Product Sourcing:
When it comes to sourcing a product for review, I will usually either purchase and item personally or reach out to a supplier requesting a sample for review. Many suppliers are supportive if they are confident in their product, appreciating the value of greater exposure.
I am sometimes sent a product by a supplier which I may include if the product fits planned content and I believe will be of interest to you, my audience. The product needs to be worthy of a review and I always make it clear to the supplier that they cannot influence or be involved in the content in any way. It is not in my interest to review inferior or poor quality products and therefore as you might expect many product offers are politely declined.
Any sponsored videos (paid for reviews) are clearly stated as such so there can be no misunderstanding.
Sometimes a supplier will provide a link to the product or the supplier which I am happy to include in the description. Sometimes I will be provided with an affiliate link so I can earn a commission on sales and this helps to support channel costs but never at the expense of an honest review. There is no cost to you and in some cases discounts can be obtained via the link or via an included code.
If a product I have reviewed is available from Amazon I will often include an Amazon link in the description. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you purchase a product or service with the links that I provide I may receive a small commission. There is no additional charge to you.
Replying to Comments:
I really appreciate the feedback in the comments - I find it a source of knowledge and inspiration - so thank you to all of you who take the time to contribute. This is not just for me as the creator, it is a valuable source of information for all readers of the comments. I have recently found that if I continue to respond to all the comments as the number of videos builds, it takes significant time away from being able to produce new content which would be very counter productive! So my aim is to read everything I can and reply when I can, after each video goes live for the first few hours at least, and beyond that when possible. I'll see how that works out 😊

Thank you for supporting the channel.

It’s always a bit of a puzzle finding the right pouch for a particular need and that’s the excuse I have for having a variety of pouches lying around. I tend to buy them on sale knowing that they’ll come in handy at some point. A very useful part of this review is the Maxpedition size comparison at the start - I can never remember which size is which. I’m a fan of that blaze orange interior too - it’s surprising how much easier it is to find things on a bright background. Good review Jon, thanks.

always a puzzle... I ended up with an extra pouch that I just had to put something in couldn't leave it laying around empty, got turned into a survival kit, not an EDC it was the OneTigris Dragon Snail 2, with the map insert instead of a map it got a mini-first-aid kit settled on the OneTigris Blade for EDC As Jon said you rally need a dedicated first-aid kit for travels

For el-cheepo alternatives, small digital camera pouches are useful for packing and carrying a few items in the pocket. There are lots on the web. Not the same standard as the above, but useful just the same. Thanks for the enjoyable and informative vids.

What I like about this channel the most is, unlike so many others, not being told "you need this" or "you must have that" etc. Yes, we all have different wants and needs. I change pouches and content according to where I'm going. I've just added a spanker elite small tool pouch to the ever increasing collection 😂 The wynex admin/medic pouch is also excellent value and useful. Just in my opinion!

Seeing the differences between these pouches makes it much easier to understand why you prefer the Maxpedition. While their smaller models are perfect for your purposes, I'll need one of the slightly larger Maxpeditions. Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble of switching all that stuff into the different pouches. It was the deciding factor for me.

A few months ago I gave in to the my primal need of organizing stuff in packs, and got into pouches. First was a tool pouch with a generic Chinese pouch, then an EDC pouch with Alpaka Hub Pouch, and lately a tech pouch with Evergoods' CAP2L. The CAP2L is incredible and I am pretty sure that you would also love it if you need something like it.

I never saw the benefit of pouches until I started getting into EDC and they are so useful to keep things organised, especially if you switch between different bags or just need something to grab and go and of course having multiple kits. I actually use the small sized pouches for my pockets, got some from Osprey, one being in red, which is almost perfect for a personal first aid kit.

The thing about pouches is that different pouches meet different needs. I like how you transferred the contents of your kit into different pouches for comparison and obviously the Maxpedition was the best fit. However, I have put together a “take along office” kit using the Alpaka pouch you showed and it fits the need perfectly (in a way none of my Maxpedition pouches can). So, like another commenter, I keep a variety of pouches on hand (different sizes and layouts) so I can find the right one to fit my need when I’m putting together a new kit.

Great video. I appreciate your insight and research on these pouches. I have often bought gear without giving it much thought, but after having tried several pouches, I have to agree that the Maxpedition option is better than some of my previous choices and is one that I'm moving to. I have used pouches that do not lay flat, and it's not easy to see what is in it. Being able to see and find things quickly is important. I never thought that I could find inspiration in pouches, but you have managed to succeed in that!

I recently got the Alpaka Hub Pouch and Zip Pouch Pro. I always find these pouches are just a little too big for what I need (I try to get the most compact gear possible). The Hub pouch is smaller than the Maxpedition Mini pouch at 4.7" * 3.5". On one side it has two elasticated loops and three on the other so it's possible to get your gear to interlock. The Zip Pouch Pro is great if you want a combination of wallet and pouch.

I found that I combined items from your mini travel and your mini kit for hiking. I found that the items i picked fit in the Maxpedition mini but it was really full and the zipper kept getting caught on the Hydroblu filter. So all that being said I got a bigger Maxpedition pouch so it is not more or less like the shape of a football. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

Long time watcher, first time commenter. Have you ever tried the Maxpedition Neatfreak? I keep all my gear in it and throw it in my work backpack . Then if I'm heading out for lunch and don't want to take all my work gear or a big bag, I just grab the neatfreak out. I also pack the removable carry strap into the bag when not using it as a standalone bag. It's like a hybrid bag/pouch, absolutely loving it. Loving your work too.

Now that was an interesting exercise. My conclusion, as Jon pointed out in a previous video, keeping your space/weight within a particular limit (size of a Maxpedition Mini), makes for a systematic decision process of what’s necessary or not. I was amazed at how well the Maxpedition performed, even against larger pouches. Brilliant video Jon.

Another very informative video. I’ve accumulated a storage tub of pouches over the years as my needs and organizing skills have evolved. Where I am now is simple open layout pouches, with few, if any, loops or pockets. I find that just gives me so much more flexibility. I can use other small stand alone bags or pockets inside a larger pouch when necessary. This also gives me a degree of modularity. Like my repair kit and backup hygiene kit. I can carry these modular kits in my car kit normally, but easily transfer them to my carry-on for a flight. One use case for a very simple pouch is a Topo mini for EDC. I seldom carry a bag, so the Topo fits beautifully in one of the yoke pockets on my Vertx jeans or trousers.

There's a nice Maxpedition-inspired brand in Ukraine, called CaseIt. They're making their pouches in Kharkiv, with YKK zippers (even one zipper pocket inside in bigger model), Cordura fabric, and superb sewing. They have few unique design decisions and I don't like to call them a "Maxpedition copy", but a competitor 😁 For example, they place elasticated loops vertically on the right side (in bigger model), which helps placing bulkier items.

Difficult to find the best one, it is probably a personal choice depending how many items you want to carry and the way you want them displayed. I have the mini and it is a good starter for many different usage. It is a lot easier when they open flat, you are right.

Jon, first of all i love Your videos and Your approach to the topic! Ive became a maniac in terms of finding proper pouches for multiple purposes, my main EDC contains mostly tools and materials that i find useful in various situations. For me Helikon-Tex admin pouch worked the best since it has removable insert which is extremely clever and allows to have extended capacity of the pouch ( i would say that i can fit two times more items in the pouch than in standard maxpedition) without loosing ability to have everything organised, and in the known places. So please take a look on this helikon piece of gear, i think in term of bigger EDC pouch its product worth concideration! cheers!

I am a huge pouch fan. When I started using pouches I would buy a pouch and try to fit what I thought would fit and find out the pouch didn't work for that particular need. So I had to rethink my strategy...I started laying out the items; EDC, fire kit, FAK, etc., and find a pouch for them depending on the internal guts. It took several pouches but soon got very good at buying various pouches for my needs. My conclusion was Maxpedition, 5.11, and Vanquest. I store these pouches and grab them as to the type of situation. Each one is filled with the various items. They attach to the outside of my main pack(s) and free up the inside of the pack for larger items. I have also attached them to the carrier hanging on the back of the seat in my Jeep.

For me, the tactile feel of Vanquest pouches is preferred over Maxpedition. Every Alpaka pouch I've bought has ended up being too small/cramped for my gear and doesn't function well. I actually have a knock off version of a basic Maxpedition pouch that's used for work EDC storage and it's killer! I actually enjoy knowing it's cheap and only serving as utility. But that's a personal thing regarding how I feel using/abusing my gear. 👍 Thank you for the video run through. It was insightful, helpful, and entertaining!

Very nice to see what else is out there. I carry the Leatherman bit kit in the PAL’s webbing of the Vanquest PPM Slim which gives additional room inside. Though I appreciate the staggered slots of the Vanquest I resist the urge to fill every slot and look at them as optional positions. I’m trying to avoid the fill every space temptation which then leads me to buying a bigger pouch which I will then again fill. I try to fill a pouch which will lay flat in a cargo pocket rather than in a pile at the bottom. I have to be conscience of weight as well or I feel lopsided and get dirty looks from my chiropractor. I’m hoping to work my way down to a Maxpedition Micro but that may be too over ambitious of me.

I HIGHLY SUGGEST both of those brands. I also use Badlands Ox and 511 Rush 72 for outdoor trips, though the 511 gear is heavy despite being indestructable. On the strength of your previous review of the Maxpedition mini I bought one and keep a tubeless tyre repair kit in it on my motorcycle, there’s room for more stuff and easily stored on the bike.

Excellent job per your usual creative conversation style of content & when you are talking about a product that you like, safe to say that I'm not sure who would want to interrupt the Gadget Guy!!! The biggest problem I had was to keep track of most of my items , especially the times when I desperately needed them . Such a terrible feeling and I can't tell you how many times I've heard " did you find it " 🤬 until I lost my mind from living my life in auto pilot !!! Thankfully nowadays my simple mind has been trained , I met someone that had her life together and she showed me how to do the same....Eventually I was going to get my shit together 🦕 Make the bed , make your own meals & make routines . The clutter that I grew up with has been purged 🔥 Now the only thing that matters is the things that matter so I take care of them and I am sure glad to be able to see the items I'm going to be needing...Simple minds can be trained and I think it is deserving of a mention that I love my THULE pouches & packs that always have their place in my North Face Borealis 28 L backpack.

No surprise Vanquest did something similar as they were founded by ex Maxpedition guys. I have some Vanquest gear and it is superb quality. I'm also a big fan of 5.11 and I have a great small 5.11 pouch, but my favourite is my Maxpedition EDC which I use as a travel pouch. Superb quality, great design and looks, and affordable. Where pouches are concerned you can't beat Maxpedition.

Thank you Jon for a great overview. I've been carrying a Maxpedition micro pouch in my pocket for years and can speak to the cost efficiency of paying a bit more for something that will last much longer.

Another "vote" for the Micro. Being an old school Ranger, and retired peace officer, both professions often require one carries what they need. "Ounces became pounds" as time progresses. Now, in my 70's, I try to carry less, but found it was not smart with everything stuffed into many pockets. Thus, I use the Micro with convenience and confidence. A great little pouch that carries much.

I would love to see Maxpedition release a pouch with the size and organizational capabilities of the Beefy, but without the military inspired look. I love both of my Beefy pouches, but I'm not a fan of whipping them out of my backpack when I'm in public. They just look a little too goofy and "preppery" for my taste. With that being said, you can't beat them. They're without a doubt the best pouches I've used. Vanquest pouches are nice, but they aren't quite as nice in my opinion, and they're more expensive than their Maxpedition counterparts. The one advantage that the Vanquest pouches have over the Maxpedition pouches is the brightly colored interior. I think that was a smart decision on the part of Vanquest.

thing about Maxpedition is that you need to buy extra straps for MOLLE atachment I've also in the past had a mis-stitched Maxpedition Bag which soured me on that brand I currently use a OneTigris Blade, opens flat so far it is working well & holds quite a bit

I've got the Alpaka Utility Pouch and agree it's a little awkward but I use it for my design gear which works well. One thing I've noticed though and I need to get in touch with Alpaka about it is the elastic loses its elasticity over time, not great. Also inside the big pouch on the non zipped side there's a hidden pen loop which I discovered by accident.

FYI - I don't recommend the $30 - VIPERADE VE10 Tool Pouch, EDC Pocket Organizer. It does not hold anything of width and basically zips up into a ball. Very mileading considering all of the pockets inside and outside of the pouch - minimal flex.

I will always be a little puzzled by wanting to keep a flashlight on a Keychain, or in a pocket. (Also keeping a knife on your person.) I have them, just not necessarily on my person. I keep them in a bag/pouch, and/or at my desk (aka workspace). [I do have a small pen knife that I keep on my person, that does come in handy from time to time.]

Here's my dilemma with EDC packs. I see the packs, the various sizes, great reviews, etc. I see loads of stuff carried in, for instance, a Maxpedition Mini. I get said pack, can't fit as much stuff in it, and it's still way too stuffed and thick (and heavy/bouncy) to pocket carry, even in cargo pants. As much as I like the convenience of a singular grab-and-go bag, I'm coming to realize that distributing my carry around my pockets - while not as quick to load up when leaving the house - will work better.
Great Gear I tested on my travels
