I always use light theme during the sunny day, but when then sun goes down I switch to a dark one

An article of you made me change from a dark theme to a light one. I had to get used to it and my headaches were out of nowhere gone. I am happy that I made the change even when I am not using your theme anymore.

I like to use Gruvbox Light, Whether morning, noon or night. Dark themes may be all the rage, But white on dark just turns the page To blurry mess, a texty fight. Gruvbox Light, a gentle sight, Keeps my eyes fresh, my mind alight.

Your other video on this subject is what originally turned me on to all your online content, so this seems like a perfect opportunity to express the huge amount of appreciation I have for all the quality content you put out (not just on youtube but also stitcher and now for JetBrains etc.). Keep up the great work man 👏👏👏

I once asked a colleague, "Why do you use light theme?" He promptly yet casually answered, "I'm not a pussy." And that was that.

I agree with all of this. While my OS is in a dark theme because I don't want it glowing in my face all the time, all my IDEs are set to a light theme because I just find that much more readable.

I've stayed on light theme for years and some of my friends were shocked by that. I kept using the same argument as you : "Light your room properly and configure your screens properly".

I watched your previous videos about this subject some time back and really did try to switch to a light theme, even going as far as creating my own light theme in PHPStorm. The main sticking point for me, was that although I can get a light theme to look great and be easy on the eyes on my macbook screen, whenever I tried to work with it on an external monitor, it just lead to headaches and a twitchy eyelid that lasted for months. Maybe I just need a better quality external monitor but I tried both my own monitor and multiple different ones at the office. I just couldn't get the balance of brightness and contrast working for me so reverted to my dark theme after a couple of months. :(

With a lighter color theme a can put my monitor around 10 cm farther away and still read all my code very good. Game changer for the well being of my eyes!

Funny, I was light scheme guy since I left DOS waters. Only recently I switched to dark themes. My reason was that I've noticed my vision in the dark is not as sharp as it used to be. Believe it or not, my ability to detect subtle changes in shades of gray improved after couple of weeks. Yes, it might be placebo, but still...

Hi, I am considering to try this but... do you have any reference on "proper lighting" the room? I have been trying to get some info, but I'm unsuccesful until now...

You mention coding at night, in many cases lower level lighting in the evening provides better sleep. How do you tackle that part given it goes against the need to brighten up the room?

I have been using light theme in Phpstorm since 2014. Just by default, and I don’t understand the dark one. It’s so hurt to read the white text on the black background. I cry every time 😟

Having met your video, I have already used the light theme on a regular basis. It all started when I was working on very bright summer days. It turned out that the dark theme on a bright day became very faded and it was difficult to perceive it. Usually all applications have a light theme, and everything is dark, or it is not very. Therefore, when the IDE has a dark theme enabled, then when switching to another application where the light one is enabled, you begin to experience discomfort. p.s. I don't know English well.

Hmm.. I am struggling with something unexpected. Not with problems with light mode in general, it's pretty awesome when I lowered my monitor backlight. But my brain is hardwired to think, to find connections in the code based on all the colors. Now it's very painful to comprehend the code, even when it's easy to read. This will be the biggest challenge, to rewire my brain to think in a new color scheme. But I think that the brain is possible of learning multiple languages, why not multiple color schemes - the proof is, that we are usually accustomed to decypher the light colored sources of Github or Gitlab. But still.. it takes some time, while being not so productive :(

Yes, lightning is very underrated by many. I don't have a window in my office so I use the IKEA FLOALT light panels there. One from the top and one form the side. It gives me very good lightning that is good for the eyes. I use dark theme and I really like it, but I will accept your challenge and try a light scheme for a week. Any suggestions for a good theme for PHPStorm?

bruh there were studies done on this. Light color scheme is better at focusing on structure, dark color scheme is better at focusing on function. If you are in a crappy codebase, I hope you pretty it up with a dark color scheme

One other thing. I believe that black on white is very easy for our eyes, because it has high contrast ratio. But what about your Light Lite profile? I see big part of code in light green. I checked the cotrast ratio and it was rated "very poor" which I agree from a simple glance. Imho it's all so relative. You can strain your eyes much more with the low contrast ratio with bad light theme. And you can be much more ok with any other dark theme with proper contrast ratio. Another thing is, you lower the display backlight, because you are using light IDE theme now. But what about all other applications, websites, terminal, which are becoming more "dark side" trendy. You have problem with lowered backlight now, when switching to them. I am not meaning it as a critique, just thinking out loud, how to deal with it myself.

I've used light themes for many years, but in the end I like the dark themes better. Maybe it's just because they remind me of the good old days when all we had was green, blocky text on black screens 😀

I do feel like I am in the minority, but I do prefer using light mode. My devices automatically switch to dark mode at sunset and will switch back to light mode at sunrise, although I rarely code into the night so the vast majority of the time I am coding in light theme.
