This video contains footage from two big dayhikes I went on a week apart in September 2017. Both hikes involved climbing a couple of the 11,000-foot peaks in northern Utah's Wasatch Mountains. These were very long days in some of the most beautiful mountains in Utah. The scenery is incredible. Enjoy! (And sorry for the wind noise.)
GPS COORDINATES (FIRST HIKE)
Stats: ~11.8 miles round trip with 5,000 feet of elevation gain
* White Pine Trailhead (trailhead for the Red Baldy/White Baldy hike): 40.575383, -111.681242
* White Pine Lake: 40.5400, -111.6792
* Red Baldy (11,171 ft/3405 m): 40.5402, -111.6671
* White Baldy (11,321 ft/3451 m): 40.5329, -111.6812
GPS COORDINATES (SECOND HIKE)
Stats: ~13 miles round trip with 7,600 feet of elevation gain
* Lone Peak Trailhead: 40.4828, -111.7598
* First Hamongog: 40.4970, -111.7522
* Second Hamongog: 40.5062, -111.7534

I will tell you that there were 2 spots in this vid where my stomach really tightened. That spire you sat on and swung your legs over and the second peak. Geez! I couldn't believe all the diverse views on the first hike. I know that making these vids is very hard work. Thanks for allowing us to tag along virtually to places I'll likely never see in person.

I used to do a lot of mountain climbing and camping, but now I am 75 years old and have to tone it down a bit, thank you for taking me along on your hike, almost as good as being there. When you showed the camera down over the edge I got a rush of that vertigo feeling you get when you are actually there. Great footage!

One of the hardest things about peak bagging is knowing when to call it. I remember trying a winter travers of Presidential’s in NH. Bagged Washington and Jefferson but tapped out before the third. Best decision I ever made. I don’t think I had it in me to see it through. Those little choices can turn a good, tiring day into too much of a good thing. Really enjoyed this video man. Thank you.

I lived there growing up. Been up Timp 20 times helped my cousin get his masters thesis collecting plants on that mountain. In my 20s had no car, borrowed a bicycle cycled from central Provo 4400 elev, up Am Fork canyon to Tibble Fork Res. 6300 elev. Hiked to top of Twin Peaks 11,491 looking down on Snowbird and returned. Some years before that my friend just out of bootcamp and I walked to Y mountain mile and a half up to pass 8,700 elev. behind Y mtn. down 300 feet then to top of Provo Peak 11,061 elev and back out Rock Canyon and home. Once, went up Bell's Canyon to hanging valley by Lone Peak 9,500 elev. Lone Peak was 1700 above, loved it. Other time went up little cottonwood canyon to little pond north side of Pfifferhorn, has little rock island with one pine tree. Rocks were so new looking, could've just happened. Thank you it was neat reliving while you photoed.

Hey somebody's been holding out on me. It was like waking up on Christmas morning and realizing that you just got the present you always wanted. I live in the bay area. I really enjoy your videos and often relate the events in the videos to my own life. They make for great cabin fever entertainment. Your water treatment drops remind me of a story... I always drink right from the spring or stream and have never treated my water, nor have I ever became sick because of the water. I grew up in the mountains of Idaho and maybe I have a natural immunity to it, but I always lived/worked in the backcountry and have never lived in a city or had chemically treated city water except at a restaurant. On one occasion I had to horse pack some university fish biology students thirty miles into the mountains so they could perform a bull trout study. I drank right out of the streams and so the greenhorns thought they could to. Anyway, they became sick as hell and our little trip turned into a giardia diarrhea extravaganza. One of the boys even lost 30 lbs of weight as a result. Giardia causes extreme bloating and flatulence and our camp sounded like "Blazing Saddles" LOL. They were so sick I had to take care of them and even wash their clothes and damned dirty undies LOL. Finally, they weren't getting better and had become so dehydrated it scared me. I ended up flying them out in a helicopter to the nearest hospital because I was afraid it would take too long to pack them out on horseback... ;-)

The hiking is much easier using hiking poles if your pack is somewhat heavy. They just help to balance the weight.

I can't imagine how you can do that all alone. It seems lonely. Be safe.

Thanks SO MUCH for showing me the beauty of the mountainside.....I felt for you everytime you left your camera and walked ahead....I know you had to go back and get it! Thank you for all your efforts in creating this video!!!! I have a question, why are the rocks so scattered like they were? I never knew that - I thought it was solid. Question 2 - are you going to video your wedding and share that as well?
@SUVRVing
@SUVRVing 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know exactly why the rocks are scattered like that. I think it's just how they weather over time. They get broken down into smaller and smaller pieces. I may share some parts of my wedding, but I don't think I'll be sharing much. I'd prefer to just focus on the day and enjoy it. Thanks Sheila!

Thank you so much for all of the beautiful videos you create. I appreciate each and every one of them. I also appreciate all the GPS coordinates you provide. I sleep in my honda pilot off road and I prefer to hike alone as well. I mainly stick to trails but I have started to wander a bit and climb things when i think they are possible for me to do. I wanted to ask you if you would consider making a video about how you use and what you use for maps, and gps guidance. I have a garmin in reach that i don't know how to use the map function very well yet, and I am trying to figure out what App would be best for when i have no cell service.(which is most of the time, when hiking). You are excellent at sharing detailed information so I thought it might be nice to learn this info from you.

Yes, I'll definitely be making a video in the future about guidance, GPS, compasses, maps, etc. But the short version is that for hikes like these, I use a great GPS and mapping app on my phone called Gaia GPS. It was $10 or $20 if I remember right, but it's way better and cheaper than a standalone GPS device. Definitely give it a try.

Lol yeah, I have a much greater appreciation for what he does now. Sometimes he walks really, reeeaalllyyy far away from the camera. So far that it must take him 20 minutes to run back for it. Crazy. Thanks Ellie.

The division between different rock types is called a “nonconformity”. And I think that peak to the east you pointed to is AF Twin Peaks.very cool trip.

My guess is the headache you mention is due to the altitude. As a pilot, we are required to be on Oxygen at 10,000'. You have been exerting yourself for some time above 10,000.

Smart move to go back down. I think you had an altitude headache. You sure put a lot of work into making your videos!

I think it was less altitude and more lack of hydration. I'm at that altitude (and higher) all the time and never have problems like that. Thanks for watching!

Nice hike! Fatigue after that sort of trek is a satisfaction I miss. Hoping health/age will let me go back out soon. Did you go close enough to the lakes to see if there are any fish? Those high altitude lakes often have no fish for various reasons.
