I think the biggest problem when interacting with the police is that it's impossible to predict how a cop would react to any of these things. Power trippers will make shit up and arrest you for less.

Also important to PLEASE don’t do this for just a speeding ticket. If you wait a moment, you’d be surprised how most of the time what they’re pulling you over for is trivial

I've seen to many videos where a cop "just wants to talk" says they're not being detained and then after being asked if they are free to go the cop will respond no. Normally followed up with "do you have identification?" What do you do when you're not being detained but you're not free to go?

I was taught this stuff long ago when I was but a wee boy, and it's super important and works. I was once arrested for a false charge, and when my lawyer found out that I did all of these rules, he was very happy and praised me. The law man was pleased, and when he is, it's a good thing

I’ve seen videos of people being arrested for #5. They were charged with ‘obstruction’. It doesn’t usually happen, but sometimes you just get stuck with a bad cop.

Do not ask for permission to speak with a lawyer. Rather, *demand* to speak with a lawyer. Incorrect: "May I speak with a lawyer?" Correct: "I want to speak with a lawyer." The problem with the incorrect phrasing in the first example ("May I...?") is that the police and prosecutors will say that it was just a request for advice, not an actual assertion of the arrestee's rights. As most of you know (or should know) by now, the courts are *very* reluctant to protect people's rights these days, so you have to place the court in the position of having no practical choice -- no wiggle room -- by asserting your rights in the correct manner. There is a famous case out of Louisiana where an arrestee told the interrogating officer "I want a lawyer, dawg." This request was ignored by the police, who continued the interrogation. The Louisiana Supreme Court, in an outrageous display of intellectual dishonesty, said that the man's constitutional right to counsel was not violated because there is no such thing as a "lawyer dog" and therefore the arrestee had not invoked his right to counsel. So.... 1. If you're in custody and the police start interrogating you, always demand (politely, but not in the form of a question) a lawyer. This will stop the questioning until a lawyer is present. This is an important protection because an interrogation in a small windowless room at the police station is an extremely coercive environment. 2. If you're *_not_* in custody and the police start asking you questions, just invoke the 5th amendment and then leave. (If you are at home, close the door. If they're already inside, ask the cops to leave. If they refuse, you can assume you are in custody, in which case you should refer back to item #1 and demand a lawyer.)

Can confirm. I was “pulled over” parked- when two cop cars sirens on pulled up to my car and knocked on the window. I was legally parked. I had done absolutely nothing illegal except park my old af van in a nice neighborhood. I had just went to the park and ran a few errands just got back to my van, so it was parked for a few hours which again did not break any of the rules of the parking sign that I was parked in front of. I didn’t roll my window down but asked how can I help you. They kept shouting at me, I CANT HEAR YOU. Surrounded my vehicle and began pointing flashlights jn. I was pissed. I turned my camera on so they could see me recording, rolled the window down and said, what seems to be the problem officer? 🙂 - they then asked me a series of questions, why are you parked here? Where are you going? Are you trying to sleep here?! WTF… I simply asked had I broken any law? Was I parked legally? They confirmed no and yes. Then said well you can’t sleep here! I’m not sleeping, we’re clearly having a conversation now sir, which I couldn’t do if I was asleep of course. They then said the park closed at 10. I said thanks for the information, it’s 9 and I’m not at the park, I in fact was just about to leave so am I being detained or am I free to go? They looked at each other and mumbled you’re free to go… then they were pissed. 🤣😂 I just smiled waved and drove away. ✌🏾🐷’s 😌
