Perfect timing Lee! Went to a local nursery and and saw a tray of rare plants in little solo cups packaged nicely. Rifled thru a few and though I saw a variegated pothos. In early March, I put two of my Monsteras (owned for 3 years) outside on my balcony...to die. In April, I switched fertilizers. These little buggers have not died, they are thriving! They were under Soltech grow lights inside my apartment, I think their growth has to do with the fertilizer, light (east facing that's gone by noon), plus the sun/heat are helping me not over-water (I live in Los Angeles). I've learned so much from you, thank you!

I had to move my Monstera away from our east facing window because she was getting sun stressed (close to the Arctic circle), and I was SO worried! But the newest leaf just puffed up fully and is 70cm long. I bought the cutting late last year with two leaves that were 30 and 40cm. I'm so glad she's happy! I put her in an Elho self watering pot with indoor potting soil/perlite/orchid bark and give her a splash of fertilizer on each 3L watering now that we have sun.

If you have a very chunky soil mix, they are less reliable. Chunky soil mix, means more air gaps and less contact with the pins. Since they work by detecting electrical current, less contacts means less current, less current reads more dry. So it will, by default, read more dry than it actually is.

Since im experimenting and making moss poles myself and there is no sphagnum moss to buy here, can I use my native/wild moss from the forest. Also I found what appears to be Rhytidium rugosum moss which looks similar to sphagnum when dried. I guess there's a difference in moisture keeping capacity and risk of disease?

I would love to have a monstera large form, but I don't want it to get gigantic, as I move my plants out to my porch each spring. Seeing these amazing specimens get way too big to be moved, what would you suggest to keep it on the small to medium side?

Probably don't get a large form. You could keep cutting it back every time it gets too big but then you have to deal with it reverting leaf size every time.

Get a light meter. If you actually can compare where your plant is to where it will be you’ll see huge spike of light intensity and know to avoid that. 400fc should be your baseline. 2000-3000fc on the high end. Monitor closely. Slowly build capacity.

@@sharonhoffer3599 But fungus gnats eat organic matter and fungi. If you have any peat based potting soil, you'll have that in your soil. I'm not sure why you think orchid bark would be their only food source. Still a bit confused.

@@KillThisPlant I never said anything about orchid bark. Just the wood chips, as we call them in Australia, in any potting mix blend. We actually sell an indoor mix that is bark free where I work, Osmocote make it, which is less prone to fungus gnats. All my indoor plants are bark free and I never have any issues with fungus gnats unless I introduce bark, like I did recently with a small orchid I bought, and straight away I get fungus gnats.
