Hi Shannon! Thank you so much for this video! I hope that a lot of people watch it cause understand the process of learn a new language makes everything works. I'm a college student to become a portuguese and english teacher, and one of things that I always wanted to say to everyone whos studing they own language or another one is exacly what you said: ENJOY THE PROCESS. Technally our brains only learn languages with positive memories (I don't know a better way to say that in english), so when you get stressful, sad, angry with yourself, you can think that you getting motivation to study but actually your brain will not learn anything. And if you learn something cause you need it (like a school test), you will probably forget it after you use it. So if someone are reading this comment: enjoy the process doing the thing that Shannon said, making fun with your mistakes and learning with them will give the best results in a long time process. Thank you again Shannon for be so smart and kind talking about this process, helping a lot of people ❤

Muchas gracias por hacer este video, soy de Mexico, he estudiado inglés durante 10 años en la escuela y jamás noté progreso, apenas y podía mantener una conversación básica. Hace casi un año comencé a estudiar inglés por mi cuenta, viendo videos, películas, escuchando música y leyendo libros infantiles. Por primera vez siento que estoy mejorando y este tipo de videos son muy motivadores, de hecho pude entender gran parte del video leer los subtítulos.

Hi there, great video :) I am French and I totally agree with the 3 points. I personally learned to speak english watching movies/tv show in the language I want to learn, I also learned by theme, like for a week I gather vocabulary on a topic and then create sentences with them and then use a specific time (past, present, future...) with this topic to create more complex texts and that works really well for me. I am currently trying to perfect my Spanish. As you mentioned really well, I agree that school is not the best place to learn a language at all. I have learned more using technics by myself and watching videos such as yours, reading books... than I ever did in 9 years or so of school. Definitely going to check out lingopie :)

Hi there, I'm French, currently living in Paris. I'm a language and literature teacher in English and my native language (French). For an assignment about language learning, one of my students used a video of yours and I found it very interesting. So I checked a few of your videos and found them very nice, entertaining, and truly instructive. I'm amazed by your many talents, but I have to say that it is mainly your gift with languages that make me write this comment (I very rarely comment on any video). Like you, I have a certain ease with languages. I speak French, English, Arabic, Spanish and a little of Modern Greek, but it's mostly due to the fact that I was exposed to these languages through friends and family. And I absolutely agree with you : the problem is not the person trying to learn. The problem lies with most of the teaching methods. And people who say they are bad at learning languages, it's simply because they don't enjoy the process. I just love that you said that because these sentences are just sentences and yet so true. And a lot of people don't seem to understand that this is what needs to be fixed in the educational system. In France, languages are usually not taught in a very enjoyable, fun way. The educational system has a set of rules as to how a subject should be taught and it's never really fun or engaging. Even some teachers get bored by their own subject. Therefore, many students in France struggle with learning languages prior to going to university (in university, professors usually make it much more interesting and fun as most of them are passionate about the material they teach). I currently teach online, for private schools in foreign countries with students from 18 to 30 years old, and I like to make my material and activities engaging, entertaining, challenging, and even playful for them. Because that's what I would have loved my classes to be like. I use a lot of videos, images, songs, and make sure that they have a great time during my class. My priority has always been to make my class a safe place where they can all be themselves, discuss and exchange about whatever we're working on, but also laugh about what we're working on. They're already stressing out about other classes, assignments, or even more private things--I don't want to give them more to stress about. I just want them to enjoy the time we spend together and to be able to then happily and easily use the language or culture or literature they've learned with me. This is what I used to do when I was teaching in the US, and I'm still in touch with a good number of my former students, even if we're an ocean away :) I'm sharing all this because I want to tell you that what you said in your video is very true. Plus, your methods are incredibly good! I, myself, have had almost all the same methods, and I agree that they work very well. Watching shows in a foreign language is something that I was introduced to when I was 15 and I still do it today in my late twenties. As you said, "holy crap!" This is amazing that you found a typo when reading Harry Potter in Spanish! It shows that you're really good. I've read them many times too (not as many as you, though haha) and once in Spanish, but never found any typo hah. Thank you for this brilliant video and for being generous enough to share with all of us, not only your thoughts about learning a foreign language but also your methods :) If you don't mind, I will use this video of yours, to encourage my students with their language learning, because as you nicely pointed out, "language learning is a valley and peak kind of journey." Hi Shannon! I'm from Malaysia. Apart from my mother tongue Tamil, since Grade 1 til Grade 11 we are taught English and our national language Bahasa Malaysia (Malay). I moved to India when in Grade 5 and was forced to learn to read and write in Tamil. We only spoke English and Tamil at home! It was my retired 2 aunts who gave us tuition to improve our Reading and Writing in Tamil after school. My siblings and I managed to good grades just after 3 months. Now, I'm interested to learn French ! Some of my cousins hv moved to France from India (since the 60s). I tried Duo Lingo before and wrote down the meaning of some words in English. Thanks for your encouragement! I hope to continue to learn or at least speak in good French sooner or later!! All the best to you too in your language skills!! Take care over there!♥️

Llevo años estudiando inglés y hasta el día de hoy sigo sintiendo que el inglés es mi mayor cruz, pero es verdad que sí uno se lo propone puede ir mejorando a su ritmo. El tiempo que estuve en la escuela me sentía con 0 confianza, encima por casi tuve que repetir bachillerato por culpa del inglés 😬. Tras finalizar bachillerato, estuve dos años en una académica de inglés con la que gracias a ella, empecé a sentirme más segura con mi inglés. Yo entiendo el inglés y también puedo mantener una conversación básica, pero no sé por qué que cuando tengo que hablarlo en público aún continuó sintiéndome insegura🙃supongo que será porque tiendo a compararme con los demás... ese es una de mis malas manías. Con todos esto, quería agradecerte por tus palabras. Gracias a tí, obtuve motivación para no darme por vencida con el aprendizaje del inglés y con los otros idiomas que me encantaría aprender, que son el francés, alemán y coreano. Yo en la escuela he estudiado desde que voy en primer año y llevo exactamente así casi 12 años en los cuales siempre nos enseñan literalmente lo mismo y jamás pasan de ahí, me es muy desesperante porque me gustaría que en primera enseñaran bien porque he aprendido muy poco y son muchos años y en segunda que tuvieran la paciencia porque hay maestros que no la tienen; te resumiré un poco esto pero todo mis maestros siempre llegaban y de la nada se iban y otra vez nos ponían a otro maestros y a comenzar nuevamente de 0 y siempre era lo mismo, en secundaria tuve maestros que literal nos decían si no entienden busquenlo en el traductor y te tipo 😐 y ahora en bachillerato hay unos que te enseñan pero su pronunciación es mala y a veces te llegan a confundir con las palabras y pues me es muy complicado aprender y en realidad amoooo el inglés, por mi cuenta he aprendido todo lo que se gracias a ti por todos tus consejos, a Duolingo, a un nuevo maestro que mis papás me consiguieron y es nativo de los angeles, así que yo sé que se puede solo que aveces es complicado, pero en verdad que gracias por hacer esto porque siempre nos das motivación para seguir adelante, nos das consejos que nadie más hace, transmites tu positivismo y eres muy buena personas en serio ❤️💮😊 gracias por existir shannon 🥺

Si te gusta el acento argentino y pudiste comprenderlo 🙃... te recomiendo otra serie cortita que está en KZfaq que se llama "tiempo libre" es de comedia de Martín Piroyanski un director y actor argentino, también tiene subido un cortometraje muy lindo que se llama " no me ama" tiene subtítulos en inglés. Y por último uno de los actores de "gorda" que se llama Santiago korovsky también tiene un canal.muy divertido es un director y humorista muy talentoso. Su ig también tiene aún más vídeos. También hay en KZfaq un cortometraje de Gustavo Taretto que se llama "medianeras" hay que buscar el vídeo que dura 28 min porque luego se hizo una película más larga para mi la primera versión es muy linda. Y por último también te recomiendo "wos" es un músico y freestyler argentino muy talentoso sobre todo para escribir y transmitir emociones, realmente sus letras no tienen desperdicio son arte puro ( difíciles, largas y las canta rápido) pero valen la pena, hay vídeos subtitulados para que sea más fácil seguirle la letra. Te recomiendo arrancar con los temas: * mira mamá * Andrómeda * contando ovejas * lleno de zafiros * live set Y hay muchas colaboraciones con otros artistas a mí me gusta mucho la canción "bolivia" donde está con el ensamble de percusión "la bomba del tiempo" de su papá y otra canción que su papá le hace a él que se llama "valentín" y está en el canal de Alejandro Oliva...Perdón por hacer tan extenso el mensaje es que a mí me encanta cuando me recomiendan cosas nuevas ja!!!! ¡Hola Shannon! Me encantan tus vídeos. Son muy útiles. Como profesora de Inglés ( de clases particulares),te diré que el sistema educativo en España con respecto a los idiomas es un desastre. Respecto al Inglés, tengo muchos alumnos con problemas , sobre todo de base. No conocen los tiempos verbales, y no los saben utilizar. Les cuesta muchísimo hablar, y la parte del Listening , ya ni te cuento..eso es un muro con el que chocan una y otra vez. La mayoría de mis alumnos son chicos y chicas que lo único que quieren es aprobar el inglés para poder pasar de curso, no disfrutan con su estudio ni con el conocimiento de otra cultura. Es una pena, la verdad. Aunque se estudian las cuatro destrezas, Reading, Listening, writing y Speaking, los alumnos no están motivados, y acaban el Instituto sin saber hablar ni escribir en inglés . En fin, creo que tu actitud para el aprendizaje es muy motivadora, y recomiendo tus vídeos a todos mis alumnos. Deseo que disfrutes de tu estancia en España, y que te estén tratando bien, que eres estupenda y te lo mereces. Un besazo 😘
