I understand what you're saying totally, I've worked since I was 14 years old. Cut grass, farm work, irrigation work, general construction, USMC, general Security and nuclear security. I rent currently but working on getting another house. I've learned to fix just about everything I can myself. I have a 2002 Tahoe 326k, 2006 mercury grand marquis 292k and 2006 Tacoma 220k making payment on it 2 more years. I swing 12s at my fulltime job, overtime is intermate. Been here over 28 years. I have a side hustle. All this work allows me to provide for my family a good life. I learned to do things because I couldn't afford to pay the pros in the past. I watch a lot of KZfaq before trying anything new and determine if it's to be a real pain in my ass. Then I pay someone or just ask for some help. The real sad part I see myself to be working at least till I'm 65-67 years old. It just is so expensive to live these days. Trump 2024!!!!

I moved out of Commiefornia 2 years ago. Moved to the Appalachian mountains and have never been happier. My cost of living has dropped by 50%. I am now mortgage and debt free. No car payments. The little house I had in California ( around 1100 sq ft) is now going for 500K. It is not a fancy neighborhood- it's working class.

No one forces me to buy or spend my money on anything I don't need, the problem is that people do not educate themselves and instead whine and complaint about everything and anything but take no actions to understand their finances. They live of appearances and false pretentions just to impress others. It is not the government fault, the politicians or your neighbors parrot. It is each individual responsibility to educate themselves and act accordingly.

I can repair a leaking roof, install a toilet, change the car oil, etc. We have one kid, good health, our only debt is a $1295 mortgage payment. We put all our $ into retirement planning.

as long as you plan on staying in that house, pay it off, keep all debt to zero. if you have 401s, drop those for a ira and Certificates of Deposit (CD), take an exempt from taxes coming out your check for 6 months both parties, get a small pt gig reselling online claim homestead for an office space. by next year most your home is paid off. after 5 years of putting money in a high interest cd, put that into Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). don't buy rentals proporties right now it all bad. ira investment trusts are better outside the usa, charles scbwab offers international reits. i do them the return are excellent. forget all the garbage investments with ira's stick with asset class investments only. no gm or cvs, type crap. no tech bs. next is gold and silver stocks with divs only. no oil till you reach at least 1 million in your portfolios. all investments outside the usa only. USA stocks are all Junk. i can only speak for what I learned and do. when you retire it won't be in the usa it will be in dubai

One thing I noticed recently, after driving through a Denver area suburb with $750K-$1.3M homes. Cars in the driveway included cars like mid-2000s Chevy Suburbans, Toyota Tacomas, Corollas and 2012 Chrysler minivans. With few exceptions - no Teslas, Corvettes, or Porsches. I see more Mercedes in the Downtown area where people rent apartments.

The only way to make money on a car lease is honestly is use your highest credit rating to get the best car you can get and sell it off to some unsuspecting sucker as early as you can. This way you get cash and they have to pay it off. Keeping the car has always been a terrible investment. Frankly at their best, cars are a luxury for very rich people to collect because they can afford to take the loss financially. People who think paying off a car is the same as investing in some forms of means of production or income (prominent rhethoric in the Uber era) are honestly missing the fundamental aspects such as innovation in the automotive sector, cost of maintainance and repair, state fees etc. It doesn't add up to a positive on the balance sheet no matter what you do. And I am not even talking about insurance, potential insurance claims, dealer markup or any other more extreme circumstance, like going to prison for running a person over, and any math goes out the window. Sure, there are a lot of places in the USA specifically, such as rural states, where a car can be framed as a necessity, or a job that involves owning a pickup truck. But the idea that everyone should own a vehicle and must drive a vehicle and pay whatever it costs is more or less a wester, USA-based invention that is alien, and even utterly unfeasible in many parts of the world. Never mind that America failed to achieve this crazy dream on the whole, statistically speaking. The most cruicial point I am making is that, with the economy falling apart, even basic common sense dictates that it should be the first thing to go. I think now the US is waking up to the reality of this among other things, and maybe even investing in better available public transportation would have been better for the country in the long run. Especially when the only real argument boils down to something like "that's too much like hippie europe" or whatever it is.

Gave up the house. Went from $3,000 mo to $1,200 mo. That did not include maintenance and all the things we thought we had to have, that was minimum another $1,000-$1,500 mo. No payments, cars paid off, no credit cards. A house does not appreciate that much. Now the big item, healthcare. Last year my wife went on medicare and this fall I go on it, we essentially did not have insurance. Until medicare happens, we are at severe financial risk even with insurance. My insurance risk exposure is simple. Insurance pays nothing, nothing until my out of pocket $18,000 is met, period. Oh yeah, don't forget the premium, another $14,000. So my annual medical is $32,000. And you thought you only had a little money, think a little less! It's so frustrating that Americans can't do simple math. The medical complex is incredibly wealthy while we, their cash cow, can barely afford to live under a roof and feed ourselves. We must get control of this healthcare monster. Cheers

@@bizHammer Don't want free insurance but I do want fair coverage. Note I don't say insurance as there is no such thing today. It is simply a profit margin. What is needed is healthcare, not insurance, not for profit industry in charge of our quality of life. It is time for a single payer system and remove the profit component. As long as their is profit/greed there will be no emphasis or level of quality of care.

Insurance is basically you paying for future damage in installments. After 30 years of driving and 25 years with the same insurance company, I had my first accident back in 2007 (my fault - fender bender, no airbags went off, broken headlight and ruptured radiator - because my car was 10 years old, it was totaled) ... but because I had a speeding ticket a year before, the insurance company dropped me and I had to start with a different company with nearly double my old premium. I highly recommend just getting an older car with liability and comprehensive coverage (no collision). And if you happen to be in a light accident - just offer to pay the other party in cash for the damage vs filing a claim. It's cheaper than paying the premiums that will result from the accident.

@@bizHammer my buddy works in the car parts business (junk yard :) ) ... he tells me he frequently sees cars from the auction that are likely coming from "rich" (not wealthy) people who buy gap insurance (often second owners who buy the car after a lease return) ... when the warranty on their BMW 450i or whatever expires, and they start having mechanical problems while their real estate business, law practice, crypto-trading or custom whale-bone coreset making business starts losing money (many never bother even changing the oil in these things after purchase) ... they just go out and find a group of trees near their house on an icy day, and OOOOOPS. They get a newer model car in the process because of the gap insurance. They make the calculus that paying higher premiums makes more financial sense when the cost of repairs combined with the rapid depreciation means the cars aren't worth maintaining (to them). Every honest car owner winds up paying for their _upgrade_ . A new engine on some of these things cost $20k+ and no matter how good when new, after a few years of abuse they're going to break. It's anecdotal, but my friend says there's too much of a coincidence so many "nice" cars with relatively minor body damage (still fixable) with under 70K miles concurrently have a bad engine or transmission (especially since these cars are made to run at well over 120mph on the Autobahn day in and day out). You'll have better mechanical luck buying a wrecked Hyundai to fix up, than a Maserati with the same amount miles and body damage. See also studies on "Higher social class predicts increased unethical behavior".

I'd rather pay an extra $6,000 for a Toyota Corolla vs. a Mirage as hands down that Corolla will outlast that Mirage with less maintenance. I'm a firm believer in paying a little extra for quality as in the long run it will be cheaper, and the Corolla will hold it's value better than the Mirage.
