Do they ever actually run the numbers on this? They basically say they need to earn like minimum 4K/month NET INCOME for a studio apartment for 1k/month if you’re lucky to find it at that price. I get why they say that but come on. Live in the real world

$50 an hour is a little high for an entry level bachelor's in psychology. That's $100k per year. Less than 10% of people in this country make that.

I don't think a bachelor's in psych qualifies you for much of anything, maybe not even $20/hr in related work.

I know retail store managers that make 70k/year and district retail managers that make 100k+ and neither require a degree. It's all about whether someone is able to move up into management which is where the big bucks are. Or where the real money is, is in being self employed.

If you're ambitious enough and move up in your career, even in retail you can make that salary. That's like a decade away for her though, she's not going to make $50/hour unless she becomes self employed or gets a higher education in psych. Psych is one of those areas where a degree doesn't get you much more than working in retail.

Numbers change with the times but the math outcome is still the same, wether your in 1962 and 2022 people will still choose to be broken in both time frames.

I earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. It was essentially worthless when applying to jobs. Don't study psych unless you are planning to get a master's or PhD, it is very difficult to get a good job with just a psyche degree.

Four years of having college professors blow smoke up your (you know what) and now she discovers that psych degree puts her on the same earnings level as someone stocking shelves. The good news is that she only incurred $13k in debt for that life lesson. Could have been worse. Much, much worse.

Right! 13k is not that bad of debt. However, I’ve never understood the draw to psych degrees and what it offers in the real world as far as jobs? She should have went to college for something in the medical field such as nursing or X-ray technology that has jobs everywhere and she’d be hired right out of school.

Shes going to need to work 2 jobs and acquire a skillset on the side so she can increase her pay down the line. She can't afford her own apartment she needs roommates for now so that 1500/month rent turns into maybe $800 a month. If she can bring home $250 - $300 extra a week shes in good shape.

I don’t know if she qualifies, but the military would get her out of town and solve the housing issue. With a bachelor’s degree, she could go in as an officer.

Most people don’t earn $50 an hour. Nurses, cops, etc don’t count. Very specialized.

Working 80 hours per week is not normal. We should all be able to afford a place to stay working 40 hours per week, no matter what the job or pay is.

@Prey R Ideally 40 hours would be sufficient. But we live in the real world, and making that a reality would involve taking from people who did a better job preparing to earn a living. Kind of like taking points from the A student and giving them to the D student so everyone who showed up could pass.

I was where she's at . Living at home with abusive people. I knew I had to change course. Stopped working towards a 4 year degree, went to community College and got a degree in Radiography/xray tech, and have done well since then. Just kept slowly increasing my skills, letting jobs pay for my school as I increased education, eventually getting a bachelor degree paid for by the hospital I worked at. Find a niche area you like decently enough, and find out what you need to do to get there. General degrees are worthless.

@@essenta7589 Considering it's been a year and no response, probably their grades were subpar. Considering they said "have done well since then", but didn't say they got a job in that fiend of study, I'm going to say they got a good paying job in some other type of job.

Where I live, it is no longer possible to rent some place for only 25% of my take home pay. Unless you want to live in a dangerous neighborhood, maybe renting a room.

She’s five years into adulthood, done with college, no kids, not married. What’s keeping her from having two jobs or at least one plus something part time that gets her foot in the door with good potential of greater income later? Go forth and do great things!

I worked 70hours a week throughout all of my 20's. It was hard but if you find jobs where you like your coworkers it's almost like you get a bit of socializing through work too. I don't know if it's good to work that much for prolonged periods of time but I lived in a city with the same rent as her and didn't have a choice. My income just wasn't high enough in my 20's.

Yep worked 60 hrs a week most of my 20s, and 90 hrs a short time in the period, AND part time job in the Air Force Reserve. It was a blur because I was sleep deprived a lot of it, but away from my family and free.

It’s hard to be on your own especially starting off n having a debt already. It will take awhile to get to where she wants herself to be. I’ve been with my company for 12 years now n started 15$ as a janitor. Kinda sucks oh well. Just stuck to it n now making 34-35$ an hour is my comfort zone. Find a good company is all I can say.

Are there $40-50 pr hour jobs in So Cal for new grads with a bachelor's degree? Maybe for engineering or programming but a bachelor's in psychology is fairly useless on its own.

A BA in psychology barely gets you more than minimum wage. You need to do a lot of work to get into grad school. Once you have a grad degree depending on the specialty you can make $40-50 an hour

I think it's really endearing that Dave urges her to move out despite her debt. He cares about her mental health and living situation - not just paying off the debt. Love this dude, he's that little angel on your shoulder that encourages you to pick the right choices financially that will ultimately set you free :)

I see most people who go for psych degrees have some type of trauma they are actually trying to heal within themselves. It sucks because it let's me know we should have had therapy as kids so we could stop trying to therapy ourselves in college. Smh. I hope she heals from the abuse. My mother and brother did the same.

How do people watch Dave and not think this guy is completely lost and out of touch? To just say "get a $40 an hour job" is completely delusional, but hey I'm sure with his 200 million he can give whatever advice he wants. Only a small portion of the country makes over 100k a year....

Get working even if it's $20 an hour. Then look for something better or a second job while you have some sort constant income even if it's not enough. If you are working it's easier to find another job than if you are not working. Prospective employers value the fact that a person is a worker.

So get a second job. My wife worked three jobs while going to school full time. Then she worked full time while getting her second degree and her masters. I did the same - worked full time while getting my bachelors and masters degrees.

Beans have doubled in price where I live; pre-pandemic $1/pound, now $2+/pound. Rice doubled during pandemic but has since come down to reasonable price. There have also been increases on flour & sugar, all basic commodities that lower income people depend on for sustenance. Just because someone is lower income does not mean they qualify for SNAP benefits, regardless of food inflation.

I understand those saying Dave is out of touch but he also acknowledged that until she gets a better job she's got to work multiple. And look where I live, it's not California and I see certain fast food restaurants starting people at $18 an hour. So having a defeatist attitude that you can only make $20 an hour is also a poor way to approach this situation mentally. I'm not saying that she can just easily go out and get a $50 an hour job tomorrow. And I don't necessarily think Dave thinks that's the case, I just think he's trying to light a fire under her so that she goes out and gets creative and looks under every nook and cranny to try to find any job that will pay higher or at least put her on the path to making more money. This is another example though of why people need to think before they just go get degrees. Have a plan with your degree. Way too many people out there with useless pieces of paper on their desk

I'm a mathematics major and we have a lot of students who were psych majors first. Math and psych are very similar make the change but choose wisely like comp sci or something because pure math sucks.

I would stay at your families place for another year or two to save up a ton money/get more experience before getting your own place, just don't buy anything you do not need. you can transfer your job or start over and you can move anywhere in the united states because you have money.

I believe Dave is saying don't settle for a $20 dollar an hour job with that type of degree. He over exaggerates a lot like the beans and rice comment. He doesn't actually mean literally rice and beans. He is more psychological with his money advice than math. He builds confidence in his listeners do go find a higher paying job and to go do the work.
