That was a nice touch: Columbo starts with his standard "I'll annoy you until you talk to me" approach, but when the good doctor implies a willingness to help (just not to violate his trust), Columbo immediately finds a way to ask the important questions while accommodating him. It's a clever way to meet him in the middle.

What a beautiful exchange. Love that Columbo knows the doctor does not underestimate him like suspects do so does not pull the slow witted detective routine and quickly invents a scenario he knows the doctor would be able to discuss without breaking doctor patient confidentiality. Plus it throws in the standard Columbo crashes elegant meal or party trope with the smarmiest waiter.

I learned so much about talking to people from Columbo. Make them comfortable. Detect their no-gos and show that you respect them. Be humble, but don't crawl. If necessary, take one detour after another as long as every one leads you an inch closer to the target. Show curiosity and interest for what they do and what they like. It gives you not only clues about peoples' way of thinking but is also very interesting and improves your horizon.

Notice how the doctor has a snobby attitude UNTIL he's told a former patient may be a murderer? Then he starts to take the situation seriously. I think the only real flaw of the episode is that it wasn't realized as a sequel to the "Bye-Bye Sky High IQ Murder Case", which had a very similar story of a husband going to prison for embezzlement & murder. It would have tied the newer movies to the classic series much nicer.

Roscoe Lee Browne was in two episodes of All In The Family, playing different characters. The episode referenced here was 1973's 'Archie in the Hospital.' In that episode, Archie strikes up a conversation with the man in the next bed in the hospital, whom he can't see because the privacy curtain is drawn. They develop quite a bond in a short time, and yes, Archie is surprised at the end of the episode to find that the man he was talking with was black.

It was also an inventive twist on the "who done it" detective film. The viewer knows from the beginning who the villan is, instead it becomes "How does Columbo crack it". The only person with enough irrational misguided hate that I have ever met that I think would be capable of committing evil acts out of spite jealousy and revenge is a red-haired girl that I had left in my early twenties in those twelve-step meetings named Hope

These waiters get too wrapped up in their surroundings. I have never worked as a waiter, but I have worked in a rich neighborhood and it’s hard sometimes to remember you are just a servant there. this guy got all offended by Colombo’s Simplicity. It’s like relax dude don’t get offended. You don’t own the restaurant and you are not a customer of the restaurant. You’re just a waiter.

You learn eating escargots as a kid by dipping bread in the garlicbutter of your dad's escargots , always plenty of it , and then you start eating the snails yourself.... , but it's all about the melted garlicbutter .
