It is indeed a miracle and a a refreshing gift of the nature to see the tender light green shoots of the fresh crops of the paddy early in the morning when u wake up! How merciful, loving and caring our Mother Nature is! I sense and feel that these fresh buds of flowers & shoots of tender leaves bathed in the early morning sun rays are eagerly waving at me to come and say hello to them. I suddenly saw a glimpse of vibrant ruby red Cherry guavas dressed in their best color hanging in the guvava trees and these red guavas smiling brightly like grandmothers bright smile when she get a brand new cloth as a gift. All I can see is like a green cloth with ruby red flowers in it, the green guvava tree branches are heavily laden with the ruby red jewels as if they are waiting for someone to come and pick them! In Sri Lanka cherry guava is called "Jam Guava"(Jaam Peera), as the name talks, its mainly used to make delicious jam as these seasonal fruit trees get laden with such large number of guvavas in their season. So rather than letting them rot under the trees people pick large quantities and preserve them by making jam.
As natures recycling process when cherry guvava (Strawberry guava) get ripen, they turn ruby red and fall on to the ground. Before they fall on to the earth, I decided to pick fresh fruits from the trees and make a delicious jam. The essence of our Mother Nature has given an irresistible sweet and sour flavor to this fruits though their pips are very hard. The best is to strain the jam mixture through a metal strainer after cooking them as the small pips can be easily separated from the creamy velvety textured jam mixture!
Meanwhile I made a tasty jelly out of the China moss which I got down from Negombo through uncle Siriwardena. Such a sweet dear uncle as he is always willing to help me! Without wasting the rest of the cherry guvava, I decided to make a yum dessert as well by mixing black grapes with guava . A perfect match made in heaven! First I mixed sugar and hot water to make sugary syrup and then I soaked orange zest and lime leaves to get that sour zing to the water. Then I pierced the cherry guvavas by using a lime thorn and let the fruits soaked in that sugar syrup for few hours..That’s how I mixed those sugar syrup soaked fruits with the moss jelly.
My friends I wish you were here to taste my mouth watering jelly pudding as the taste was heavenly because of the sweet taste of the water of a coconut mixed together with the lime, orange and the sugar. Obviously this is not a traditional Sri Lankan dessert but It gives me such pleasure to make new delicious dishes to my beloved grandmother and my loving Brother. Dear Friends don’t forget to add a bit of Palm treacle to make the dessert an unforgettable treat. Luckily I used the best and fresh palm treacle that I brought last week from my Aunty’s place in Nawalapitiya.
My older aunty had sent me a massage early in the morning with a loving request to make something yummy for their pilgrimage that they are planning to go early in the next day morning! How can I refuse my loving Auntys request? So quickly made a baked a dessert by using what ever the ingredients that I had at home and went there and gave it to her, as it’s so fulfilling to make others happy. I made a crumble mixture by mixing palm jaggery with rice flakes(habala pethi), chopped cashew nuts and flour and spread a layer from my cherry guvava jam in the top and baked it. Actually I never expected such beautiful color and a mouthwatering taste at all. So well done Me!!! Of course my friends my little brothers long face told me that the two pieces that he had was not enough for him. But what to do as it was for my aunty’s pilgrimage. Later on another day I will make for him so that he can have the whole thing to him self. Yes that’s my foodie little brother!
Love you All!
