greetings. if you would be interested in hearing some more different sounding audio from some of these games, check out some of the jank turbografx-16 conversions a lot of people were doing at the time with many nes games. there is actually multiple conversions of the first mario, with different results in each. some of their conversions totally just have broken or horrendous audio, but some actually have an interesting different sound. contra, megaman, castlevania, and many others were converted to the tg16 at the time too in several third world countries and stuff. it was just an easy thing to do due to similarities in the hardware i guess.

Nope, I remembered it perfectly, according to how it sounded on a NA NES console. I think it sounds better on an objective basis as a classically trained vocalist. The Famiclones sound tinny, at least with this game, but probably many others. it is obvious it is mono sound whereas the authentic version sounds fuller and could almost be mistaken for stereo. You may feel nostalgia for hearing it wrong but that doesn't change the fact that's not how the artist intended it. You missed another possible solution - using a microcontroller like an Arduino to swap duty cycles. Seems like it would be a lot simpler than a ROM hack if you're talking about truly fixing the bug. Or you could just go get a real NES. Also, you didn't dig deep enough to get to the real answer. Was this done deliberately or was UMC just that incompetent?

The pacing is excellent and the narration is patient and focused. I loved what I saw :> as for the actual soundtrack, I had no idea! I found it curious that the sound effects in particular sounded so close to how they’d appear in New Super Mario Bros., as if they’d heard themselves what Famiclones sounded like and used those instead of the more hollow 50% duty cycles. It pops out through music nicely and sounds much more lively.

This is very interesting. If you are like me (grew up in the 8-bit age in NA and love knowledge) you probably got most European Nintendo info from Retro Gamer, but a magazine cannot convey info like this, and it is in serious danger of disappearing. Look at the sound differences between PC speaker sound in older DOS games and DOSbox. It's kind of crazy and a little sad.

This is fascinating, I didn't know that cloned consoles had altered music because of the way it read the chips, but for you to then explain it in a way that makes sense was next level! I like how it sounds in 12.5%, it reminds me of what Nintendo did in Super Mario Maker 2, where they made an Athletic theme for SMB1, and used the 12.5% sound. To me, I compare the sounds to where you strum the strings on a guitar: closest to neck = 50%, middle = 25%, and closest to bridge = 12.5%.
@chirinea
@chirinea 6 ай бұрын
Interesting analogy! And I think people underestimate the effect that the position of the strum in a guitar makes. I'd say that most claims about "tonewood" can be debunked with strum placement, but I don't want to invoke a war in my comments section! =P

Honestly despite being an American who grew up with the "official" sound palette, I really do prefer the clone sound. It's more crisp and has more personality. Koji Kondo was a brand new composer at the time and hadn't really figured out how to shift duty cycles for different timbres, and it's entirely possible he would have used the 25% duty cycle at least part of the time if he had the expertise that he developed over the next few years.
@chirinea
@chirinea 7 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure he knew how to manipulate the duty cycles, as the underwater theme uses the 12,5% duty cycle at the very start of each note to make some sort of "pluck" effect. Also, some sound effects use different duty cycles.I guess it was a deliberate choice to use the 50% in all songs.
@releasethebogus8581
@releasethebogus8581 7 ай бұрын
chirinea is right, Koji Kondo really knew what he was doing. It's also worth noting that SMB wasn't his first work, I believe that was either Devil World or Punch-Out (just from listening to them, I think he did Devil World first) which both preceded SMB by one year. I do also like the clone sound though! I think what Kondo was trying to do was mimick a woodblock, whereas the 25% duty cycle sounds a bit more like a trumpet, which, vindicating the famiclones, is often used as the lead for more modern renditions of the theme.

Thanks for this awesome info! I made my own watch using a SAMD51 microprocessor and coded a sound processor to import and play multi-channel 8-bit audio mixed into a single channel. It is currently hard-coded to play sine waves rather than square waves (because it was a cool coding challenge to implement all four -- includes sawtooth and triangle)...still recognizable, but definitely different from either console. Based on this, I'm now going to expose waveform choices, including a slider for square wave duty cycle, in my menu for playback.

Well technically neither the nes or the clones had a dedicated sound chip, the sound was integrated in the CPU based on the MOS 6502 UMC. UMC implemented that same design from MOS But when reverse enginering the sound system, made a mistake in interpreting the register for the pitch. Fun fact: the CPU Ricoh designed for Nintendo contains cloned technology itself. Ricoh deliberately made a modification in the MOS 6502 design to avoid copyright issues. (so maybe UMC also swapped the 2 duty cycles deliberately, but then i would have chosen the 25 and 75% duty cycles)

A cousin of mine had a famiclone model that looked like the original NES in design, so the first time I saw an actual NES I thought "the original NES looks just like a !". Probably nostalgia or pure individual preference, but the higher pitched famiclone version of Super Mario Bros sounds more pleasurable and energetic to my ears, hahaha. I never knew there was a difference in how the sounds were played, but now I am fascinated by it and want to know more about it too -- original or famiclones.

I had the Top Game famiclone, and didn't know about this. Honestly, when hearing that comparions at the start.... I can't tell the difference. lol. The powerups was much more noticeable.

I thought you gonna tell about the game speed difference on PAL and NTSC versions, which also sound differently - much more differently than in this video. At some point I realised that I had been playing NES on a "low speed" all my childhood and it was very unusual to play my favourite games on the correct speed years later.

Love this video! Perfect cross section between nerdy but informative enough in a pop space to be viewable to other people. This video is mostly old news to me as a giant sound and tech nerd, but I love that this video is both accurate and descriptive enough for me to be able to show my interests to friends that find the ideas of tech interesting but don't really have the knowledge to connect the dots. Like don't get me wrong, I'm a GIANT tech and audio nerd. I spent hours of my childhood dicking around in Eclipse, FL Studio, Ableton, and all sorts of programs that require deep knowledge of computers. I know too much for my own good in these spaces, I ruin the surprise of things by digging into how they work. Saying I knew all this already isn't an insult, rather saying that this video is very accurate on the details to the point that I didn't feel any shockers when watching the video. However, I'm still able to feel the emotion of the shocker reveals, even knowing exactly what you're about to say. That's what separates a normally good informative video content from the great. The truly great will take information you already know and recontextualize it, give it another use. This is a really great video. I appreciate you explaining your gaming experience in a way that people who didnt play on famiclones can fully understand. Yeah, if somebody asked this, I probably could have given an answer that's about the same. But it wouldn't have been anywhere near as detailed and understandable. Now instead of waiting for this extremely niche topic to kinda come in in conversations, I can just send it to my friends and they can think the duty cycles are just as interesting as I feel. Subbed for sure!

I definitely played it on a clone console, but since I've listened to the song so many times over the years, I honestly can't tell if I remember the clone version or not. Both sound familiar but I could be gaslighting myself.

I grew up with both! I had an original NES when I was about 4-5 years old, but it stopped working and I got a famiclone. I'm kinda used to both sounds, also the sped up music in bootleg cartridges

You're right. I do remember it wrong. How I actually remember it is the theme cutting out certain sound channels when other sound effects were playing due to the console limitations!
@chirinea
@chirinea 7 ай бұрын
Lol, that's right, it happens just like that. And for the most part the channel that is interrupted is the second pulse wave, as most sound effects uses it.

As soon as I heard the 50% duty cycle example I heard the Zelda opening starting. I grew up playing on an original console, so I'm curious how other games would sound on the clone-consoles. This is a sort of video that I find incredibly interesting, the sound aspect of it, the hardware, the software, but I find myself always learning from a distance rather than actually doing anything with the information... I used to mess with things more, I've just grown so tired or something.

I grown up on Dendy. I don't really remember which sound it played on SMB, but various cartridges with various versions like flying Mario could have different sounds. Distinctively remember level complete music could with different notes. Then I remember getting some strange keyboard like NES, which had entirely different problem with music. Like in Batman's first and forth level's music you could hear constant pausing, when it should play a long note. Kinda ruined the experience for me, but I had no other option to play, so I had to endure it.

Thank you for this. I grew up in California, so of course I had an original NES. But I only discovered the wide world of Famiclones during my emulation days. I think it's remarkable that the rest of the world was able to play NES games regardless of the country, through any means possible. Everyone should have access to the same games everyone else does. We are so fortunate in 2023.

For many of us in Brazil "Nintendo" was a standard, not a console, like VHS or Betamax for vídeo cassettes. It even allowed us having access to more games than the ones in officially covered regions, as we would also get lots of unlicensed games from different countries. But I agree, we live in more fortunate times nowadays.

All my famiclones had blobs and correct duty cycle. I did remember friend borrowing his older "Pegasus" model that used normal full size chips and it did sound funny, not only with SMB and in SMB the most glaring difference was sound Mario made when jumping. To me since I was so used to correct sound this console was very jarring.
