Happy Monday all! Today I tried out a new way (to me at least) to use die cuts with watercoloring. I used contact paper! This is such a fun way to use dies! I've always wanted to use diecuts as masks while watercoloring, but haven't found a way to do it that was convenient. Until now! I came across some watercolor artists using contact paper and I was intrigued.

I remember doing this in High School back in 73, it was really fun. We had to draw our "Design" on paper as a rift wrath draft lol as he called it! So our Art Teacher could look at it.! to see if it past the building code. Than we drew our plans (Blue Prints) on the contact paper, we handed in our papers again for the second day, So he graded us again! Than the next day, who ever past he called out our names and we went up to the front of the class room and he handed us a toy hammer and a little hard hat and than we built our design. I told him he did that all wrong, but I forgave him lol cuz he was only a Art Teacher. I drew a Peace Sign and painted it with Water colors, I kinda threw my water color paints at it to make it looked like tie-dyed! So, I know what you mean about it felt like it took you for ever because the next day at school we walked in class and he hung our paintings up and I got a A+ Purple Ribbon! YAY! It was a lot of fun! I had forgot all about that until watching your tutorial : ) Thanks for sharing that and bring back a good memory that I had forgotten ; )

WHAT A COOL TECHNIQUE, Kristina! Just different n’ fun way to do watercoloring n’ create some really COOL cards! Your tips to get better results from YOUR TRIAL n’ ERROR are so helpful~~i.e. pressing contact paper down around edges n’ over whole die piece, taping pieces to a board, etc. so thank you for those! I LOVE ALL OF THE CARDS and think the Diamond background/HELLO card is really neat! Definitely think the stacked layers of the sentiments are a must, even tho’ more time consuming! :-)). Thinking perhaps that using a co-ordinating color cardstock for sentiments might add a “pop”, too! You’ve inspired me to ‘PLAY” with this technique, too, so thank you for that! :-)). ALWAYS enjoy your videos! HAPPY STAMPIN’ n’ CREATIN’! Have a lovely day! :-)

Kristina, You could get a similar effect by cutting out the die cut in white paper and adhering it over a watercolor background. Not quite as intricate looking, but still cool. Especially for the larger die cuts. Love your videos! 💕 Thank you! Susan K

Hi Kristina, as a watercolor artist I have used this technique before but if you want a really crisp edge you can run liquid frisket along the edges of the contact paper to seal out the watercolor. You CAN’T use a heat tool on the liquid frisket but I prefer a natural dry anyway. I love all your cards and have learned a lot from watching you.

To ensure that the contact paper is stuck everywhere, you could use a brayer or even the back of a large metal spoon, with a piece of thin protective paper over the card piece. Also, if a small area of the design happens to get paint seeping into where you want it to be white, just take your x-acto knife and VERY CAREFULLY (using the tip, at an angle) slowly scrape the colour from the white area. Just slowly take off a very thin layer at a time and try to feather it out towards the rest of the white area so that there is no hard edge left. I use this technique in my watercolour paintings and it works quite well. I have also used a smaller-type craft knife, using the little flat bit at the end of the blade (the pointed end of the blade). It is a couple of millimeters wide and makes a great “scraper”. Sometimes using the point of an x-acto can be too sharp and narrow. Hope that is clear enough, :). I loved your technique. Will keep it in mind when I am doing paper art. I especially liked your multi-layered calligraphy messages. What attention to detail, to be able to get them all lined up so neatly! Thank-you for sharing these tips. 👵🏻🐾💕🇨🇦 P.S. - if you correct the seepage areas by scraping, remember that if you, for some reason, go to paint over that scraped area; that the scraped area will absorb the colour of the paint a lot more than the surrounding paper. Therefore, don’t do the scraping until everything else is done, :).

@rebeccaknudsen6190
@rebeccaknudsen6190 5 жыл бұрын
@@cathymorris8072if you look in KZfaq there are tutorials that show the process. Paper doesn't get stuck in die because there are holes to break the pressure or you can poke them out with a tool.
@kensorensen5321
@kensorensen5321 5 жыл бұрын
The die cutting machine sounds like a good idea. I also thought maybe running a teflon bone folder over the die die cut would help adhere it. I'm wondering if the water from watercoloring will help the contact paper release from the watercolor paper when you've finished the painting, maybe remove the contact paper before the watercolor dries completely. But first I think it might be a good idea to blot any pooled color from the contact paper die cut. It may not have have entirely been bleeding that spotted the floral cover die cut. It may have dripped off when the contact paper was removed.

My tabs are 10 mg but I usually try 5 mg first and if that doesn’t work then I take the other 1/2 tab for the full 10 mg. It works so good. I’ll take it and within 10 - 15 min. my hands are as calm as can be. It also works good to relax you at night before bed. It a med for high blood pressure that’s also used for shaky hands. I buy clear contact vinyl at the dollar store. I double up 2 pieces for both die cutting and for my cricut cutting. It’s still way cheaper than frisket and makes a stiffer mask that is easier to handle. After I lay the mask loosely on the paper, I place a scrap piece of pc paper on top to adhere the mask (stencil) with a bone folder. The paper insures I don’t damage the mask while smoothing it out. I usually use inks or chalks, but I love your water coloring technique and am going to give it a try!

Very pretty Kristina, Cricut make a transfer sheet, which is a low tack sheet, it might also work, and for the more intricate dies, cut out another piece of transfer, or contact paper, and place it ove the die cut transfer/contact paper and lift it off the backing paper , it will help you have a little more control placing it..rub it down and remove the top piece, should be low tack enough to separate, I hope that makes sense...

Pretty cool! I've seen Channin Pelletier use contact paper for masking with ink blending & it works really well. She has several videos on her YT channel using it.
