and Hulu in what would be known as the "Streaming Wars". The following years we'd get HBO Max, Paramount+ and Peacock joining them, but years later and it's now looking clear who lost this war... us the consumers.
The constant price increase, the splitting of catalogues, the cancellations of shows and even new password sharing restrictions are just some of the drawbacks we've experienced from this competition. But there's much more to it than that as streaming services shift their focus from market share to profits in this stagnant market that once looked lucrative.

I consider myself a winner thanks to the streaming wars. I found that since I can't watch many of the big hits when they are newly released, I lose interest in watching them at all. Since I can't watch everything I want to watch, I have come to realize that it is not that important to watch the shows that I can. As a result of the streaming wars, I now watch far less TV, I read more and I do other activities more. So I'm really the winner.

And it´s actually really hard to keep up with what is being released. Some shows I discover years after their first release. There is simply too much content, which wouldn´t be a problem if most of it were good quality. But like you said, most ain´t worth torrenting. I myself find torrenting older content more and more. @@MrPrankmastergeneral Except there is no expectation of infinite growth. And that is not the core fundamentals of Capitalism. The fact that all those streaming platform hit a wall of loses is part of capitalism. Because profits and losses are both incentives that make a business profitable or not. People invested in steaming because it was really profitable. They invested too much and have to cut back. They took a risk and will be punished for making a wrong decision with their investment. No one that actually understand economies believe there is such a thing as infinite growth. Its called economy and diseconomies of scales. There is a limit to growth which is why in a free market, monopolies cannot exist. It was so profitable because people bought the services which brought investments and now every company is struggling to see what is the best way to offer this service. Amazon probably has it best by adding so many services with their bundle. Unless you argue for monopolies and think only Netflix should exist.

It's not cable. People never changed from a broadcast/cable mentality. No one is obligated to pay month over month to wait for a new series, episode, or movie. They choose to do this. Simply cancel a subscription for a few months then subscribe again when it benefits you to watch the new content.

Cable was WAY worse. It takes like 5 seconds to cancel or re-sign up for a streaming service and I can have that streaming service on any device I want. Even when I am out of town. I don’t have to call the cable company to install anything and if I cancel, I don’t have to haul installed equipment back in order to not be charged for it. Even if you got cable, each additional TV in your home usually came at a cost. Because you had to run a signal box to each separate TV (maybe it changed since the years since I abandoned cable, but proably not). Adding or subtracting channels were all controlled by your cable provider and it was an annoying process to adjust your package. Also, it wasn’t on demand. You watched what the channel aired in the timeslot it airred it for the most part. There probably will be a flux in streaming services over the coming years. Some will stick and others will fade away or combine. But streaming is still better then cable by miles. Even with ads.

@@TheDawnofVanlife Adding to cable being worse. You don't have a choice of your cable TV provider. They have been omniopolies for decades where there is only 1 provider for your area so they don't compete. You take what they offer or you do without. And naturally all of their package tiers come with 50 sport channels which most of us don't care about but have to pay for because those who want the pickle ball world championship won't pay what it would cost to license it. @Delta-Tech yes the cable companies are also most of our ISPs which are able to screw us over because once again most of us have no choice in provider.

Up until 2001, when they switched from analog to digital in the NYC tri-state area, I rarely watched network or cable/satelite tv. PBS (public broadcasting) channels like 13, 21, 25, and 31 had loads of programs and documentaries (many from the BBC) that my family had watched since I was a kid. Silent films, '30s Film Noir, Foreign films, European New Wave, 70s New Hollywood, experimental and cultural documentaries, BBC comedies and drama, live performances- as an adult I literally had no reason or interest to watch mainstream television and I still remember that bitter day I had to buy a digital flatscreen and throw out my tube tv set (if you still owned one). Well, ironically, I use the internet to watch the same (public domain) content I used to watch on PBS.

Viewers may have lost the streaming wars but the cable companies brought this on themselves. Realistically the end result described in the video is what we had been waiting for, an ala carte plan. In the early 90s our cable company stated they were working towards an ala carte plan where we could package groups of channels or select specific channels. This was the plan as customers were complaining about having so many channels they never watched. The only channels that ever agreed to this were WGN and WTBS. As years passed and this never happened (and these two were quietly added back into the standard package) it came out the channels refused to go along. Some channels viewership was so low that it came out if they were available only by customer choice subscriptions would be so low they would have to close. It's unlikely the end result will come to much of a savings but it is a little closer to what we wanted.

Foxtel was a huge thing here in Australia, but they still refuse to change. Started out good, little to no ads and great content cycled through. Now it's full of as many ads as normal tv, costs a fortune, and is only available on one tv. How it's still going is beyond me, i'm guessing mine sites and hotels that still use it for their rooms. Hell they even had a monopoly on football showing it live while normal tv had a delay, but now theres a mix of who shows it live first and you can get most games live on free tv.

Regarding "only last 1 season," maybe the strategy there should be "design it for only 1 season." There are plenty of ideas that only need 10-20 episodes to tell their story, and that is preferable to "we really need 50 episodes to tell our story, but can't guarantee that it will happen," or "we only had 20 episodes in mind, your request for another 50 is just going to be seasonal rot."

Most if not all streaming services do their customers an enormous disfavor. They fail to provide a COMPLETE, UP TO DATE list off all content available. How am I supposed to make an informed decision of what to watch when I don't know what is available? Sure, I can search for content, but that assumes I know what I want and I'm looking to see if they have it. They also need to learn about and use this thing called the alphabet. I'm tired of streaming services displaying content lists in random order. It should ALWAYS be sorted alphabetically or have an option of how I want the content list to be sorted.

The "informed decision" they want you to do is to watch what they present you, and if you watch it long enough, they'll present similar things. They don't expect the mainstream audience to do a deep research before watching something. It's all about promoting what it's already successful.

The library in my home office hadn't been touched in a while, even by me, so this was a great surprise. My eldest daughter just read "Benchley" by D. Preston and now she is moving on to the book that inspired it...Jaws. We still watch TV, but the instant and uninterrupted gratification is no longer driving us to just mindlessly watch the screen ad nauseam.

The way to go is physical media, especially 4k quality-wise. I've seen 4ks go down to $10 on holiday sales like cyber monday so they're not always expensive. You own the film you like, don't need to worry about it ever being removed from a service & especially don't need to worry about censorship/editing. It's only a one-time payment instead of an entire year or parts of a year. Hope more people understand the importance of physical media.

Rotating streaming services is a great strategy, but honestly, not being able to see shows soon after they release kills all the hype. There was something exciting and special about going to the cinema and watching a movie everyone was watching at the time. Or waiting for a new episode of TV to drop each week and if you missed it you wouldn't be able to join the conversation with your friends the next day. Streaming has already made it so more people watch content alone, but if we can't even watch shows when they are hot we completely loose the social component of this type of entertainment. It will be even less appealing than it is now, at least for me

The issue with streaming is, in 2 or 3 months, you can binge your favorite shows and start diving into the more crappy shows to where you just simply get bored or burnt out of content. Its an issue with too much content, to little relation to at least my pallete for shows and movies. I haven't had a streaming service for a good year and a half or more and honestly I don't even really need the background noise for it anymore. I haven't had regular tv in over 5 years, so its just one of those things to where television at least for me is loosing its appeal. Id rather pay for an interactive environment or game more so than a television situation. As a avid anime fan in the 2010s, anime certainly went through this problem way before the streaming wars. Piracy was honestly the only option to go to, to watch your favorite anime. Crunchyroll only had a limited catalog, most likely trying to keep the "free" model. Due to the multiple streaming services having limited catalogs, piracy grew and the anime industry was struggling. I was scared about Sony absorbing all legal streaming services for anime couple years ago, but it might save the industry having all the anime in one place. Though, Sony threw away the "free" model that CR had so the service can now pick up more anime. It is a wonder that companies did not look at what happened to the anime industry and learn from it but i guess they just fell right into the trap.

Note that once upon a time, Netflix released every episode of a series all at once--the "binging model," as we came to call it. But services like Disney Plus couldn't do this because, well, they only had a couple of shows, so they had to resort to the archaic TV model of dribbling out an episode per week. Then, for some reason, social media geniuses decided this was a brilliant creative stratagem instead of an admission of weakness, and now it's dangerously close to becoming the norm.

Great detail video. Thanks. As a screenwriter, I am aware of nother issue that is about to cause an industry shut down in the US with the TV and film writers strike. Writing for cable and network there was a chance of making a living because they made so many episodes writers could count on having year-round employment on shows that lasted over 20 episodes. Now, very few streaming shows last more than 10 episodes at the most. Because they cost so much, they disappear for a year to 18 months before another batch shows up. Ironically, there are more shows but far fewer episodes of them. This adds up too much less work for writers despite the fact there seems to be more television with over 500 scripted shows last year. The other thing that streaming has done is wipe out the syndication market. Screenwriters get royalties on international sales and re-broadcasting of their work. Not unlike, a musician getting royalties based on the plays of their songs on various platforms. When streamers make a series they own world rights. there is no secondary market for TV produced for streamers. Therefore, far fewer royalties for writers and everyone else. Yes, we get a very small percentage for digital royalties, but it does not compensate for the rollback of income in every other area.

Releasing movies into a cinema and then farming it out to streamers in a manner which maximised profits, before moving onto physical media, was still a viable strategy for movies. The issue was the studios were obsessed with streaming subs. The studio's destroyed their standard movie model in order to use those movies to boost subs. That strategy was a disaster and is currently being reversed by many studios. But for streaming, I agree the main focus is tv-shows, but apart from Netflix this is not giving anyone any profits.

I don't understand why Everyone does not even mention this. You can watch anything you want, when you want from the titles from a streaming service, and you only have so many hours to watch them, so just watch everything you want to watch from one service at a time, cancel, then switch to another service. Subscribing to multiple does not give you more hours in a day

I think the future will go back to licensing and advertising since it’s easier to metric. Streaming will only get more streamlined as time goes on. Not sure how sustainable the current model for pricing is and I would suspect many would eventually promote an ads only option for payment. This is my prediction.

I grew up in the 80s in a household where nobody believed in cable. As an adult, I couldn't wait to get it, to see everything I'd missed. Turns out, it wasn't much. I subscribe to Hulu Live during college football season and then cancel it. Since I already have an Amazon Prime account, I make do with the shows I can find there and KZfaq fills in all the gaps. I've found that I'm generally happier and more productive the more I have the TV turned off.

Agree ... Amazon seems to be the only real winner, because you subscribe to Prime not for the streaming services, but for the free shipping service, and the streaming services are an added bonus. The video creator did not mention IPTV... the true winner for the future.

The part about KZfaq filling the gaps describes my modern day viewing experience. KZfaq is like my very own fine-tuned version of Cable. I'm subscribed to over 200 channels because they've produced content I've liked in the past. And if they change, if they don't produce content I like anymore, I can simply unsubscribe and move on with my day. I don't have to pout about losing money when I have my AdBlocker on and never directly give them money regardless. KZfaq provides endless amounts of content for me to watch. It has everything except for straight-up unedited copyrighted movies and tv shows being uploaded. I would include porn and gore too, but if you search hard enough and look up the right terms you will find that shit lmao

The biggest lose for us is there's just waaay too much content out there now. And 97% of it I have no interest in, either cause the story/tone/art direction doesn't interest me or I know that in the end I'll watch an entire season of a new Disney+ show, for instance, and feel like my time was completely wasted. I'm not the kind of person who likes to try new stuff on a whim. I want my time spent on entertainment to count. I miss the days of network TV where we only had a few channels and there were a bunch of fun shows that was solid entertainment. I'll refrain from listing shows, but I remember watching a TON of TV as a kid/teenager. Even PBS had programming that I had to catch every day/week! Now a days, I mostly watch reruns of old sitcoms and watch movies when I find they're free on Prime, normally. I will churn streaming services sometimes, but ultimately I don't like spending money on them. Amazon Prime is an exception because of all the other perks I get with it. I rather purchase and own a movie/show indefinitely than to be at the mercy of a streaming service keeping it around.

The beauty of Netflix is that it replaced the video store, that was a one stop shop. The addition of original shows was cool, and again replicated HBO and Showtime. Now though, it's too much and I don't maintain subscriptions. If I really feel like it's a month where I will consume media, like around the holidays or vacation, I'll choose one with the most media I want to watch and pay for that subscription for one month and cancel. I'm not going to spend $60+ a month maintaining a ton of subscription services.

What do you recommend for people that just want to watch local sports? As a person from Michigan, I just want to watch local sporting events. Tigers and Wings are on Bally (who just filed for bankruptcy), so you gotta have cable or stream online. Lions are on Fox until they’re not. Then you need KZfaq, peacock, or whatever else. UofM football will be on Fox, Big 10 network or TBA. For me, the cheapest option seems to be that I should sign up for a streaming service only when they’re carrying one of my games, then make sure to cancel them the day after.

Not so sure I miss the cinema, you were lucky if it was empty so you could sit in the middle with enough arm room. The people talking through the movie, the guy in the back throwing popcorn, when you're in the back the sound is way too loud and you don't see anything. If you sit in the front, you will be dead of neck pain within 10 minutes and probably not visible again in the coming week. While the other way is to enjoy a movie on the couch while having everything you could ever want at hand.
