---- READ THIS ---- If you enjoyed this video go check out another Marcina video about how to work with the shield breaker: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipiCoqt2zta0dJ8.html This is the pinned comment where I post some corrections, post-video comments and whatever stuff I said I'd add - Not really an error, but something I should've mentioned: Side-B angled down also does the most shield damage and pokes shields, on top of doing the most damage (added by JJP_Arxys) OTHER USES FOR DB1 - Jab-locks in platforms. DB1 lets you catch missed techs in platforms without needing to land in the platform yourself (suggested by Kendukin) If you have any more ideas or comments reply to this comment and I might add it to this one :]

I have found that DB1 not as a follow up but as an anti air can be a very good combo starter. It's so quick that almost always if you catch your opponent jumping they will panick and buffer whatever they were about to do, that being airdoge so they land with lag or an aerial which doesn't come out in time and land with lag leaving enough time for you to actually sneak a nair 1. In my experience works 95% of the time and would like to see more Lucina players giving it a try. I say Lucina cause in my experience this doesn't work with Marth at all, maybe the move it's just to weak. Obviously reacting to the nair 1/up air actually landing is important as well. And also awesome video!!
@yourlocalraccoondealer8611
@yourlocalraccoondealer8611 Жыл бұрын
@@benja637 That's true, but it also means most players will just buffer spamming nair or fair and hit you back for using DB1 on them. This is the common issue with people who use it as a neutral tool too often.

DB1 is also amazing for mixing up your opponent that is in disadvantage, and can set up for a Dair spike. DB1 into Dair is obviously not true, but many characters have no real options after being hit by DB1 off-stage, and often can only hope to make it back with their basic recovery move or a jump. After being hit by DB1 off-stage, they're usually in a prime position to get spiked by Dair, and it tends to trade successfully or just outright win. In cases where your opponent is already out of resources, there's no real point in going for it, outside of coming out faster than Fair and Bair and having a more forgiving hitbox than Nair.
@lazyyfox7914

One thing to note is you can get around the stage spike mixup by pressing both shield and up-b at the same time. Since specials have more buffer priority than airdodge, you'll get tech if you hit the stage, but up-b when hitstun ends.

This is a "combo" originating from Smash 4. It still wasn't true, but it had a slightly narrower window of escape if I remember correctly. In general though, the combo was rising db1, Nair 1, jab, fsmash/ftilt. (jab into basically anything was true in smash 4. Good times.) The most typical purpose, instead of linking jab into a finisher, was getting just a little extra percent to assure that fsmash/ftilt would kill. It's always been one of those strings that you only throw out if you think you can catch your opponent flat footed. Edit: if you were going for the risky and very not true loop, you'd go DB1, Nair 1, jab, then go back into db1 again. The jab was the key difference that made it less bad in 4, because your opponent isn't just standing in front of you for several frames while you're trying to jump into db1 again.

I found a cool 0 death using DB up. It's 100% a string, but it's very viable. I landed it on several Elite Smash players, but it's extremely situational. Nair -> full DB(Up) -> [Opponent lands on platform and rolls AWAY] -> [jump after them] Uair (tipper) -> F-Smash (tipper). Watch as they DIE if they aren't heavy weights. Even works on tiny characters.

Not quite using DB 1 but my practice partner started getting good at not reflexively teching the sideb, so I started mixing in DB 2 and a Fair afterwards, since this is another 50-50 after the first one to catch them off guard again. This is somewhat less applicable since you likely need a jump to make it back from either of these, but you're usually running off and immediately doing this anyway so you commonly have a jump. I'm not sure exactly how negative on hit DB 1 is, so there may be a gap for the opponent to offensively retaliate if you go for a move like fair afterwards (usually hits opponents frame 7 unless they're above you); but regardless this is a tactic I use commonly vs characters that like to ride the stage

Good video. This is actually a very old school Brawl combo (You know when Marth had a frame 4 f-air); Even in Smash 4 it had its occasional use due to DB coming out several frames faster than as of now. SO back then they were good; and even now, using it to catch an opponent with DB1 to soft hit up-air to f-smash with Marth is good, even even DB1 to n-air when they're getting up from ledge, since you can do n-air to d-air as I've done since launch of Ultimate. More of these options discussed in the video have been done in melee and brawl, but I appreciate you for bringing them out because a lot of Marcina mains think they only have text book options with these characters. Extra fact, due to DB1 range, and the speed of N-air most character can't really air-dodge out without hitting landing with lag, which sets them up for n-air (1). Nor can they throw out options fast enough to counteract n-air; so if you do use that string, use it once as a mix up...don't repeat it, as you have to step forward to keep it going which you opponent can directional air dodge away. Marth will find more use if using n-air at ledge as he can confirm the n-air into d-air since his sour spots line them up better than Lucina's high knock back. If they air dodge up, charge a smash attack; they can't air dodge past you without you reacting, so they have to eat the hit or air dodge off stage....which means they're DEAD :D

Ive been using rising side b 1 to nair for a long time as an approach, I woulnd't really repeat it multiple times but 2 attacks in a single rising shorthop is extremely powerful and tricky, you can also approach with rising side b and finish the side b if they catch on. It also lets me get away with rising regular aerials in some situations because it makes them scared of multiple attacks. Basically don't repeat the string multiple times and its a great option!

Yeah dude, of course it's not true but boy does it look clean as hell and I'm still going to go for it in bracket if I have a big lead, LOL. It's so satisfying when you do hit it, especially when you carry the opponent across the stage. I also like to foxtrot forward and end it with upsmash for style points. Using side B1 to try and bait the opponent into teching when they don't need to was something that I thought I discovered on my own, as I've never seen anyone do it and it's very effective online especially where reaction times suffer. Finally at mid to high % run off bd1 into both hits of Nair will kill very reliably. If you manage to get the first hit of db in this scenario, Ive found that you will hit both hits of nair and kill consistently. Nice video, Liked and subscribed.

A useful window that works with Marth because ofe the tipper is buffed DB1, Up air and after that start a huge juggle, it always works, no matter if the opponent airdodges c:, it's very safe And at high percentages if misstech sweet spot dtilt to Pvt canceled ftilt is a great option, or even sour spot dtilt to uptilt it's a great confirm, both of these only work for Marth c: In the corner, use DB1, DB2, BDUP3, wait for an airdodge, read and punish with a spaced fsmash or a upsmash, this works better with Lucina c:

Nicely done video, i have a question regarding use of short hop DB1: It's a nice tool for neutral and advantage extension, and nair 1 isnt a good exit out of it, but what would you personally consider as a follow up from it? Usually I'd use up air since marcina up air to back air is a true confirm and marth up air to tipper f smash is juicy. Yes, nothing is really true from that, but just like Chroy (mostly chrom) do with it, it can catch jumps OOS or out of disadvantage, forcing a jab on them into a confirm. It's not a spammable, tool but it's a useful one nonetheless i've been using for many years now for landing mixups (DB1 to up air/fair landing) and general movement for spacing. So, given that i'm a PR level player but i pocket marcina nowadays and am looking to develop them further, what would you recommend out of a DB1 from shorthop? Thanks in advance :)

@@kitsumuri9278 Ah, therein lies the issue. I don't use it much at low percents since that is the obvious follow up and there are better options. It's more common around percentages that DB combo will no longer connect in full (for hit) and if you try to do it you'll get punished for it. That's why im asking. Regardless, you're right in saying that at low percents that the full combo is probably just best to go for (angled up for juggling and habit scouting purposes).

DB1 to nair 1 is only good on opponents who are very slightly ungrounded, like they were falling from a short hop or something. Most aerials don't have good enough frame data to engage by the time they touch the ground which leads most characters to attempt to buffering a jab, and unless your ZSS or something, that usually gets you doodoo'd on by the nair one. But any player who knows about this can just buffer their shield attempting to airdodge in which case mixups are born, like airdodge wavelanding out of DB1 instead of going for the nair 1 strong followup. Works even at high level play. - I guy who did it to Nairo.

yeah, actually, they do the same damage, the animation may be different but only the last angled hit deals different damage. So, angling it for more damage as far as I know isn’t a thing, BUT a big big thing I do is, when I’m angling it forward to kill, angling specifically DB3 down and the rest of the move forward (like pressing side b and going forward, forward, down, forward) makes it so it’s easier for the four hits to connect. Sometimes DB3F pushes off your opponent a little too much, so if you’re using it to kill, angle the third hit down

Sometimes you can condition someone with the full dancing blade and if you notice they shield the full thing you can just do db1 into shieldbreaker. Pretty scary cause shield is like the best way to deal with dancing blade. Some players will react right away though cause it takes some time for db1 to end which is why the conditioning is important.

I'm pretty sure the only reason this string exists is because people used to do it in smash 4 but with marth and lucina's superior jab after landing nair 1. You could combo into anything because it popped people upwards so it was a half decent option to go for to catch the opponent off gaurd. It would go Jab 1, short hop buffered side b, land with nair one into jab 1 again. Since their jab sucks in ultimate this is the best they can do and so the string sucks a lot more.

you didn’t mention any data at all. i’d love to know how unsafe landing nair1 into rising db1 is. how negative is it exactly?

It could catch them off guard the first time but only in the air near the ground and space well, which is why it's not viable.

just because it isn't a true combo doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. I got plenty of cool back air tricks as pichu but it isn't a true combo. still works

To be clear, you can option select walltech. It’s not so much a mixup as it is a gimmick, because if the opponent just reacts to you hitting them, regardless of it being up b or back air or side b, they can time it so either they tech or they stay still, avoiding accidental airdodge sds

Without trying yet. But it looks like you are prone to footstool if you try DB1 off stage to an opponent. As in they can footstool you and take advantage of Lucina or Marths lag from DB1.

I’ll never forget the day I saw Leo use DB1 off stage to force an air dodge from his opponent because they thought they’d have to tech. Stolen IMMEDIATELY xD

With respect to Leo, I've been doing that since 2011 in Brawl, along with my buddy Pugwest and I know Mr.E use to do that to back on Brawl ladder matches, if anything we got it melee Ken and MewtwoKing, but then Mr.R and MikeHaze used it too; so it's been around for some time. Just a nerdy Smash history lesson from ATARi :P good luck fam

Just mash a fast option when they do the rising side b1 and are trying to follow up with nair 1. You will get the move out before the nair 1 if it’s a fast enough option. I play lucina and I could be mashing up-b to get out of the fake combo
@aann

fair, but i mean, you escape it just like you'd escape any other combo, so I didn't feel like it would be as important to mention. thanks for the feedback though :]

@@aann if they neutral airdodge (which is most likely) I think they still get hit because they have endlag when they land.

If you're going to say it isn't true over and over again, at least show a definitive escape route. The combo counter in this game IIRC isn't exactly the end-all-be-all for if a combo is true or not. Can they jump out?

As someone who exclusively uses Lucina and Marth in my tournament brackets I thought I could give some advice on how I use DB and Nair 1 Nair in general is a great tool, it’s amazing at air-to-air and catching people jumping in neutral, it can be used to edge guard etc. more specifically Nair 1 has a helpful use that maybe people don’t know. I like to use Nair 1 to mixup on shield pressure. Let me explain. Nair is insanely safe on sheild being -4/-3 as well as you being able to space it really well. My typical way to play offense in neutral is slowly get closer to my opponent safely, and when I get an opportunity I shorthop fastfal Nair, so only Nair 1 hits their shield. This leads into many good sheild pressure options because after that you are virtually untouchable due to how well you can space the move as well as being -4. After Nair 1 the pressure tree extends like this. Nair 1 > dash grab or Nair 1 > F tilt. Or Nair 1 > don’t faatfall and let Nair 2 hit > dash back. Nair 1 > shorthop drift back fair You get the point now, it’s crazy safe and mixups are Infinite. DB is pretty standard tho. It’s prob your best mid punish option in neutral. It’s as simple as: they whiff an aerial in front of you > DB. It’s the fastest most damaging option , or you can down tilt if you’re confident in you’re tech chasing skills
