Tammy equates crying to weakness. This is why she instantly catches an attitude whenever Charlie expresses herself emotionally. As a young girl, Tammy didn’t have the permission to cry because of her hard upbringing. Her mom was on drugs, she lived in poverty, her dad was thrown in prison, etc. Deep down inside Tammy is still 15. But now that she has a daughter, she’s tryna groom Charlie into the person that she was which is bottling up her emotions and being “tough”. Whew! I honestly feel bad for Charlie because until Tammy can communicate without being combative, Charlie will never open up to her. Which ultimately will leave Charlie to seek validation elsewhere.

This is a very real problem in the black community especially as it pertains to black women. I blame this primarily on the Strong Black Woman trope that so many of us have bought into. Crying is not a sign of weakness, it’s an honest and normal reaction to so many of the things that we go through. My mom is a lot like Tammy in the sense that she’s very strong and believes that you should just “get over it”. I’m the complete opposite and growing up there were so many times that I felt like I couldn’t come to her about certain things because it wouldn’t be received well from her. Our kids needs to be assured from a young age that they are allowed to be vulnerable when necessary so that they can properly learn how to understand their feelings and communicate.

When Tammy said she doesn’t like when she knows Charlie is stronger then something and it makes her cry. Tammy sees it but Charlie doesn’t and that is where Tammy should take a step back and tell Charlie instead of yelling , she should just tell charlie that she is bigger than some situations and to never let someone control her emotions. I remember when I was Charlie’s age my mom and sister were so mean and i overheard them talking about me and I ran to my dad crying and he said “never let someone think they hurt your feelings “ Of course words hurt and people hurt you but you do not give people the satisfaction of letting them know that they hurt you because there is something so sadistic within people that makes them feel like , I made them cry I feel so empowered.

Tammy is literally sitting there telling her daughter that she doesn't like her emotions. Those are her emotions. That's how she feels inside and you're telling her that you don't like that… My 28-year-old self hurts for her and my 16 year old self. White people be Trippin but one thing they do get right is how they let their children express themselves. Their kids aren't scared to say how they're feeling inside. Charlie look like she worried about what's gonna happen after she leaves this therapy session. That bothers me.

If I'm sad or frustrated I will cry anywhere I am to release those emotions I can't hold on to that energy. The upside is I let go easily so although I may drop tears once I dry my eyes it's a new day. As far as people looking at me I never concerned myself with people's opinion because only God knows my heart only God's opinion of me matters.

TBH I believe that most that grew up with one or both parents on drugs or absent, groomed themselves to be strong. Not for recognition or a badge of honor, simply because that was the only choice. Mold or fold...many chose molding themselves into a warrior and that translates to others whom can’t relate as “He or she is too hard” or “recognizes crying as a weakness.” Tammy knows that it’s a hard cold world and without a doubt she will always be there but she wants her daughter to bundle up emotionally...you can’t let everything and everyone break you, period!

Why can’t Tammy not understand. Listen to understand! Stop already coming to a conclusion. Your daughter is a crier. You just stated you don’t want her to conform to society yet she’s her own person, why you tryna make her into this tough person without the softness! There’s always a balance in life! You can tell her crying is good, get it out your system but remember to always boss up in the end. This lack of emotions in our communities is just trauma passing from generation to generation. Relationships whether platonic or friendship are on the rocks cause everybody want to be tough! Can’t even show empathy to your own child is crazy to me. I wish them luck

As a parent, I use to be the same way with my child. I was always saying stop all that crying or get away from me until you get yourself together. I had to learn that it’s ok to cry and to express that emotion. I also had to learn that it’s not ok for me to shut my child down from crying. When I do that I am saying that you are not allowed to express yourself in that way. I hope Tammy listens to the therapist and to Charlie. I know where Tammy is coming from because it’s hard to see your kid hurt by someone else. We want to protect our kids for as long as we can, but we have to let them be who they are and go through some things so that they learn from it and become stronger.

The fact that they're in therapy talking about it is great because neither one of them is weak for not crying or crying about things. Two extreme versions learning to talk about things will make them more understanding of one another sometime along the road. The therapist needs to be a little creative with dealing with it though.

No two people are the same and it's not a single person's place to judge. We all have room for improvement and growth. Charlie is 15 years old, and her disposition with Tammy and Waka is disrespectful. She also talks in a way that shows lack of self-esteem. Charlie also needs to be a child, and stop trying to be grown too fast.

By Tammy telling her daughter to stop crying she isn't being sensitive to her daughter emotions. She should be happy that her daughter expresses when she hurt or when she happy. A lot of parents don't get that from their children!!children! A lot of children holds it in until it's too late...

I let my son cry cause kids need to be able to express what they are feeling. I will never say she’s a terrible parent cause Tammy loves her child. Charlie is her life but she is hard on her at the most inconvenient times. There’s a time to show tough love and there’s a time to show empathetic therapeutic love when your child is having an emotional moment. Teaching kids to suck it up is why kids will bottle everything up and bottle up mental health issues too then go do something crazy because they bottled up those emotions. There’s no book on parent hood but Tammy needs to listen to her daughter

Tammy loves her daughter but Tammy is like a lot of black mothers she's very tough and seems kinda heartless sometimes. A lot of black women have been through a lot growing up so they build up this toughness because they don't wanna seem weak. In the session with the therapist you can see Tammy is not taking it seriously and it seems like she doesn't really care. Her daughter is more sensitive and doesn't need to be treated like a baby but needs to be treated and spoken to like a teenager. Tammy speaks to her like an adult which makes the young teenage girl feel like Tammy doesn't care about her.

She was probably raised to be tough. I was raised to be tough and that's the reason I became the woman I am! I am raising my daughter to be strong also. Sometimes with kids if you allow them to think it's okay to make excuses as bout things they'll carry a victim mentality! I am not saying you can't cry about things or I don't ever break down but for the most part I am able to get through things! I was very vulnerable as a child and didn't know my worth! once I realized this I became wiser which, made me stronger mentally! Overall my upbringing played a big role in my ability to know how to push through!

It's okay to raise strong daughters, we got to show them affection also and allow them to show their vulnerable sensitive side and tears. It's okay to do that Mama's ❤️

If you are someone that doesn't cry alot or at all or feel like being emotional is a weakness then clearly behind all of that you know how it feels to have pent up anger to the point where you are losing your mind....why would you want someone else to feel like that? I was like that as a teen and when I hit my early adulthood all of my emotions just came out like a whirlwind...I didn't know how to handle them and neither could the people around me.

As much as I love Tammy, sis be quite and listen with your ears cause your baby needs you to just listen and be there . People need to understand when having kids they aren’t always going to be just like you. They are their own human as well with their own thought and feelings and as parents we have to accept and learn that .

Tammy was like that though. Didn’t she stay with wakka after he cheated on her multiple times? Isn’t that “dumbing yourself down?” She clearly lowered her standards to be with the “man she loves.” I hate when parents go around acting like “look at me and my perfect relationship, try and be like me and you will be fine.” Tammy you pulled guns out on wakka quit acting like your relationship is normal or healthy. It’s definitely been toxic before... quit judging when you’re the last person that should be giving this girl advice.

I don't know why but I understand Tammy's POV. I learned at a young age you couldn't be vulnerable around everybody and I just suppressed my emotions to the point where I was just numb mentally and emotionally. I am completely fine with people around me expressing their emotions and being vulnerable but its something I simply cannot allow my self to do.

Tammy equates crying to weakness. That’s sad. She needs to resolve that because that belief in itself is trauma being passed down to Charlie.

I think Tammy is an amazing mother but she needs to understand that she has provided a better life for her daughter, WHICH IS THE GOAL 🙌🏾, and her battles are not the same as when Tammy was 15 in BMore, which I can imagine was a completely different world that what her daughter knows. It’s ok for Charlie to cry. But I understand Tammy’s annoyance with it being over a GIRL and she’s ONLY 15. Any mother would freak out. She’s too young to be THAT emotionally invested. 15 IS NOT GROWN, and IS NOT old enough for a “relationship” IDC. When Charlie grows up, she will understand why her mother didn’t want her to cry over irrelevant shit. I understand Tammy. And I understand Charlie 🙏🏾❤️

They need to go seek therapy at Fix my life Iyanla Vanzant asap. Iyanla will get down to business and not sugar coat shit, Tammy need to get her bottled emotions out and be a better back bone for Charlie because Tammy has A LOT childhood trauma inside her that's making her be so hard Charlie, which is heartbreaking. Charlie needs to feel supported and uplifted and not told to basically shut up about her feelings. Parents stop passing your childhood trauma curse to your children, BREAK THAT CYCLE.
