You took advantage of me - Condon Memories 1985
Condon Memories All Star Band, Bern Jazz Festival 1985
Wild Bill Davison trumpet, Warren Vache cornet, Bob Wilber soprano sax, Bill Allred trombone, Bucky Pizzarelli guitar, Dick Wellstood piano, Milt Hinton bass, Jake Hanna drums.
The musician of honour in this session was veteran Bill Davison.
Wild Bill (William Edward) Davison was born in Defiance, Ohio on the 5th of January 1906. Starting in the early 1920's he began to build his career with various bands including Ben Meroff's Chicago-based orchestra (where he first met guitarist Eddie Condon).
For most of the 1930's he was in Milwaukee, billed as "Trumpet King" Davison, and despite a lip injury in 1939 (he was hit in the mouth, appropriately for Milwaukee, by a flying beer mug) had arrived in New York by 1941. There he worked in Nick's saloon and with an Original Dixieland Jazz Band re-creation for the Katherine Dunham show which culminated in his recording 12 sides for the Commodore label a week before his 38th birthday in 1944.
He recorded some brilliant sessions with George Brunis indicating he had finally found his own style. In 1945 he joined Eddie Condon's house band, and those long nights and hard musical pace at Condon's club made him a commanding front man, a tough and reliable lead cornetist that Condon could count on; above all an original.
Along with gold-standard Condon recordings and quartet dates of his own , by 1960 Davison was a soloist. Despite his regular reunions with Condon he began a new lifetime pattern of bandleading and touring, appearing between 1965 and 1975 with over 100 bands and recording over 20 new albums. In England he toured and recorded with Alex Welsh, Fred Hunt and Lennie Hastings, and in the 1970's moved to Denmark. He was still globetrotting in 1983 and after a short illness in 1983 played in the 1985 jazz festivals and toured England in 1986. He died on November 14th 1989 at the age of 83.

Wild Bill was 79 when he played here. Gives us old geezers some hope that we can play for some more years.

and he still played cornet. When I was 50 years old a professional musician told me "take a trumpet - you are getting to old to play the cornet".

I saw Wild Bill playing in 1980. During the concert I sneezed and he stopped playing and walked to the front of the stage and said: "young man, that was out of key". Just wanted to die.

Hello again from Ottawa! What a nice narrative you wrote(Mr.erwigfilms about one of my best friends in jazz(the others were Bud Freeman,Jonah Jones and Al Grey). I'm a visual artist(painter) and have done LP artwork for a few Jazz legends(most notably: Artie Shaw & Wild Bill Davison & Al Grey. Wild Bill had a heat attack in Ottawa and the Chateau Laurier found a substitute, so I spent a whole evening with Bill and his(what a saint!) wife. When she left the room, he opened-up his trumpet case(under the pretext of showing his trumpet to me)and enjoyed a shot of something colourless from a small valve oil bottle..."Wild Bill". Check out my cover art on Bill's 1999 Jazzology Recording: "Wild Bill in New Orleans" JCD-170. David W. Jones.

Turma boa, Wild Bill Davison sempre foi um excelente e notável trompetista, Bob Wilber dispensa comentários, notável tanto no clarinet como no sax soprano e a destacar a presença do grande guitarrista, Buck Pizzarelli, pai do John.

Love O'l Wild Bill. Check out his version of "Blue and broken hearted". The man could blow that horn. He never brought anything home with him it was all left on stage. Benny Goodman's version of this number isn't too shabby either.

Certainly here (I thought always) Wild Bill played cornet (not trumpet). Anyway, nobody could make his "dirty" sound on a trumpet.
