I'm just not a fan of OLEDs for PC monitors... I like my machines to last more than 1-2 years, and an OLED panel displaying static images on bright settings is going to burn in super fast. Linus did a video on this too... it's a shame they can't figure out a way to improve that.

I feel like Asus is producing quite a lot of innovative laptops in recent years. Some examples: - ZenBook duo with two screens - rog flow x13 as the second 13" 2 in 1 with dedicated GPU after the surface book, but with a much better CPU - rog flow Z13 a 13" tablet with dedicated GPU and powerful CPU - a much better eGPU for their flow devices to address the typical bottlenecks of eGPUs ...and there are a few more things I could mention. I really like this report. I’ve been looking to get a folding device. I did wonder how long apple or samsung was going to take to get it happening. Apple offring a 20” is a bit much, i’d prefer 15” that folds down to fit a small carry bag just for portability. Unfolding into a 20” screen is not meant for handheld outdoor usage, it requires a table, it requires a full backpack or briefcase. 15” is large enough to be handheld, small enough to fit folded in a neat little notebook sleeve or handbag. So perhaps apple will offer a somewhat smaller device along with the 20”, a mini which would be perfect for me. I really don’t want a wrist breaking keyboard with flat chiclet keys, as none are ergonomic unless it is angled to ease wrist twisting and concave keys for good finger placement. If it’s not done right, i’d rather buy a folding bluetooth keyboard that fits my ergonomic needs.

This reminds me of Microsoft's Neo project that never saw the light of day. I love the idea of the neo, pull the keyboard off and now you have 2 displays. I think this is cool too, but one large display is not quite as useful as two distinct displays IMO. With two distinct you can still have glass screens, for way more durability, easier management of separate applications, etc. My #1 use case would be one display for applications (the top display), and the bottom display to take notes. But there's plenty of other stuff that works great for dual screens, especially for programming. Dual displays > folding displays IMO.

Yep, I still prefer dual screen than folding screen. Currently use zenbook duo & my use case is autocad at top & folder/reference at bottom. But the half bottom screen is not enough, feels cramp. Would be lovely if samsung also start doing dual screen laptop and pairs together with tab s8 ultra.

Ideally I want the monitor to be a peripheral. For my CAD work flow 2 matched displays that are reasonably large are ideal. So 2 displays that are thin clients wireless or wired to a compute element that is seperable like the keyboard would be an ideal portable work station. An EGPU would also be a nice element. A modular upgrade and reuse path for each element. Folding to a half screen for on a plane or at a meeting table seem ideal.

They can make bezels so thin these days personally I’d rather have bezels in the middle than a crease that eventually fails
@SeanClarke

They could make a folding dual screen device with practically zero bezels along the joining edge. That would be better than a single folding screen. They could even be independently powered to save battery.

I'll be honest and say I have a cynical side to my brain that's being unnecesarily judgy of this. It looks like a great idea, and I love seeing companies doing different things with every-day tech. If we never did that, we wouldn't have had so many of the things we have now, and how many of those things had an initial reaction of "You want to put WHAT on the phone?". I will say- it's obviously not going to be the best product, straight away. I think things like this require that initial jump so they know what to work on in the future, the same as they did with 3-in-1 laptops, or things of that nature, tech that didn't do exactly as the rest of its kind did, so while I'm (I'd say, understandably) a little cynical of this exact model, I'd love to see what future this line is going to have.

Basically a giant portable monitor that can be folded in half to become a lap top. Now they just need to focus on driving down the costs, removing the crease and create matte displays. I believe LG, Samsung and other Chinese company had prototype displays recently that were creaseless. Exciting times ahead.

@@UntrainableWizard Yea it's not a great look, and your concern is justified. I personally own a Galaxy Flip, and while many users say the crease is negligible after a while, but I personally tend to disagree. Yes it's true you can tolerate it, but the main problem is after a while it just looks very dated, as you would put it: worn and crumbled as an old books spine.

The thunderbolt 4 in the laptop is a bonus, you can run docks off the laptop with all the extra devices like external hard drives, LAN networks and extra monitors. One wonders with sitting the keyboard in the laptop position and changing it on a daily basis, would it end up scratching the unused screen surface? Or is there a big enough space between the screen and the bottom of the keyboard, would it warrant a sleeve over the unused half of the screen. These type of screen set up with touch control in mind tend to get very dirty quick. More ram and a i9 cpu and you could use it as a gaming laptop depending on the gpu.

Well, Yes, it is cool, but it's the same concept as the X1 Fold from Lenovo, that came out in 2020, yet it was only 13" (10" in "Laptop"-Mode). I would like to see more Companies do a thing like this
@daveweinstein5044

Here's the math for a 22" folding laptop screen that folds up to be the size of a 15.6" laptop. √((9×2)^2+12.8^2) 12.8" x 9" is the size of a screen with a 15.6" diagonal. The aspect ration when it's unfolded is a bit off, but close enough. There's also the potential of stretching things a bit to get to a 24" screen without making it too much bigger than this. Personally, I'd love a device like this. the keyboard that they slid into the middle of the fold (which was a great idea that Lenovo came up with) seems like the best way to store a companion keyboard, and a mouse (like the Microsoft Arc mouse) that could fold flat and clip onto the power brick for storage and charging would round out the package for a "larger" size folding mobile workstation. Larger size would leave more room for bigger battery (although I'd guess most folks would just want to plug it in), but more importantly, larger size would make it easier to fit a higher power processor and graphics in with the kind of cooling they would need. Asus seems like the company with the courage to build something like this. Let hope that they can improve the folding tech (i.e. the screen crease) as they bring out future models of this sort of laptop with bigger screens and more power.
