Oddly enough, the year before my last trip to the UK, I was in Australia, but the only joke about their convict past I made was when I noticed that jaywalking seemed to be a national pastime there and I slapped my forehead and declared to the people around me, “Of course you don’t obey the laws, you’re all descended from criminals!” I didn’t get any laughs, but I wasn’t attacked either. I did get a few chuckles when airport security pointed out I couldn’t take my Swiss Army knife with me and in my best Crocodile Dundee proclaimed “That’s not a knoife! “It’s more of a can opener!” They let me recall my checked baggage and I still have it to this day. Incidentally, a year later, at Buckingham Palace I almost lost it again because it has a locking blade. I didn’t know they were illegal in most places in Europe. The sergeant let me keep it on the promise that I put it in my luggage and keep it there for the rest of my trip. As a joke, I purchased some towels from the gift shop, and when I gave them to my mother, I told her I stole them from the Queen as a consequence of palace security detaining me because of my knife.
