Derek, best part of this video was the phone call with your dad. Brother, celebrate that. Life is so short. But your dad on more of your videos… He sounds like an amazing person. You’re very blessed.

As a kid at the time I was there, I associated Waipahu with one thing: A McDonald's with a big playground. That was about a decade before you were there, it seems. It was off Farrington Highway by what is now an O'Reillys and the building and parts of the playground were still there hidden and dilapidated just a few years ago.

So we lived in Waipahu in the mid-70's on Lumiauau Street. We had our wedding reception in our carport. There was a lot of sugar cane in the area back then and they would burn it before harvest and there were the cane spiders......... Used a laundromat that was attached to a bar with a pool table, so that was cool. Used to go to a strip joint named Little Egypt's with my husband who I met in Waipahu - he was in the navy and the guys went there to hang out, the bouncer was a big marine named Tiny (of course) - last time we checked, it was a pizza joint. The house was small, but 4 bed/2 bath and by sharing the rent with others, it was doable. I worked at Wahiawa General. Anyways, my husband actually found our old house last time we visited in 2019 with our kids - it's such a maze and the whole area is so different now, so built up in every direction. Just concrete now from north of Waipahu down to Pearl.

The best mechanics are in Waipahu. They have worked on so many kine kars and take pride in their work. Waikele's hillside location with winding roads in the hills are generally more desirable than the flat plains developments of utilitarian cookie cutter designed houses. Waikele is like an island oasis of more modern construction with incredible green landscaping and older trees can't be beat. It has a garden like quality that is not really available elsewhere in the area. It definitely offers a unique living experience with very easy access to all points on Oahu.

Oh, how I miss living in Waipahu! Still remember growing up there. Had the skyslide, go kart track, wigwam store, Gems, Tops restaurant, Waipahu theater, Sunset drive inn to watch movies. Tropical drive inn. Even was there when Taniokas just opened. Soo much more to mention. I love Waipahu. Thanks for sharing!

Its different now, Been here in Waipahu for 10 yrs and everyone is agro, from here all the way out west, the stress of surviving in this expensive state is showing. The politicians really want to push out the lower class aka Locals.

I grew up in Waipahu, all da way till I grad high school. Used to live right up the street from Leeward's. I remember me and my braddah used to ride our bikes down to Leeward's and buy penny candy. Used to have a Pioneer Chicken right across da street. Then my senior year high school, we had to move down close to August Ahrens. Most of that was before Waikele was real big too.

You missed Highway Inn, Plantation Village where you can see all the old plantation homes (I'm suprised not alot of people know about it!), Festival Market with hard to find Filipino vegetables. I used to joke that "Waipahu" and "Kalihi" are not filipino words, theyre still Hawaiian, lol..its funny how certain words take on different vibes because of their associations.

Derek, I live in a single family house in Makakilo. Why some residential areas are called apartments when in reality are single family homes? What benefits the Homeowners association gets classifying the single family homes "as apartments". I never understood that! Great video, Thank you!

I live in San Diego and some parts of Hawaii remind me of San Diego. Because how expensive San Diego is, buying a home in Hawaii isn't that out of touch for me in the near future. It's expensive here too but the times have been good to me.

Always Waipahu the sweetest spot for me, as my whole family clan lives there and visiting them every 2 years. yes homes are expensive and i do live in Canada and homes are expensive as well but the difference is like buying a burger without a bun in Canada compared to Hawaii you got great people, Scenery, Sunshine and Rainbows and of course Malasadas. MAHALO Bradah! 🤙

What do you mean when you said “it was someone else’s name on the house so you had to flip it to someone else to sell” in reference to the 3 houses you sold. I’m finishing up my real estate course. I don’t know anything yet, lol

It's not pex plumbing, it's polybutelene -quest pipe-, banned in new construction and horrible, it destroys homes when it bursts.
