The shopping cart trick is a very good point actually. I fould maybe one day do an update video! In the 5 years I have been living in Germany I never actually used a shopping cart, with the tricks used in the video I never actually stopped anyone in the line. Only in Portugal, where I shop for 4 people and buy a lot of food and use my parents car.

I learned the hard way. The first time I went to Germany I was pretty taken back. The next few times I went, I was ready! Lol I did exactly that - just put it all in shopping cart, paid and then moved to the side, out of the way, and placed it all in my bags.

No packing tables in Lidl France. It's hilarious, esp. when the women do their usual female thing of having their payment card floating around in the bottom of an overfull bag instead of being organised and having the card already in hand or in an easily accessible outer pocket. And then there's the ones who pay by cheque 😤 I've never, in my 20 years living in France, seen a man pay by cheque.

Not every store has the packing tables, they're mostly a feature of Aldi and Lidl stores. Rewe and Penny don't really have them for example

I remember with introducing the scanners the process was actually slower because the early scanners were just bad (low scanning speed, lots of scanning errors, etc).

Actually they didn't memorize the prices, but a unique three digit number for any product. More efficent when prices change and faster to type.

Only with newbie cashiers though, those that have been working for some time know the codes of the bakery items by heart and manage to see what's in the bag with just a glance. Never ever have I encountered a cashier that took a minute to ring up those items, even the newbies took less time lol

Also vegetables or fruit which will be weighed at the cashier can be placed at the end or mixed in between to slow the cashier down and have time to pack.

Well, you have to analyse the time spend on getting a shopping cart, emptying it and bringing it back compared to without it to actually have a legit comparison of a speedrun strategy. Actually the "Shopping cart" strategy depends on several factors such as map, map size, amount of NPCs who are allowed to use the register, amount of players on the map, amount of players on the map which uses the shopping cart and etc.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who does this. I shop a certain way and organize my basket a cer6ain way so heavier stuff doesn't crush more fragile stuff and like items are together. I was a cashier and hated when people just threw their stuff up all willy nilly. I then not only had to ring up their stuff and bag it but organize it as well.

The Secret is, they are Always understaffed even in Germany, thats how the company saves money

As a Romanian, this is a breath of fresh air compared to the time-wasting customers that you normally see in my country. The cashier has a long line to service, people have stuff to do, nobody is supposed to wait for your slow ass! 😄

Just chuck your stuff back into the shopping cart without thinking too much and then pack as leisurely as you want at the packing table after the cashing area like the system is intended to. That way, it's fast (because nobody holds up the line trying to bag at the cashier's) AND not stressful. And even though you have to touch your items twice, it's still more efficient time-wise because you wait less time in line.

Here in Germany, they were way more prevalent a few years back. I guess it lowers efficiency or something so most shops don't have them anymore

At least the belt splitters were also common here until a few years ago. I don't know exactly why they were abolished - probably because customers without time pressure were still too slow and then sometimes even checked the bill and/or even the change. Customers complaining about an incorrect bill, or because the change was not correct ... well that´s a big nogo (for the companies).

@@fipsvonfipsenstein6704 they have these new ones here that have a plastic wall you slide into a slot, then the person behind you has their stuff pile up against the wall, then when you are done packing you lift the wall, and all the next persons stuff slides down to the end, they can put the wall up after their last item is scanned so the next persons stuff doesn't mix in with their own. It's hilarious because no one notices the wall divider and start panicking and packing super-fast when the next persons stuff starts coming down the chute. They are bewildered when they see me packing nice and leisurely while the next persons stuff stays separated from mine. I have to show them how the divider works then it clicks.

Most supermarkets let you weigh your groceries yourself in the grocery isle, so the cashier just has to scan the barcode that you printed.

ALDI sells mostly pre-weighed items.

I guess it depends on how far away from the store you live. We have stores for each block. So I go shopping by foot. That means I don't carry 5kg rice with me, but mostly go to the supermarket every other day.

@@ismirdochegal4804 People work till very late to be able to shop everyday at supermarkets, and wholesale/warehouse are very popular, you can save money buying big volume - useful, since single households are rare here. If you don't own a car, you get "frete" (men at the door with vehicles that drive you home for a fee). There are also cars/vans driving around our neighborhoods selling eggs, fish, vegetables+fruits and delicacies. Veggie stands on busy streets everyday and farmers' markets happen on the streets (or from a big bus) once a week. Stores as well: bakery, butcher, greengrocer. I live in a big city. Brazil is a mixture of it all, it's a crazy place; hard to explain.

Same with the philippines, in a lot of groceries their would be people who has 1 or 2 carts full of groceries full to the top.

Nobody in Europe has kitchens that are big enough to store several 5kg bags of rice and grains and flour and whatnot. At least not if you live in the city like the majority of the population. We buy more often and smaller quantities. Packages are typically 500grams or 1kg. But an end of the week grocery run would give you a full big shopping cart as well. Most people here do one big run every weekend and pick up some more fresh stuff, like baked goods or veggies, a couple of times a week.

Outside the USA no-one bags the groceries for you.

if you use a cart like others refered its less stressful, but in general compared to other countries i shopped, yes its stressful. You get used to it

Totally different perspective! This summer I had the amazing oportunity to visit New Jersey and all I could say is that people in the US were just so nice?? Yes, random people making small talk, maybe I just got lucky to have cool cashiers? At emptier stores I had full conversations! (something that doesn't really happen here) However, at target once (I actually made a video about it) it was just horribly slow, but that's because I could only pay with cash and couldn't go to the self checkout (with card) Anyways, cool to hear from your side :)

Dividers at the end would definitely make things easier! hahah There is always space problems there so the cashier has to organize sometimes some items as seen in the video. I really can't tell you why this specific Aldi doesn't have them while other stores DO have them hahah

A "discount store" e.g. Lidl or Aldi is pure science! From book lengths formulas, to every psychologic trick you can imagine. You enter the store you start the game. Aldi want you out of the store as fast as possible. No music, not only to save money, also to get you out as fast as possible, no music = no one listen. Why do you think is the end of the checkout is so small and the start so long? Aldi want you to pack your stuff as fast as possible, to increase your packing speed, the stress is wanted. Long Line behind you and other customers items are coming. "Why not have a conveyorbelt with dividers at the end, so you can check items for next client before the first havn’t packed yet?" Because, that would you slowed down.

@@DrachenKaiser hm okej, that makes some sense I suppose. Not sure I'd agree on it beeing better for the store or the customers really, but I understand the logic behind it better I suppose. But I wouldnt call it more efficient! because it's not, but it puts a social pressure on the customers to be efficient, so that in turn can lead to it beeing rather fast. I don't think people would do it quicker if it was established where I live, people would just take the same time they do and tell the cashier to slow down! So not sure their model would work here in sweden, people feel they have the right on their side to take their time, so no social pressure on them, the pressure would be on the cashier to open another cash register rather or they would just stop shopping there. I wouldn't feel any pressure having to pack faster because of this method at all, difference of culture I guess. Cashiers often move between registers here, if people pack slowly since they can't really hurry them up, and the social pressure is on the cashier not the customer packing.

at both of the aldis i work at we recommend getting a cart so that cashiers can quickly put all of your items in the cart and then you can take it to the bagging area and pack at whatever speed you like. it keeps the lines down and keeps product prices cheap because aldi doesn't need to hire as many employees since they're so efficient

@@DrachenKaiser Question: Is it ever super crowded? Coz from the video, there is no crowd at all, which begs the question, why the rush? And by the looks of it, they seem to be working toward getting rid of even the cashiers. Is that a good thing?

i agree with you! It just depends on the situation, time losses and also how many items you have :)

It also depends on the other customers. My experience is, that the cashier is very friendly and patient, while the customer behind the slower person is being rude, or impatient. I personally usually just patiently wait, while giving some space. Those 10 to 15 extra seconds are just not worth fussing about.

Ich war selbst schon Kassierer. Was die wenigsten wissen werden: es gibt eine SCANRATE die du zu erfüllen hast. Diese steht jeden Tag auf deinem Kassenprotokoll. Waren immer so 100 Artikel pro Minute. Und wenn du darunter bleibst, wirst du vom Chef angekackt! Egal, wie sich die Kunden damit fühlen. Du musst so schnell sein. Dabei kommen die meisten mit einräumen gar nicht so schnell hinterher. Besonders seitdem es hinter der Kasse keine Bänder mehr gibt... Völlig bescheuert. Einkaufen in deutschen Supermärkten ist der pure Stress!
