Yngwie said when he first started playing a guy noticed his minimal hand motions and said, “it looks like you’re knitting.” That stuck with me. Essential not to dig in deep and use the least of amount of pressure needed. You kids are so lucky you got Bernth and KZfaq to get great teachers. I’m always impressed when I click a video. You’re like Paul Gilbert level now! Great discipline and technique.

Your GENIUS shows every time you share your knowledge with us, and in doing so we obtain a small amount of your GENIUS and we make incredible gains in our speed, technique, and overall enjoyment of hearing the incredible gains that we receive from the knowledge that you share (I'm certain that there are other guitarists that gain much more than the rest of us). THANK YOU, THANK YOU, and THANK YOU. It is not an overstatement to say that your teaching brings forth a new light that illuminates many of the previously darkened areas of our guitar education. Not only that here I have to rewind multiple times just to process what you say in real time with the images, but the exercises are very professional. Respect. oh... that is surprising. Switching those angles, i.e. introducing rotational out-of-plane motions of the righ hand, is what is often told to be avoided at any cost. As far as I know such shredders like Paul Gilbert don't do it, he just hits the string that he needs to jump over while it is muted with left hand. But here you show totally different approach, and it is obviously working great, as you are able to play really fast and clean. Very interesting... Thanks for sharing your experince!

I actually use my pick in many ways. I turn it like in the thumbnail so the picks tip glides over the strings giving a more warm and dampened sound and is good for slow parts of songs which are quiet and require less treble, but your pick tip requires to be a but rounded at the end not really pointed. Then I use my pick horizontally with the strings for more crisp and bright sounding songs or parts of songs. Also the firmer you hold your pick the more crisp it will sound as well as the closer you play to the bridge the crisper or bright it sounds The more you play over the fretboard and closer to the middle of the fretboard the more soft and warm your strings will sound. Some guitars use identical pickups yet you can hear a drastic change in sound when you switch pickups that’s because less tension is on the strings at the middle or the neck and you have more tension at the bridge where the strings are most rigid and firm. So your pickups will sound different even if they are identical because of the tension on the strings. I sometimes play over the fretboard so I do not have to switch from my bridge pickup for certain songs or to exacerbate the warmth of the neck pickup. You can also use your pick for tapping by using the pick edge instead of your finger to tap on the frets to increase the sound of the ghost notes.

Was always fucked when switching to a higher string after two / four / six notes on the lower string before. Why? Because I'm playing always a picking angle which is good for uneven played notes but kills me when it is about speed for even played numbers of notes. Thank you Bernth, today you resolved a big miracle for me why I always sucked at such parts making a lot of string noises during the transition!

I wasn't aware of this pick angle thing until I came across Troy Grady's website recently, where he has close up videos of the pick motions of various famous guitarists. I then started paying attention to what my right hand is doing and sure enough, I unconsciously tilt the pick this way and that for ascending and descending scales and sweeps. I've never had to think about it; if you don't do it, things don't work, so your fingers fiddle until they settle into the lower energy, efficient motions.

It depends on what type of escape motion you make, that is, when you play a note upstroke or downstroke you launch into the air and the pick breaks free of being trapped between the strings. Troy Grady has videos on it to help. He did an interview with streetwise guitar channel that's good.look up downward escape and upward escape guitar picking on youtube

On single notes it doesn't matter if you up stroke or down stroke the note. Chords yes it matters so if you are going from the low E to A start with an up stroke so on beat 4 the pick is sitting on the A string for the next run. Make it easy for you to play that's all that matters.

Man, I've been playing for like 25 years but I'm stuck with the same angle (not the angle axxis described int the video, but rather in an other angle) Exactly the same as Marty Friedman. The pick is tilting backwards instead of frontward as you. I'm starting to believe that it's a problem. I think I could play faster if I could play the other way. Does this make sense? The thing is that changing a technique wich I used for so long is so hard. What's your thoughts on this? Should I make the long hard change?
