Hank wants Bobby to return to regular Church.
King of the Hill - S08E02 Reborn To Be Wild
Fearing that Bobby is succumbing to bad influences, Hank makes him join a local church youth group. Bobby discovers that the group consists of cool punks (including their tattooed pastor, Pastor K) who worship God through skateboarding and rock n' roll. Hank approves of Bobby's new found interest in religion, but disapproves of the way Bobby starts to dress and talk, and when Bobby gets his ear pierced, Hank forbids Bobby to attend the big Christian rock festival, Messiahfest. Meanwhile, Hank's friends (and Kahn) decide that death row convicts shouldn't be the only ones to get great meals, so they create the Last Meal Club, dedicated to creating perfect 'last meals' for themselves.

That's what's good about the show: though Hank is generally suspicious of non-conservative Christians, he's still capable of recognizing good people when he sees them. On the other hand, if Hank as a character is representative of the average rural American, the show humanizes American conservatives to Liberal Audiences, which is valuable in today's political climate. Not to try and make this clip a political discussion, just pointing out the value of dealing with the ongoing culture clashes in this manner.

@@agarion101 I think the catch you're gonna have here is that most people, even irreligious people, will agree with that. Keep in mind, plenty of deeply religious people don't think that 'respect thigh mother and father' is a blank check for parental abuse either. The first time I saw this episode, it had me reeling. I thought, "why wouldn't Hank be overjoyed at Bobby liking church?" And "Hank is being irrational". Then at the end, when Hank pulled out the box of all Bobby's past fads, and then said "I don't want the, uh, Lord, to wind up in this box", all the tumblers fell into place and it all made perfect sense. A testament to the GOATed writing of this show.

King Of The Hill humor never came from punching down, a place of judgement, or bullying people who you don't agree with. That's why the humor is timeless. Despite being an old school dude set in his ways, Hank was constantly growing and evolving as a man, a husband, and a dad. A large number of Americans have stopped doing that now. They either want things to stay the same as they were in the "good ol' days" (times which are mostly just nostalgia, not the reality of how things ACTUALLY were then) or they want the world to completely change overnight to fit their ideology. Be more like Hank. Be open to growth and change and temper it with a firm set of values and standards, but respect others who you may not agree with as well.

I'm not even a member of the faith any more and I remember bible study sessions just comparing the same stories from the perspective of the different apostles via the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Even then, it is understood that the writers of the 4 gospel texts are truly anonymous and are instead the teachings heralded by the followers of the apostles before being recorded around ~90-110 AD. The reason I love this moment so much is because it feels like the inverse of the problem some latter episodes in the series have. Like you know how later on characters start to demonize Hank Hill without hearing him out or considering his words, this is the total opposite of that; another adult walks up and rightly corrects his own child instead of Hank. Bless whoever wrote this moment.

I'm sorry, but I genuinely fail to see how representation is making media worse. It just seems like people are getting offended that gay people are on your screen. Most of your favorite films and shows are also probably "woke." Star Trek takes place in a borderline socialist utopia. Star Wars was written by a Vietnam protestor who modeled the Rebel Alliance after the Viet Kong. Jaws is a criticism of capitalistic greed in the face of imminent disaster. The Matrix is a story about revolution and change directed by trans sisters. These stories aren't subtle. They take very distinct political and social stances. The only reason you hate diversity in films is because it violated your nostalgia. You people would absolutely despise Ripley or Sarah Connor if they were made today, you would call them "stupid characters who make the men look incompetent." In other words: the fuck over it. LGBTQ people aren't staying in the closet. If that offends you, watch something else.

It's like what I've been saying about modern parenting - you're not making childhood better, you're making adulthood worse. Too many free adult luxuries for children, not enough freedoms for adults. And EVERYBODY BECOMES AND STAYS AN ADULT FAR LONGER THAN THEY'RE CHILDREN. I'm forever pissed about this, even when younger parents were children getting free cell phones. It's just stupid.

To be fair, aside from a general dislike of the Christian rock genre, Hank's issue is less with them and more with Bobby's susceptibility towards getting swept up in fads and then discarding them.
