Absolutely stunning. The contrast between the maple and the rosewood just blew me away. Inspiring me to consider trying an electric guitar body using a combination of soft maple with rosewood glued together together.

Beautiful. How did you join the maple and rosewood on the plates? I was thinking about doing a black walnut/tiger maple end table but your combo might look better.

Back in the early 90’s I stumbled across a nice piece of Morado looking for exotics to make knife scales after I picked up the few pieces I had made the trip for but was very impressed by the Morado board and went back for another look at it the owner came over and gave me some info on it then he went and got a little water and we took the board out into the sunlight when he wet the board and wiped the water across the wood it just popped with multicolored and beautiful grain pattern I was sold the piece was 18”x 7.5”x 5/4” he charged me $5.50 for it what a deal I sand the knife handles to 1000 grit and then buff them with jewelers rouge using a loose cotton buffing wheel with great results I’ll be looking for more of your videos

I made a couple things with some of this wood recently. Mineral oil darkens both the sapwood and heartwood, however, it looks fantastic and takes very well to the wood if you wipe it with acetone first. A guy at the local Woodcraft store showed me three bowls from the same board of Bolivian Rosewood he made and finished with different oils. Mineral and linseed oil looked similar and both darkened the color of the wood. He finished one with Osmo and the wood stayed true to its color. Hope this helps anyone working with Bolivian Rosewood.

Whats your favorite wax or finish for black/darker woods?
@paul-ld9vh
@paul-ld9vh 4 жыл бұрын
@@blackmesaoutdoors4863 I used Valspar polyurethane spray initially, but since most of my dark wood projects are more "artistic " than functional, I finally decided that the natural beauty of the wood is preferred. I am very particular about the sanding part of the projects I work on (yes, I'm the guy who actually sands the wood up to 1200 grit) For ebony wood, it does make a difference. I actually enjoy the feel of rose woods when they are that smooth. Thanks for asking!

As always, an outstanding video! As a newbie to this field, I was wondering if you could put together a short video as to HOW you made the tray. Thought I'd see more comments from guitar people. East Indian Rosewood is commonly used on guitar fretboards , with Ebony and Maple also used. But shortages and restrictions, esp. around 2018 - 2019 on certain rosewoods, forced some makers to try Bolivian instead and I think it looks great. It will be certainly used more often and I hope it gets managed well.

So I built this tray (plagiarized?) , 12 1/2 x 20, finished with mineral oil and wax and it is absolutely gorgeous. Not only did the mineral oil bring out the color, but the grain just popped. Add to that the small stripes of yellow from the sapwood and it defies description. Going to buy another set of this wood, don't have a project yet, but one will come up soon enough. Thanks so much for all your videos, really love them.

Just got 20 boards of 1/4 inch (yes so thin) 5.5 inch wide by 5-8.5 ft. It’s ridiculously hard and perfect in dimensions. Trying to figure out what to make with it. Thinking maybe an Adirondack lounger but not sure how it is outdoor. Of got it for $20 as a throwin on a walnut purchase because he had no idea what it was. It’s at least 30 yr old he said.

Hi Mark, love this video and they way to explain things! Thank you. Question: we just bought a live edge morado slab (so excited!) for a dining table. We have used Emmet's "The Good Stuff" to finish our walnut kitchen island, but never had any experience with Walrus oil & wax. Love the way your tray turned out with Walrus. Have you used The Good Stuff on this wood before? Just wondering how it would look? I would love all the beautiful shades in the grain of this Bolivian rosewood to pop out; to enhance the contrast. Would appreciate your advice on how to finish this live edge table. Thank you!

I want to achieve a semi-gloss finish on Pau Ferro veneer for a turntable plinth (base). I already applied the dewaxed shellac seal coat. I now need to fill a small worm hole - i presume with either saw dust and shellac or wood filler (which do you recommend). Then should i use a grain/pore filler to further smooth the wood before i finish coat it? What finish coat would you recommend? Lacquer, wax, oil, other?
@WoodworkersSourcecom
@WoodworkersSourcecom 3 жыл бұрын
I would probably choose sawdust and shellac to fill the hole. Get it smooth, then apply another coat or two of shellac for good measure (whole project). Then probably 3 coats of lacquer or urethane will be enough to have filled the pores on this wood. Don’t think a separate filler is necessary.
