Did you know there's a very good reason why you SHOULD SMASH your spark plugs when you get them?!
Its because you should always check the gap of new spark plugs before installing them. If they're over the specifications they need to be wacked down below it. Then using the plug gap tool you can adjust the gap UP until you come into spec. In this case (2000 VW cabrio ABA engine) the gap spec is 0.028" the plugs came 0.040" thus smashing was required.
