I usually use domes on my flash for wedding receptions but I think I'll give the bounce card method a try.

According to a video I saw yesterday at the link below, the domes would be useless outside or a place with no close walls/ceiling because it doesn't reflect but only diffuse the light all around for it to bounce back on something, so while I thought it was the same thing as a "bounce card" but better, I guess it's 2 very different things. At least a bounce card is included already for free cause some domes are ridiculously overpriced like Gary Fong that sells his rubber/plastic stuff worth 5$ at most, for half the price of your flash -_- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLNxZdR9xM3IfGQ.html

I use the Dome with the bounce card extended inside it. Perfect combination to get some ceiling bounce but a little forward push of light to fill in eye sockets etc.

While pulling out the bounce card, should I also place the little flip up diffusor plastic thing on the flash? Thank you in advance!
@rainsfordphotography41
@rainsfordphotography41 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! We do NOT usually put the flip diffusor over the flash since that is meant to diffuse (and reduce the power of) your flash, but since you're using the bounce card you're already dramatically reducing the effective flash power on your subject. So reducing the power a bit more with the plastic diffusor flap isn't necessary.

Having your flash at 45° pushes a lot of hard light forward to your subject. Once your subject can see the flash lens, hard light is coming their way. That little bounce card cannot physically produce soft light since it's actually smaller than the flash lens itself, which is already pretty small. That bounce card is only meant to give some semblance of a catchlight in your subject's eyes, not give even remotely soft light. The only time it seems to produce flattering light is when your flash is bouncing off white/neutral walls and ceilings creating a wash of soft light and the card bounces a tiny bit of hard light forward mixing in with that soft light. On its own the card isn't great. I use bigger bounce cards that are pretty easy to attach to the speedlight. The built-in bounce card is trash for the most part.

I agree with you Jason. Using a bigger bounce card sounds a better idea than using the smaller built-in bounce card. I use a bigger bounce card. However I would like to try both back to back & understand the difference. I have hardly ever used the smaller built-in bounce card so far.

I was wondering the same thing. Considering the size is the same as the flash light itself or even smaller, how can this card get you any diffused light? I think it can be used as a catch light or as the guy was using it, but the effect won't be exactly what he said it will be.

Appreciate this video. Flash is barely spoken about in a lot of photography channels, and its the most intimidating to start with aswell. I assume you also have your flash set to ttl?

Hi Brother, very useful information thanks for this. I have a doubt at 2.27 where the picture is dark at the bottom portion (stomach area compare to face area), how to overcome this darkness using bounce card at 45 degree. Asking this question as one of my picture has the same output.
@rylandrainsford1693
@rylandrainsford1693 Жыл бұрын
Hey great question! Sometimes we move the bounce card to 60 degrees to keep this from happening. Other times, we take a minute in post process to lighten that bottom area just a bit to make the picture a bit more even in light. Either way, we feel like this is the most consistent way to take photos at a reception where everyone has great color & light on their faces. Does this help?

Hi, Jose! Great question - no. We always shoot manual flash settings. We find 1/32 flash power to be a good starting point for most situations!

Ah sorry, that's not a bounce card my friend. That's a catchlight card which is designed to put a catch light in people's eyes when the flash is pointed at the ceiling or bouncing of a wall, etc. An actual bounce card is much larger.
