Would this play a big role here? Of course I know gliders, the global hawk and the U-2. They have skinny but long wings, however they fly in a much higher speed range (especially the U-2). I assume such a long, skinny wing has less drag than a wing with a lot of depth which is crucial at high speed. However in WW2 when planes were slower they had a wing called Davis wing (B-24), which had a lot of thickness. In its speed range this wing gave the B-24 additional range compared to a standard wing used before on the B-17. Most wings in this video were simply too small or structurally not good enough

You wouldn't necessarily need to be an engineer to get such a thing decently flying. What you need is a big wing for a low enough wing loading (since your speed is low the wing must be bigger) and to set the center of gravity on the right place. Most in the video had wings way too small or they did not have proper control surfaces

It was called the redbull flugtag, started back in 1992 in Austria. They held it in London once, don't remember anyone ever flying. They used to do a motorbike hill climb in Austria called the rachau hill climb, it was almost impossible to reach the summit because it was about 1000meters at 85°. The stupider the attempt, the more prizes they got.

Seriously. It seems like they did so much work to build something that instantly crashes and is destroyed . They should at least try to make something that flies
