It's the 1st July, and we're still in Wales ... ! And our day starts with a trip on the brilliant Ffestiniog Railway, and it links us between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog before carrying to Holyhead, oh and some place too called St Mary's Church in the Hollow of the White Hazel Near to the Rapid Whirlpool of Llantysilio of the Red Cave ...
With huge thanks to the Ffestiniog railway: www.festrail.co.uk/
Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: itunes.apple.com/gb/album/all... (other stores are available....)
Geoff and Vicki are visiting ALL 2,563 national railway stations in Britain - view the progress map and loads more information about the project on the website at: allthestations.co.uk/
ROUTE: Porthmadog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Llandudno Junction, Llandudno, Llanfairpwll, Holyhead, Conwy, Chester

Another lovely film. Watching this, I was thinking how much scope there would be for making a feature film with the theme of All The Stations: the intrepid joint protagonists, their interplay, the wonderful photography, the great theme music, all the places visited and all the interesting people encountered. Yet the trickiest bit would be to capture the enthusiasm, freshness and fun feeling of all the episodes. I would say that the whole series is simply great as it is.

In the winter the Ffestiniog railway closes and undergoes maintenance by volunteers. Holyhead was an important station in the steam era, as there were frequent Euston - Holyhead boat trains which had a fairly high status on the LMS and were lengthy, hence the overall canopy and platform length.

Holyhead station has only three platforms, but is spread out over a very large area. Only Platform 2 is in the impressive train shed. Platform 3 lies just outside it, and Platform 1 (used by the direct trains to London Euston) is in a different area altogether. The signs from Platform 1 to the ferry bring you up the platform, through a large empty concourse, and back down Platform 2. You're much better off going down Platform 1 to the bridge, which brings you over water to the ferryport. The signs predate the bridge.

Conwy is a lovely place (with a great beach if the weather is hot - I went in 2003 during the heatwave). Some of the walk around the walls is not good if you don't like heights as there's sometimes no barrier and its a sheer drop into someone's back garden:)

Great video and the Ffestiniog Railway looks amazing. A few years ago my birthday treat was a Statesman Rail day return trip from Hull to Blaenau which should have included a short journey on the Ffestiniog. Problems with Selby swing bridge caused us to get diverted, and the delay meant that we missed our slot on the single track from Llandudno Junction and so couldn't do the Ffestiniog. A few hours at Betws-y-Coed was the only consolation.

At first glance it looks like it has 58 letters, but technically it's less than that because certain pairs of letters such as LL count as single letters in Welsh. It's shown in timetables as simply 'Llanfairpwll', so the longest station name in the country that's in official use is Rhoose Cardiff International Airport
