I really appreciate your videos. Please keep them up over the winter. I need to find ways to keep busy indoors when it rains here in Wales, and outdoors on the rare occasion it doesn't. Gardening in the winter is the main way I keep my mental health sound.

Good to know I'm not the only one that gets giddy about trying a new plant 😄 Top of my fall to-do list is installing a bat box next to my garden - the mosquitoes are out of hand this year in our area!

It is still hot in central Alabama, making seed germination difficult. I haven't had any luck getting Brunswick, or Hilton Cabbage to sprout, and it is past my window for sowing them, but I might try again in a few days anyhow. I sowed seeds for Danvers carrots last week, and am waiting for signs of germination. On the positive side, my pepper plants are producing, and giving me weekly harvests. I have turnips that are ready to harvest, and will be sowing a succession crop next Wednesday when the temperature is forecasted to be a bit cooler. My seedlings for kohlrabi, Pak Choi, Komatsuna, and Yellow Heart Winter Choy are doing well. A volunteer Super Sweet 100 cherry tomato has started producing, and so far, seven of eight comfrey root sections have sprouted. I am waiting on late season tomato seeds to sprout for a winter experiment. Lastly, I have Elephant Garlic, and grocery store mystery garlic cloves that I will plant next week. Happy Gardening!

Interesting about the oyster plant. I bought some seeds this year and tried growing them in late winter but no luck! I’ll give it another go. And yes, they really do taste like oysters! I nibbled a leaf in my local nursery.

Fantastic video, I'll have to go see if there are some oyster leaf near me, I'm in coastal Scotland! One thing that would be interesting is a series in seed saving. F1 hybrids are strong but you always need to buy them... I'm a heritage variety fan myself

Here by us, we have to grow onions in autumn through winter as they do not like too much water. Salad onions we can grow almost all year round. Planted direct arugula and iceberg seeds in a cardboard box and spring onions as well in a cardboard box ….. I’ll put all 3 boxes inside another box to keep warm…. Being in middle ga we still get warm days here but night time temps will drop soon..40-50 at night …. I did this last yr and it works out great…. Lettuces for months and the bugs had no idea lol….. thx for your videos…… end of month will start broccoli and kale in the raised bed…… right now radish n garlic cloves I just planted….. radish will b ready for harvest in a wk or so…. Thank you , Ben for another inspiring and informative video ! I live in SE Oregon with a challenging growing area . We’ve already had some freezing temps at night . Our daytime to nighttime fluctuations are pretty extreme throughput the year . Usually a 40 + degree drop . I struggle with knowing how to adapt to our climate , from the information I receive from people with normal temperatures and seasons . But I keep working on it , season after season !!!

Hi, Ben! This old lady has been starting Fall brassicas here in the N. Florida Panhandle. I'm trying to grow enough to last until next year, so I start mine in the 162 cell Proptek trays. The broccoli and cauliflower are about 1" tall right now, and I'll be starting some cabbages, kale, collards and lettuces tomorrow. I also started some short-day onions to plant out in mid-November to over-Winter. Those I started 338 cell Proptek trays. These trays are expensive, but well worth the price, as I've had 5 of them since 2017, and they'll still be okay to use for 5 or 6 more years at least! Fall/Winter gardens are tricky here, but well worth the effort. I'll soon direct seed peas, snow peas, carrots and turnips, too.

Thanks for another great video, Ben, I had good success using the old window pane method to get carrots to germinate after my previous attempt failed, I just put it directly on-top of the soil and removed once they popped up, gonna do that again next year, good luck with the oysters 😁👍🏻

I always overwinter my garden bi yearly. Adding a lot of bio mass and carbon to refresh it. Topping it with straw, wood chips, dried leaves and fresh grass clippings. If I'm not doing that, it's garlic and green onion time. Sometimes hardy flowers for the bees. As always, appreciate the wisdom.

This year I have a terrible infestation of gray plant lice. It is pretty much sucking the life out of my two kale beds. I’ve done a little research but not convinced how to solve this. I'm growing a vegetable I've never heard of this year called salsify, it's like a parsnip but with leaves more like a leek and it supposedly has an oyster flavour too. I'll find out when I come to harvest them in October 😊

Great info. I have never attempted to grow spring onions over winter. Here in S.W.Indiana USA, winters are pretty unpredictable. They have become milder in the last 20 years,but still have deep freezing times. I think I will try it this year. My Dad had 2-3 cold frames when we were growing up. He framed and hinged the windows so when he opened them for air flow he didn’t have to worry about them sliding off. I have been intending to build one like that…. Need to get off my duff and do it. Hello there! GREAT info! Thx so much again. It's been some time since I posted here but I'd mentioned some time ago that I've moved from a small allotment I started last year to a much bigger one this year. I've not much time to be TRULY gardening as I'm once again laying the groundwork for the new garden. That said I'd planted some crops that actually need the winter to continue growing but where they're planted will be all renovated for the new garden in the coming month or two. SO - I've got to once again seed my califlower for example. You show in this vlog how to do that this time of year. Maybe dumb question but I'm still rather new to all of this - if I start my plants from seed now, you mention that they should be ready in the early spring to put in the ground. I'd think they'd be already TOO big to wait that long but I presume because it's much cooler that they grow slower so thus are more or less the right size next spring. Correct? Thx so much for a comment/ answer. 👍👋

It’s staying so warm this fall I think many of us are missing a growing opportunity in the US. I seen a recent post that Montana is already 2 weeks past first frost date. So simple to create a mini cold-frame how you showed. I think I will need to grow lettuce in cold frame and peas as the baby rabbits seem to know when I have them planted. I need to finish bottom of fencing with chicken wire.🙄. There seems to be no time we don’t have bunnies. Our neighbor who just visited his vacant lot asked me why I don’t have a large greenhouse and that I could be growing cucumbers. He apparently loves cucumbers and not much else. I do have cucumbers still growing and I’m just waiting for seed from those and the crisper is full. It’s just too hot here in this microclimate to mess with growing inside a greenhouse. A small high tunnel would be nice for green peppers though for the fall as that’s when they don’t have enough time and they are doing well till the all too soon frost hits them. For me my lean to greenhouse works perfectly for how I use it. It’s small enough to reasonably heat to start seedlings. Next year I will start all but onions much later as it just doesn’t pay to have anything else planted too soon as I’ve learned you can miss a lot of pest pressure by late planting. I would like to add a heat sink and new polycarbonate panels. In the late summer I use shade cloth over it and cure root crops. 😂we recently had another friend comment on do we ever stop gardening 😂 as our garden is still producing carrots, rutabagas, beets, green beans, tomatoes, peppers and kale among others. I guess I don’t understand as we go as long as we can. Most of the root crops I’m waiting for cooler weather along with the squash as a light frost gives better flavor and we may store some root crops in ground and some in our new experimental root cellar. We can only preserve and eat so much at a time that I see no need in having a large greenhouse (mine is just a tad smaller than yours). Just like the example you showed of how small an area lettuce or onions take and how much you will get especially in succession plantings, so really no need to have a large area. I’m trying a couple areas that are vacant with cover crops this year because of all the hype about it. Was given some pea/oats and buckwheat and all are doing well. Thanks for all you do! Yippeee! Have to tell you how excited we were to learn that the bees arrived back to our neighbor’s vacant lot hives!!! I just said we seen a few honeybees about 3 weeks ago and he told us they came back👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. He lost them two years in a row and they didn’t dare well over winter by putting the hives in garage. I said I hope you just leave them outside this year and he said Yes!👏🏼👏🏼. He made sure they had plenty of food going into winter and I think they will stay now👏🏼👏🏼😃

Great video, with straight to the point information. My one-time experience with this same green manure mix (from the same supplier) was not good - very poor germination, seemingly not worth it. It was just one try with new seed, though. Not to be defeated, I tried buckwheat (from the same supplier) this year, and germination and growth rate were outstanding. About 6 inches tall now, I'll let the elements do the rest. All I need now is better luck with a nitrogen fixer, maybe crimson clover? Thank you for your video.

I’m always confused when it comes to winter brassicas in relation to crop rotation. Do you plant them in the current years bed. Or do you plan for next years. I only have room for 1 bed of each plant type. Great videos always enjoy them.

Could I sow clover as a cover crop at this time of year?

I've grown salsify (aka vegetable oyster) for years. Leaves are more like a leek. It has a cousin, Scorzonera (aka Black salsify or black oyster plant) which is more probably a close cousin of a flower (daisy? not sure, need to check) whose leaves look altogether different - and actually more like what you were showing. I suspect that the plant you were discussing is an altogether different plant (seed does NOT look the same). Salsify seed is long and thin and rather large and takes FOREVER to germinate (about 30 days). Scorzonera tends to look more like some flower seeds - rather chunky and short - but again very visible and also seems to take 30 days (or longer) to germinate. If planting either of them - plant radishes to mark the row(s)

It would be nice to know what zones you are planting in. I never know if what you are doing is even close to possible in northern Colorado.

Oyster plant (oyster leaf in North America) germinates irregularly, and the plant is particularly attractive to snails, just so you know. My understanding is, this plant does well in containers, theoretically to thwart snails or slugs. Snails and slugs where I live aren't all that easily thwarted, I wish you good success with your Mertensia maritima.

My spring onions have survived winter here in New Zealand but I planted as young plants. All my onions, red, white and leeks and spring onions all looked like spring onions with no bulb. Now Spring is here, will they develop more?
